@Historymajorr

UCB: You probably don’t want to hear this, but the truth is probably better to hear than some lie telling you you have a good shot to make you feel better for a short while. 3.75-4.00 was the 25th to 75th percentile for the past few years of history majors being admitted to UCB. If your GPA is a 3.69 after this semester, you are below the 25th percentile for the average students that gets in, leaving you at a strong disadvantage GPA-wise. However, your EC’s, work, awards, and background look better than most applicants so they will probably leverage you to (my estimate) around the 40th percentile overall (this number is to give you my own evaluation, which is probably way off of the real thing. But if it makes you feel less anxious, then so be it). Your chances are alright—not the best, but not the worst.

UCLA: The average GPA range of admitted students was 3.53-3.87. Your GPA would fit almost at the 50th percentile GPA wise which puts you at a decent spot. What puts you above most other applicants are the extra stuff you’ve included in your application which would move you to the 60th percentile overall.

UCSB: You tagged to UCSB so you’re 100% guaranteed in unless you drop a major class (or a GE class that UCSB is picky about)

UCSC: You’ll get in.

CCC Student

I just applied to Berkeley and Santa Barbara. I did TAG for UCSB, so I’m not worried, despite only applying to two campuses. I’m applying as a Film Major, but I made it clear in my PIQ’s that I’m interested in designing costumes for film.

Major: Film Studies
GPA: 4.0
Major Prep: Done
IGETC: Done

I’ll be finished with all requirements by the end of the Fall 2017 semester, so I’m taking a semester off. I wrote in the application that I’ll be using that time to work and save money.

EC’s:
-Costume Design Assistant for college’s theater production (2 productions)
-Student Costume Designer (1 production, was the first student to design their own show)
-Work Part-Time
-Art Club Officer
-Note Provider

PIQ’s: I wrote about my love for sewing and collecting vintage, my struggles with health, and my experience as a student costume designer. I feel pretty good about my responses, but I’m still a little nervous.

I feel like my EC’s could have been a bit better, but every semester I was taking well above the “full-time” number of units. I took 18 my first semester, 16 my second, then 2 over the summer, and 14 this semester. Also, the extracurriculars I mentioned took up a lot of my time; With work, theater productions, and class, I was completely booked.

The counselors I’ve talked to seem to think I’ll get into Berkeley, but I’m not going to get my hopes up. Good luck everybody!

CCC Student

I just applied to Berkeley , LA, Irvine, and San diego

I believe I have a solid GPA, but the only problem is that In my previous private college I had about 7 W’s along with 3 F’s that are non -UC transferable course. When I first came to community college I had 2 w’s and 1 F’s but retook all the class and got an A. The only course that has been known to be UC transferable from my previous private college is English 101 which I have got C+ on it.

Major : Anthropology
GPA. 3.92 (have 60 units of transferable course done by 2017 Fall)
Major Prep : Done
IGETC: only the math section is missing will be done by 2018 winter.

EC’s I would say its above average since I have done lots of things and involved in clubs for a decent time.

Personal statement: Revised it thousand times, I would say it’s pretty decent.

Do I have a good chance for every school listed above?

Thank you

I’ve applied to UCD (tag approved), UCB, and UCLA for fall 18’.

Major: Cognitive Science
GPA (3.94 with 69 units completed so far)
Major Prep: Done
IGETC: done by spring
ECs: Sort of weak, mostly academic stuff
Personal statement: strong, based on personal experiences

Good luck all!

@irisstar
Your status looks great!! However, your ECs tends to be focused on costume design but not film related :confused: I am not sure whether that would affect your competitiveness or not (or maybe costume design is related to film study? Sorry I’m not familiar with art related major lol). Anyway, everything else looks great and hope you could get in :slight_smile:

@GRstudent94
Did you count that C+ into your 3.92 gpa? If you did, then you should be safe with SD and Irvine, and if you have reasonable explanations then your Ws and Fs should be fine. Berkeley always examines the transcripts from different institutions separately and put all the circumstances into consideration. Not sure about UCLA since they are more heavily focused on your gpa, but they should have similar policies regarding to the application.

@smsk
I think you are safe to UCLA with your GPA and their high admit rate for pre-cognitive science major (3.50-3.82, 29%).
According to the stats of Berkeley (3.58-3.91, 12%), your GPA looks good enough. However, due to your weak ECs, I can’t be sure about Berkeley since they reject tons of 4.0 people every year. But still, if you do have a strong and persuasive personal statement, you still got a chance :slight_smile: good luck

@andlecic Yes I have counted the C+ into my 3.92 GPA! I explained what happened during those times, the only thing I’m aware of is the W’s and F’s that are non transferable and the fact that I did not complete the math section by 2017 Fall. I should have chance Berkeley and UCLA right? :frowning:

@andlecic thanks for your reply. I do have a reason for my weak ECs though, since I’m a full-time mother to a disabled child. And the motivation behind pursuing a degree in Cognitive Science is because I want to help advance science for people with severe developmental disorders like my son. I’m not sure how non-traditional students are evaluated at Berkeley or UCLA, but I’m definitely not in the same boat as most of the typical applicants. My dream job would be working for the Mind Institute, so if I get accepted for Davis, I’ll be more than happy.

CCC

Major: Computer Science (not EECS)
GPA: 3.92 with 60+ units
Major Prep: Will be done in the Spring (only missing linear and differential)
IGETC: Done this semester
EC’s: Weak. Coder. CS Club. Staff of a tutoring/mentoring program on campus for math students. Deans list.
Personal Statement: Tried my best? haha

Hey guys, I just noticed that today I’ve got mail from UCB with the info to access the application portal.
