**uc davis class of 2025 discussion**

Were you accepted as a psych major at UCI as well? Check to see how easy or difficult it will be to get your pre-med courses at UCI. At UCD, there are very few classes that are restricted to those in a particular major. Even the few upper div classes that are restricted at UCD are only restricted for Pass 1 registration. They open to any major in Pass 2. UCI works differently so confirm before committing.

Also in state and accepted for animal science! Iā€™m currently trying to decide between Cal Poly Pomona (where Iā€™d be animal science with pre-vet emphasis) and UC Davis but I canā€™t seem to figure out how big the animal science class sizes are at Davis or how hands on they are (since small class sizes with hands on experience is what Pomona specializes in). Other than that I think that this is the college that I might choose. Congratulations on your admission!

Davis is consistently a top 5 animal science program so Iā€™d say youā€™d be making a fantastic choice!

@damndeedlyda: Also the highest percentage of UCD Vet school admits are from UCD. Application Statistics - Class of 2024

Yeah 50 students admitted to Davisā€™ vet school from undergrad! But how many applied from Davis is the question Iā€™m currently asking myself right now haha. Because if its 50 admitted but then 1,000 applied or sth like that it would be kinda rough compared to if 2 were admitted at Pomona but only 50 applied. This is a question Iā€™ll definitely be asking the advisors though.

True, it would be nice to know how many from each school applied but bottom line will always be GPA so select the school where you think you have the best chance for a high GPA.

Remember Davis is not the only graduate vet school in the country. Thereā€™s always Cornell for vet grad school. :grimacing:

Iā€™m disabled so there is a program that will cover my tuition for a public in state school but not any other school. UC Davis is the only public vet school in California so if I donā€™t want to be thousands of dollars in debt from postgraduate studies I kinda canā€™t go anywhere else haha

For sure! Iā€™ve taken 5 week community college classes and gotten good grades so I think I will survive the quarter system. It also might be better for me in terms of ADHD.

No question then, go to Davis.

My D didnā€™t get into Davis, but she did get into CPP and SLO for animal science/pre-vet. Had she gotten into Davis, we would have had a tough choice, but sheā€™s planning to attend SLO, which has the next highest number of admittance to the Davis vet grad school.

Although sheā€™ll apply to OOS schools, assuming she gets that far. :grinning:

Best of luck to you.

Congratulations to you!
My daughter got admitted to CalPoly Pomona as well, same major as you. Somehow her choices are CalState Long Beach marine biology major or Davis animal science. Sheā€™s waitlisted at UCSD and really hopes she gets off the waitlist.
As a parent I would really love her to choose Davis, but itā€™s her decision.
Any thoughts?

Nice! SLO denied me haha, but I was planning on attending CPP regardless (nothing wrong with the school just a preference). Best of luck to her! The Cal Poly schools are really good for animal science so she shouldnā€™t be disappointed. Especially because class sizes are smaller in the CSU system and easier to get letter of recommendations from. Their motto isnā€™t ā€œlearn by doingā€ for nothing. Sheā€™ll do great!

UC Davis or UW Seattle for Poli Sci major? Iā€™m aware Davis ranks higher but Iā€™ve heard the US News rankings are just based off prestige. I think both locations would be beneficial for my major as Davis is close to Sac (govt internships and jobs prob) and Seattle is in the city. What else should I take into consideration??

^ also I am planning to visit both college locations. thinking about visiting Seattle for 3 days as it has plenty to do. but unsure about Davis and the surrounding locations? I would have to probably stay at a hotel for at least one night as itā€™s a multiple hour drive away. would 1 day and 1 night be enough?

Are the costs the same for UW and UCD? Locations and weather very different. Definitely a visit is warranted.

From the way you phrased your question am I correct in assuming you are a California resident? If so, does tuition matter? More than most other careers with the exception being business and law, politics is reliant on connections. Seattle, while a major city, is more tech focused than politically focused. Also, as a native Seattleite, I must advise you the weather is as bad as people say. However, if you do decide to set your heart on UW-Seattle, the campus is gorgeous and located in a fantastic city with all the foods you can dream of eating. Do you have any post grad plans for a masters or a JD? Those are factors to consider as well for selection of an undergrad program

My parents also would really love me to choose Davis. I will say that CSUs are more career based whereas UCs are great if you want to do research. Iā€™m not planning on being a marine biologist, as I want to work to protect endangered species and their habitats, which would be either wildlife or zoo vet. Although something universal across fields is that ultimately she should go wherever she feels sheā€™ll get the most in terms of college experience, diversity (if you are a minority of any kind), education, teacher/student interactions (varies based on class sizing), student/student interactions (are they cut throat or do they help each other out, etc.), major related clubs and programs, networking and internship opportunities, and student resources. UC Davis is good for people who like the college town atmosphere and donā€™t mind how big the campus is or that you will have to take a bus (which is free for students) to go anywhere substantial. Itā€™s also especially good for people who are interested in environmental science since they plan going carbon neutral by 2025. However, Davis is about two hours away from the nearest beach (Iā€™m not a big fan of beaches so I am okay with this), which might not be good if she really likes beaches or needs to be close to the beach for her career related interests. But I think there might be internships for marine biology that Davis offers so thatā€™s worth checking out. UC Davis also has a ton of student resources such as student health insurance, great mental health services, and much more. It is also good to look into how each school is handling COVID. UC Davis has really low COVID rates, and this is reflected in the town as well. Students are also very respectful of the COVID guidelines from what Iā€™ve seen. Lastly, I recommend looking at the curriculum sheet for each college to see what kind of classes she would have to take for each major/program she got into. Best of luck to her with her decision! I know this was a lot of reading haha

UC Davis maintains a research lab at Bodega Bay and something for her to consider: Bodega Marine Laboratory

I live in SoCal and visited this weekend. I drove 8 hours on Friday and stayed overnight at the hotel, and then explored the campus for a few hours on Saturday and left around 3 or 4 pm. Personally, I donā€™t think that 1 day and 1 night was enough time but I start work next weekend so this is the only time I could have gone before May 1st and I had to be back by Sunday. There is a nice hotel on campus (Hyatt) and I recommend renting a bike at the Bike Barn since a lot of the areas on campus are closed off to cars and walking takes quite a long time. But I was able to see enough to get a feel of the campus/town and it was very nice! Best of luck with your travels and decisions.

financial aid and merit scholarships would put both schools at around the same price so yes, I think the only big difference will be location/weather/atmosphere. thank you!!
