tuition does not matter as they are roughly the same for me. but yes! I really love the campus being so close to a city, it definitely has more to do and more mobility than davis but I’m just not sure if the location would be worth giving up a possibly better undergrad program. I do want to go to a law school and pursue a JD after undergrad though. I’ve tried to look up how many undergrad students from both UW and Davis get admitted into law schools but I can only find stats of their law schools. thank you!
ahh thank you!! I’m glad you were able to go even if it was for a little while. I’ll definitely take the hotel and bike situation into consideration and perhaps I’ll extend my Davis trip to 2 days and a night then. thank you again, super helpful!! wishing you the best for your decisions as well
Seattle is an excellent city to live in with gorgeous cobalt blue skies in the summer but have you thought about Seattle’s winter weather? Some people report feeling less motivated during the cooler seasons as a result of seasonal depression. Davis is also not horribly far from Sac which can be accessed by either driving, or the bus. I believe freshmen living on campus are not allowed parking spots. After that, older students usually have cars I believe. I’m not sure what the parking situation is like for freshmen living off campus so I’ll defer to someone else
yes, I have thought about the weather. I’m pretty good with the cold and the temperatures year round don’t seem too bad. I also don’t suffer from seasonal depression so I think it’s unlikely. I think the biggest issue would be the rain though. I’m used to the cold but rain is a different story. I’ll have to see when I visit! and yeah the Davis parking spot situation isn’t a problem as I don’t have my own car. and thank you! your input is actually super helpful as I would be living on campus :~)
@chaiheart It depends on the vibe you like. UCDavis is its own college town but not tons to do there unless you take a train into SF or drive to Tahoe for skiing (2-2.5 hours to both). I live near Davis now. UW can be it’s own little town because of the student population. But you have access to so much more of the city by taking the bus or light rail. The UPass is one of the best deals to this day for public transportation. I thrive better in big cities and surrounded by diversity so I would pick my Alma mater and Seattle over Davis any day of the week. Even with annoying rain, I’d spend 4 years of college at the UW again. Even though Seattle is 3 hours from Olympia, the state Capitol, you could still get a ton of opportunities for Poly sci in Seattle if you’re worried about proximity to state office.
@chaiheart: My son is a graduate of UCD and did not bring a car to campus until Junior year when he started an Internship. Even then, he rarely used and relied on his bike or the bus. Parking is always an issue at all the UC’s and UCD is no exception but with good weather, biking is the easiest and most reliable means of getting around Davis.
You’re welcome! I don’t know when you’re visiting but spring break for UC Davis started yesterday so even with COVID considered a lot of the buildings were closed to visitors. I would also recommend bringing an umbrella just in case (luckily it didn’t rain while I was there but it was raining on the way). And if you have a dog they’re allowed to stay at the Hyatt hotel but it does come at an extra fee. Just some extra info just in case haha
My D18 really wanted to attend a private university, but then applied to U of Arizona in March of her decision year after we saw how expensive her choices were, even with merit money. Within a week U of Arizona gave her $35k a year, admitted her to their Honor’s college and she chose to attend. Three years later we have no regrets. She is thriving as a Microbiology major and Anthropology minor, was able to start lab research as a Freshman, has great relationships with her Professors, and is about to apply to Med schools this summer. My D21 has been waitlisted at UCSC and was rejected by UCD, UCI, and UCSB and will probably end up going out of state as well. Colorado State ends up being affordable with WUE and she is also considering U of Arizona like her sister.
thank you all!! You’ve been so helpful <3
S21 admitted to CE but wanted CSE. Is it easy to change from CE to CSE at Davis?
Here is the change of major information: Changing Majors and Double Majors
Thank you!
Highly recommend ASU! My Cali SD who is now in his 2nd year at ASU/Barrett Honors College will graduate in 3 years. Two years ago he was rejected or WL at all Cali schools he applied to (4.6 GPA 33 ACT…) and was super bummed he had to go OOS. Fast forward 2 years, he will graduate with his BS in CIS in 3 years and will apply to grad schools for a MS in Data Science back in Cali. He will likely graduate grad school before his girlfriend graduates with her undergrad from UCLA! My daughter is a Junior and will be applying to UC schools this coming fall… not looking forward to this roller coaster ride again though. She is likely a stronger candidate than my son was based on her GPA, EC’s & leadership but may choose to go the CC route if she doesn’t get admitted out of high school. Both are good options depending on their goals IMO. Just wanted to share our experience and hindsight:)
Thanks so much for sharing. My husband is leaning toward ASU. I am leaning toward Northeastern. Son can graduates from either school in 3 years with AP credits. I am leaning toward NEU because they have good internship opportunities. I searched for ASU CS internship opportunities. Most said you likely won’t get one till Junior year. What’s your son’s experience on this? Son is leaning toward Wisconsin Madison after he searched about Barrett. Apparently there is an YouTube video by a child who dropped out of Barrett. Basically said Barrett is a great honor college, but not for STEM kids. That discouraged him a lot. Maybe things changed now? I am not familiar with social media, don’t know how to pm you. Otherwise I will pm you with above questions since this is a forum for UCD. Please pm me if you have more information about ASU CS program to share, really appreciate.
Would love to get a link to this video since I am evaluating Barrett for CS.
First, I need to make an apology that I made some mistakes. I asked my husband and son for information they got for ASU. It was not exactly as I understood. Son got discouraged by reading information out of those sites.

The YouTube video was posted by a girl with English major which my husband can’t find the link again yet.
dis is a uc-davis thread
UC Forum Champion Note: As another poster pointed out, discussions about other schools should be taken to that forum or you should start a new discussion in the appropriate forum.
Thank you.
