My opinion is slightly biased since I dont know much about UofA but I can tell you about UCD since I have visited and have been accepted (still contemplating my decision). UCD is a great school and has a phenomenal campus. The campus is quite large too, the largest of all the UC schools. If your looking to live on campus however, I wasn’t a big fan of the dorms and definitely not the dorm food! But I believe they have other eateries on campus with great locally grown food especially because they are located in one of the most highly agriculturalized regions of California. The surrounding area is beautiful as well, your close to Sacramento and not too far from San Francisco. I currently live in Chico and I’m about an hour and a half from Davis and its pretty darn nice here too. Rolling hills, swimming holes, lots of outdoor activities etc. UCD has a great reputation especially in the sciences and its quite popular for politcal science as well. Davis is not a bustling city, I believe population as of a few years ago was 60,000 people but its a safe place with a low crime rate compared to some regions here in Cali. The people are super friendly, great academics, great clubs, and not sure what else I could say? Sick library too. PM me if you have any more questions, I’m actually visiting tomorrow for decision day. Oh and everyone rides bikes in Davis so you will definitely need one, the town is super bike friendly.

Whats the out of state cost at UofA? Becuase I know UCD out of state costs are pretty high.

Yikes! You’re out of state for both!

I imagine that means that you have to pay full-freight to UCD (about $50k per year) and much less for UAz. Did you get a scholarship from UAz?

How much is each school costing you?

How much do you have to borrow for each school (include Stafford loans, Perkins, private, whatever)

As someone who grew up on the East Coast and now lives in the Mid-West I’d have to disagree. For most people, the only UCs they know are UCLA and UCBerkeley (which a lot of them call Berkely and assume is a private school). Arizona has a bigger name recognition, but a lot of that is also probably confusion with ASU.

What all that means is: Forget national name recognition as part of your decision process. A more important factor, especially for business/job concerns is where do you want to work/live after you graduate? UCDavis will have a somewhat stronger network in California though I suspect UA does pretty well there too, especially in So.Calif.

Speaking as loyal UCD alumnus I have to clarify that this is true, but it is something of a technicality. UCD is the largest UC because all the surrounding agricutural fields and farms that the school owns are included as part of the “campus.” But the inner campus where nearly all the classrooms and other buidlings are located is reasonably compact and more or less the same size as any other big state U.

As for comparison with UofA, I’d say that UC Davis has a higher reputation or ranking in academic circles, but Arizona is more well-known to the general public, especially outside of CA - largely due to athletics. Until recently UCD was Div II; Arizona is in the Pac-10.
