UC Entry Level Writing Req

Right now I'm taking AP Lit, but I'm not exempt until I get my scores. I'm wondering if since you can take the test on subsequent days, can I not take the entry test in May and be exempt from it? AP scores are sometime in July, and that's technically before admission (I think) so I'm a little confused.

I would just take the test. Its very basic (as long you answer the prompt in a competent manner). They give you 4 hours, I think, but you really only need maybe 2 hours. It takes place on a saturday at a local HS. Similar to an SAT test–but its writing.

Ah, I see. How do we find where the test locations are? Also for submitting AP test scores, can we just send them all in at once after we get this year’s results instead of sending them in two batches?

doesn’t passing an AP Lit class also place you out of having to take the exam?
most people in AP Lit classes who take the AP test also get a 3, 4, or 5 anyway which places you out of the exam as well.

what happens to the people who never place out of the exam and end up not taking it?

^ Yes

Affirmative!

Um, I think you need to actually take the exam and score a 3 or better. Here’s what the UCI catalog says:

"Every undergraduate must demonstrate upon entrance to the University a proficiency in writing. The Entry Level Writing Requirement (previously known as the Subject A Requirement), may be satisfied before entrance in any of the following ways:

Score 3 or higher on the College Board Advanced Placement Examination in English (Language or Literature); or

Score 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate Higher Level Examination in English (Language A only), or score 6 or higher on the IB Standard Level Examination in English (Language A only); or

Score 680 or higher on the Writing section of the SAT Reasoning Test, or score 30 or higher on the ACT Combined English/Writing test; or

Prior to enrolling in the University, complete with a grade of C or better a transferable college course in English composition worth four quarter or three semester units. (Once a student enrolls at a UC campus, courses from institutions other than UC may not be used to satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement.) Students who meet the University’s basic requirements for minimal transfer eligibility, which include two transferable college courses in English composition, satisfy the Entry Level Writing Requirement; or

Achieve a passing score on the UC Analytical Writing Placement Examination (previously called the Subject A Examination)."

Yeah, that’s what I mean. We don’t get the AP exam grades until July so we’re not exempt at May 9.

If you pass the AP test then you will be exempt. However, I would take the writing test just in case you don’t pass.

I was in your same situation last year, so I called UCI and they told me to just take the test in just case I don’t pass the AP test. I passed the entry level writing test and i ended up getting a 4 on AP Lit so I would have been exempt anyways. But it’s better to be safe then sorry. The test was really easy in my opinion.

Thanks, I think I’m going to take it anyway too though I’m confident about being able to pass the AP exam.

If you want, take a writing class at a community college. assuming you take a college level (and not a remedial level) class, it should transfer. however, i’m not sure what the deal is if you do not complete the whole writing sequence (WR 39b-c. Check assist.org for equivalences). I took the equivalent while i was in high school and dont have to take writing 39b-c nor did i take the placement exam.

however, its best to be safe if you are unsure.
