How do you calculate UC GPA? What is the formula?

Under the UC GPA system, is an: A+ = 5.3? A = 5.0? A- 4.7? What are the numbers? Or are all “types” of A’s seen as the same?

Does the UC GPA system use, for its bonus points: 5.3/5.0/4.7/4.3/4.0/3.7 etc.?

How many honors classes can you get bonus points for each semester?

look online

all A's are seen the same

I don't think you get bonus points for honors classes but you do for AP.

I have looked online, I can't find any formulas.

Are you sure there's no weight with honors classes? I thought as long as it was approved, it gives bonus pts.

You are correct that as long as honors classes are approved that they get extra points. A quick summary of calculating UCGPA:

Only grades from 10th and 11th grade used

For regular classes, any A is a 4, any B is a 3, any C is a 2, and so forth. Pluses and minuses don't matter.

For approved honors/AP classes, As are 5, Bs are 4, Cs are 3. Ds and Fs don't count. Pluses and minuses don't matter.

Only 8 semester grades or 4 year-long grades of AP/honors points can be used. Past that, all other grades are regular.
-Non-academic or non-college-prep classes aren't used when calculating GPA. This includes PE, etc.

Good luck with that.

Thanks katalina, but with that in mind:

Do I get to select those 8 semester/4 year-long grades? Or do they just pick the first ones?

Example:
My sophomore year, I take 4 honors classes. I get B's in all those classes.
Then in my junior year, I take another 4 honors classes, but I get A's in those classes.

Can I choose the 4 Junior classes instead of the 4 Sophomore classes? (Or perhaps they automatically do this?)

hey guys, where can I find a list of approved honours courses? my school (in canada) doesn't offer AP courses but we do have accelerated and college level courses (i'm tkaing all of them). Thanks!

Can someone answer my other question? :)

The weighted classes are automatically weighted. You don't weight them yourself. It wouldn't matter which ones were weighted becasue the UC GPA would be the same either way.

I don't know about which honors courses are certified; I think it's different for each school. At my high school, the only honors course that's weighted is honors English 11 (we don't have AP Eng Lang/Comp).

you dont select which ap/honor classes you want to use for bonus points.

you just calculate your 10-11 gpa on 4.0 scale (A=4,B=3 etc.)

and after that you add 0.4 to that GPA

so if you get straight A's, you will have a 4.4, which is the max UC gpa.

*this is assuming you have 8 semesters worth of ap/honor classes.

That's not necessarily true, Screwed Hopeful. I have a 3.88 uw and a 4.19 UCGPA with 8 semesters. You have to actually go through the process, there's no short way that I'm aware of.

https://pathways.ucop.edu/doorways/list/

i believe most info about specific classes at your respective schools can be found here

a 4.4 max is only achievable by taking 5 academic classes per year, assuming all honors/ap. If you take a sixth academic class, the 4.4 will decline.

JBern: if you do the math, you'll note that it doesn't matter which classes are weighted. An easy way to calc the UC gpa is: 4 x # of A's, 3 x number of B's, 2 x # C's, etc. Sum. Add 8 grade points if you have 8 semester's worth of UC-approved honors/ap/ib courses. Divide by number of classes.
