Hi guys. This is my first time making a post. Please spare me lol.
I recently got accepted to UCR about a month ago and stuff happened that affected my grades for a major course.
Anyways, I am a Biology major and one of the classes that is REQUIRED to finish is both Calc 1 and Calc 2. I am currently in Calc 2 and I had a test on April 9th at 7PM. My cousin passed away on the same day at ~3PM. My idiot self sent in my bio test that I had the same day and screwed up. I emailed the professor (who should be called teacher) at around 3:45PM telling him what is going on and if I can have an extension. He didn’t respond to my email nor any emails I sent that day or prior. He just doesn’t respond to his email period. Anyways, I have a 73.33 in the class, and that is without the exam I missed. He didn’t input my grades yet.
If I get a D or an F in this course, is there anyway I can take the course in the summer and go to UCR in the fall?

You need to document this. Send another nice email to prof so you have documentation and ask for an incomplete, send an email to admissions or whoever it is at your CCC about the situation just so you have more documentation. Then send these copies as well as earlier email to prof, and some sort of documentation to UCR verifying your cousin’s passing (I am so sorry) and ask if you can retake in summer. They are very understanding. While I am not admissions, if you have these things I believe there is a good chance they will let you take in summer.
Hi Ohm888
I’m so glad you responded, I didn’t know what to do.
I should send an email to my professor at CCC and ask for an IC? Wouldn’t that look bad on my transcript?
Also, would I ask them for documentation of my problem?
Well if it’s a matter of just doing the final he’ll have to give you an I. You can tell the UC you’re taking it in the next couple of weeks. Can it be done by June 1? That would be ideal.
Also let prof know nicely that you will be reaching out to UC with the medical documentation and the CCC if you don’t hear back because of the urgency — you’ve worked hard to get to UCR — and you hope he is able to respond. You could also send documentation to him about your cousin’s untimely passing.
No - Asking your professor for an Incomplete should be your last resort after nothing else works out.
1st request to your professor should be asking if you can take the exam as a makeup. If the professor fails to respond to your email, then forward that email to the Dept. Chair of Mathematics & ask the Chair to assist you in getting the professor to respond. If that doesn’t work, forward that new email to the Dean of Mathematics & ask them to reach out to your professor in allowing you to take a makeup exam. Sometimes the Chair & the Dean are the same person so if that doesn’t work, forward that email to the Dean of Student Services asking them to reach out to the professor & ask the Dean of Student Services to allow you to take a makeup exam. Makeup exams are at the instructor’s discretion & the Chair & Deans will respect the instructor’s policy but they will at least intervene to get the instructor to respond. Especially due to time constraints.
Only if that fails & your instructor denies your request to make it up, then seek an “EW” (Excused Withdrawal) through Admissions which is the new W for coronavirus. My school is allowing EWs until May 15th even though the semester ends May 22nd. Check with your school’s deadline date for EWs. An EW is much better than an Incomplete.
But— If grades are decided by a certain time and you have not retaken the test by then, getting an Incomplete and finishing quickly is preferable any day to a D or a C-. The course would not qualify as fulfilling the req so you are left with nothing except hoping you will be allowed to retake in summer, which is not optimal. Likewise, since the course is REQUIRED an incomplete with test taken in the next couple weeks (before SIR deadline) is preferable to a W.
One update: since transcripts aren’t due until July 1, you have a slightly longer time frame to retake the test. I suggest doing it before the SIR deadline of June 1 in case there are issues. But you have a month from there to get transcript in so an incomplete would have been resolved in its entirety on the transcript.
Remember - an Incomplete must be authorized & can only be authorized by your instructor.
Since your instructor won’t respond, that means your instructor has not authorized your Incomplete. Therefore, your best option is to take an EW instead of a letter grade since those are the only 2 options available at this point.
Find out your EW deadline & if you haven’t heard from your instructor by that date, that’s when you take the EW. If you wait after the EW deadline expires & your instructor finally responds by telling you no, they won’t authorize an Incomplete, then you’re stuck with a letter grade which will no longer be a 73%.
An EW, you control as the student.
An incomplete, the instructor controls if they’ll give it or not & your instructor won’t respond.
Do you know about the Application Update Form? I randomly found it when I was going through my account to see what I can do. One of the option is Change in Schedule/Courses Planned or In Progress. Should I go do that after emailing?
I was thinking about taking Calc 2 in the summer, but it ends in mid July, which will be way pass the deadline.
I emailed my professor and no response as usual.
The deadline for EW is 5/13/2020. If I do EW, is it possible for me to give an explanation to the UCs and send it in? I have a picture of us at her funeral and a little flyer like screenshot saying that she passed away due to heart problems. I’m not sure if I need a death certificate. She is pretty popular and there are some articles of her passing. If I need her death certificate, then I would have to ask my uncle and I don’t want to bother him.

Nontraditional
He does not allow make up exams. At my school, the deadline for EW is 5.13.20. With an EW, do you think my acceptances would be taken away since I didn’t meet the provisions of admission which is down below:
Meet all requirements needed for transfer eligibility to the University of California. All requirements must be met no later than the spring term, unless otherwise stipulated by the Undergraduate Admissions office. UC Riverside does not allow summer coursework to meet your Conditions of Admission Contract.
Complete the coursework you reported as “in-progress” or “planned” with minimum grades of C or better, while maintaining the high level of achievement you had at the time you were offered admission to UC Riverside. You are responsible for the accuracy and completeness of all information reported on your application and on the Transfer Academic Update (TAU). Consistency of self-reported information with actual grades and courses is required. Immediately notify your admission counselor of any changes to the program of study listed on your application via the Application Update Form or TAU (including attendance at a school different from that listed on your application), as these changes can affect your admission. Failure to provide immediate notification is in itself grounds for cancellation of admission.
Meet all requirements needed for your intended major. Many majors have lower-division coursework and a specific grade point average required for admission. These requirements are noted in your additional provisions of admission. It is your responsibility to ensure these requirements are met prior to transfer to UC Riverside.
Email Riverside Admissions immediately, you have 9 days until 5/13 to get their response. Keep the email very short, don’t go into detail about death certificate, funeral pictures or flyers, etc. Tell them that with coronavirus moving courses online & your cousin dying unexpectedly, it has caused a unique hardship, then ask for permission to take an EW without being rescinded. Ask them for permission to take Calc 2 in the summer so you can be ready for Fall. Anything is possible during this coronavirus situation. Include your Riverside Student ID # in your email so they can look at your information to make a decision.
You only have until 5/13 to figure this out since that’s the EW deadline. Don’t count on the Incomplete since your instructor still hasn’t responded & he must authorize it.
