Hey everyone! I’m a current UCSC freshman majoring in CS so if anyone has any specific questions about the major or just about the school in general, feel free to ask! My little brother just got off the waitlist for CS and will be attending next year. Congrats to everyone who got off the waitlist today!
I see that a lot of people are debating between SJSU and UCSC for CS and I can’t blame you- I went through it last year and it wasn’t an easy decision. My top 4 options were UCSC, UCSB, Cal Poly SLO, and SJSU so I’m very familiar with how the CS programs stack up to one another. Feel free to ask any questions
Got off waitlist today for biomed engineering (1st choice)! Also got off UCR waitlist. I have already committed to SLO but I don’t think it’s the right fit for me. I’d love any suggestions. UCR or UCSC? Which has the best engineering dept? I hear UCR is going up in ranks.
Job prospects are similar, but if your goal is to be a software engineer then computer science will be better. At UCSC, computer engineering majors are required to take physics classes and more electrical engineering-related classes. Both are great options but you just got to figure out what exactly he wants to learn and do after college.
UCSC has a stronger engineering department than UCR. Both are great schools, but having Silicon Valley right next to you is a huge advantage. I’ve talked to numerous CS students at UCSC and they have said that past engineering career fairs are amazing. Plenty of big tech companies (Microsoft and Amazon) show up every year and give on-campus interviews.
You can compare UCSC’s linkedin to UCR’s linkedin and you’ll notice that the top companies UCSC alumni work at are all major tech companies whereas UCR has some tech companies but is primarily composed of business/finance companies.
In general, it is extremely difficult (may be impossible) to switch to CS from anything else in any school. Highly impacted area. That risk is just not worth taking. Switching to Computer engineering is still possible, but not CS.
good luck to all those who got in off waitlist. my son is still waitlisted for art & design: game & playable media. If anyone cleared waitlist on that major - please share. thx.
It’s decent. I always see them boasting about how they’re one of the most diverse UC campuses but to be honest it doesn’t seem that way. They are, I believe, one of four UC campuses to be considered as “Hispanic serving institutions” of which the other three are UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, and UC Merced but I don’t know if this still holds true today.
UCSC has minor CS. Is it possible Student can graduate CE major with minor CS if it is hard to switch major. Also UCSC only offer CE master and PHD or CE & CS master and PHD. Is it true?
Were these waitlist acceptances mostly CS or is that just overrepresented in repliies? I saw psychology and another engineering major above. Is there any reason undeclared applicants would have a longer wait?
Congratulations! Do you mind me asking what her GPA (weighted and unweighted) was? My daughter is still on the waitlist for Psychology. Just trying to get a sense of things…thanks in advance.
