I plan on using TAG for UCSC, but when I fill out TAG I won’t have all the requirements met and you have until the next semester to finish them up. Is it better to just apply for TAG when I know for sure I have all requirements done and not planned?
When submitting your TAG app, include classes that are planned. If you don’t submit in September, you’ve missed the opportunity to submit a TAG for that cycle.
Now, the UCs understand that schedules change and that not all classes are offered (or other reasons that it won’t be exact). As long as you still fulfill the major stuff you should be fine.
When I TAGged to Davis, my spring schedule did not exactly match my TAG app, and nothing changed.
When I can apply my GPA will be slightly above a 3.0, and I won’t have all my requirements met. The GPA needed is a 3.0, can I be denied for this reason? I feel like I won’t stand out as other TAG applicants.
You don’t need to ‘stand out’ compared to other TAG applicants. So long as you meet the requirements, you’re in.
From: http://admissions.ucsc.edu/apply/transfer-students/tag.html
"To be considered for TAG, students must meet the following criteria at the time the TAG is submitted:
Student must be enrolled at a California community college (student may have attended colleges or universities outside of the California community college system, including institutions outside of the U.S.)
Student must have completed a minimum of 30 UC-transferable semester (45 quarter) units of course work with a minimum UC GPA of 3.0
Student must demonstrate adequate preparation in the subject areas of English composition (first course must be completed no later than the end of the fall 2015 term) and mathematics (must be completed no later than the end of the fall 2015 term) if these requirements have not yet been completed successfully
In addition, to qualify for TAG students must meet the following criteria by the end of the spring term prior to fall transfer:
Students must have completed the minimum of 60 UC-transferable semester (90 quarter) units and the seven-course pattern required for admission as a junior transfer. Note: First course in English composition (UC-E) and mathematics course (UC-M) must be completed no later than the end of the fall 2015 term.
Students must have completed a minimum of 30 UC-transferable semester (45 quarter units) of course work from one or more California community colleges
Non-native speakers of English must demonstrate proficiency in English by earning a score of 80 or higher on the TOEFL iBT (550 on the paper version) or by successfully completing two UC-transferable courses in English Composition with “B” (3.0) grades or higher. This proficiency requirement applies to students who completed any of their high school education (9th through 12th grades) or beyond in a country where English is not the native language.
Students must be in good academic standing (not on academic probation or dismissal status)"
Yeah, I’ve read that. But I just want to be safe and make sure I don’t get denied for not meeting requirements, because I know some people have had that happen. Or not having a high enough GPA.
People who say that (or have posted on here in the past) usually get denied because they didn’t fully read/understand the requirements.
If you’ve done your HW, you should be accepted.
Is it common to not be accepted into the major you wanted? I’m worried that may happen and not sure how to avoid that happening.
No, as long as you meet the requirements (which means read everything FULLY), your major is offered in the TAG program, and you have the same major on you UC application, you CANNOT be denied.
Thank you If you don’t mind, what was your GPA and major at UC Davis?
I’m actually at UCLA, but when I TAGged to Davis it was a 3.6 and I applied for psych and was told it was accepted in November
Also, do you still have to include a personal statement?
Oh, congrats on UCLA!
Sorry for all these questions, since I’m following a TAG program for a specific major and school, how do I apply to other UC’s where I may not meet the same requirements for that major? When you went to UCLA did you have to take extra prerequisites for the major you chose? I don’t know if that makes sense…haha.
I think I understand what you mean.
Before I applied, I opened up all the assist pages for psychology at all the schools I was considering. I then made a spreadsheet of the classes needed at each school, and notes of any overlaps (for example, almost every school wanted Psych 1)
I then looked further to schools that had REQUIRED vs RECOMMENDED courses. Both UCLA and UCB (my top 2) had required courses, so I took those first. Other schools like UCSD had some recommended courses that I did not take. I also kept in mind that I needed to complete IGETC and wanted to be TAP certified and created my schedules from there.
Just remember to list your TAG major as the EXACT SAME on your UC application, otherwise your TAG is void.
@avagadro23 Yes. UCSC told me that if your TAG gets accepted, the personal statement is just not as cared about, they really want to look at GPA and what classes you took and grades.
Answered perfectly. I think I’m gonna go do that now, that spread sheet idea haha. Thank you!!
Google docs is awesome if your looking for a good program!
Thanks again, both of you! So if I only apply to UCSC with TAG should I not include a personal statement? But if I happen to apply to other UC’s I should include a personal statement?
YOU SHOULD STILL INCLUDE A PERSONAL STATEMENT
DO NOT SKIP IT BECAUSE YOU THINK YOUR TAG WILL COVER IT
Specially if you are applying to other schools, that would be a horrible idea
