I'm in my second year (3rd semester) at my CC and didn't do too well my first year. I got a 2.77 last year and finished 22 units because I worked 35 hour weeks both semesters. I'm taking 20 units right now and will definitely get my GPA above a 3.0 by the end of the fall semseter!

I really want to get into a UC by next fall! I don't have 30 units completed to apply for a TAG. I'm a communications major and live in CA, do I have a chance of getting into any UC? I would plan on applying in a less impacted major that doesn't have any courses articulated for my school... Is this possible? And what do I need to be doing!

What do you want to major in? It will look bad if you apply for a major that you haven’t completed any classes for- “demonstrated interest in major” is something they consider. Your GPA is really low so I would apply for UCM, UCR, UCSC and then maybe a couple more that you want to go to.

I’m majoring in communications, and I have all of the pre-reqs done for it. But since it’s such an impacted major at pretty much every UC… I was planning on applying in a major that wouldn’t be impacted as much like African American Studies or something, and switching majors if/when I got admitted.

But isn’t there a chance for me to update my GPA so they can take my fall grades into account?

Yes you do update for fall grades but a 3.0 is still pretty low, and it will certainly not help your chances if you apply for a major that you have no “demonstrated interest” in. Like I said, apply to UCM, UCR, UCSC and a few others as reaches. Keep in mind that if it’s a really impacted major then you may not be able to switch after transferring, so you should research every UC’s policy for their communications department.

What is your UC GPA? Some of your classes don’t look transferable (speech, debate, forensics), and will not be accepted towards your 60 unit maximum. I also don’t see any math classes, have you fulfilled your math requirement?

All of my completed classes are UC transferrable, and the only one in progress that is nontransferrable is forensics and that is my extracirricular. I’m currently in a statistics class that transfers to UC’s. So as of right now my cumulative is the same as my UC GPA (2.77).

So by the end of fall semester you won’t have 42 units, you’ll have less-I’m assuming 39. That means you’ll have to complete more than 20 units in the spring. I think it would be best if you dropped some classes and got As in the remaining ones and took an extra year at the community college.

Well the Forensics team is worth 2 units, so i’ll have at least 40 UC Transferrable by the end of the fall semester. I might drop the idea of going to a UC and start focusing on going to SDSU or another good CSU. Would that be a better idea?

Yes, unless you are comfortable with attending UCM/UCR/UCSC, or you are willing to get all As for an ADDITIONAL year at CC, going to a decent CSU might be a good idea.
