UCAS 2017

Just strait CS(G400). She wasn’t sure if she was ready to specialize in CS yet.

Did you apply to any other AI programs?

The kid got an unconditional for Biomedical Sciences to Durham today.

WOWZA!! congrats to your kid, @VickiSoCal. That’s a great program (by UK standards, has a lot of flexibility in it). The kids I know at Durham are great, and really happy there (including 1 American). What college?

I don’t know any details yet, she called from school on break to tell me. The flexibility really attracted her, she was applying to chemistry and after visiting and talking to the people on campus they let her switch her application.

Congrats @VickiSoCal !!!

OK, I’ve now seen the Durham offer letter, it says we will be notified by March of college.

Hi. I’ve been lurking on thread until now. DS just got in unconditionally to quantitative IR at U Edinburgh. They accepted him 6 days after submission – is that unusual? Anyway, does anyone know anything about the quantitative IR program – in particular how well it prepares a student for grad school in US? Also how does that IR program compare to St. Andrews?

Thanks.

Congrats to your son, @psycholing! are you asking how the two programs compare in terms of prestige, and if the fact that your son heard so quickly is a reflection on his desirability as a student? For the former, both StAs and Edinburgh are very well respected for IR. The IR + quant course is unique to Edinburgh, and imo, will be help make your son stand out from the usual IR graduate (though obviously summer placements will matter hugely as well).

I actually don’t care about general prestige of the Universities as it is used here in the US. I just think it is likely that my son will pursue graduate education – either law school, or probably more likely an academic discipline. Wondering how the respective IR departments would be perceived by fellow US academics in the same or related fields. Thanks.

There won’t be a meaningful difference in how US grad schools rate them, either for undergrad in general or for IR. It is possible that any given person at any given university may have a preference b/c they have some personal connection or association, but that is true for any university! What will matter is what your son makes of the opportunities that he has.

(fwiw, although very different, both are great undergrad experiences!)

You may have already found the DPT site for Edinburgh. It lists the classes you will take for each course. You can also drill down to the actual class and see the current class workload. http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/16-17/dpt/utmahinrqm1f.htm

Really useful @KaffeineKitty. Thanks.

Conditional for U Edinburgh Psych BSc, with a 650 in Bio as the condition. WOO!

Congrats, @grevans1679

Still waiting on York and Bath anyone heard from them?

Vicki, are you still considering York and Bath over the offers you already have?

Not sure what she will do, York is ranked higher in chemistry than Edinburgh or St Andrews.

@VickiSoCal The difference in rankings between York and St Andrews is negligible. According to the CUG, from 2012-2016, St Andrews consistently ranked higher for Chemistry than York - this is the first time since 2012 York has placed above St Andrews on their Chemistry league table.

So I’d recommend against you choosing one over the other purely for ranking reasons. I would consider the location (town vs city), structure of the course (flexibility at St Andrews vs specialism at York), and opportunities at the university.

It’s my daughter who applied- she likes both programs but York seems to have more opportunities for industry placements.

^ These schools are very similar, but overall Edinburgh and St Andrews are higher rated Universities. (My daughter goes to a top 10 UK high school and York is generally considered a safety school whereas the others are target schools). One difference, is the York degree 3 years and the Scottish ones 4 years? Also, York will be mostly English kids with many from the North whereas Edinburgh and St A’s will be more diverse and more international.

Just visit all three and decide what would be the best fit for your DD.
