@okeydokeypokey - The general understanding of a “hook” is something that makes you stand out and/or that fills an institutional need. Some “hooks” carry more weight than others (e.g., a recruited athlete is probably the strongest hook, followed by children major donors; being a member of an unrepresented minority (URM) – preferably with high stats – is generally considered to be a “hook,” winning a big national award (e.g., Intel) or participating in a nationally recognized, highly selective program like TASP or RSC) are all “hooks.”) There are others, but you get the idea.

I got accepted EA! 36 ACT, 1580 SAT, 3 subject tests (800 US History) 4.5 weighted GPA, very strong music ECs. I was wondering if all the acceptance letters said you have a “strong voice” because I remember my interviewer saying that exact thing to me pretty early in my interview. It seems weird that the letters would be personalized but ???

I had a really strong interview.
@ekvanlieshout my D’s acceptance letter said the same thing last year. She was in school choir but it was by no means her strongest EC (or attribute). We assumed they were referring to how she came across in her application. It’s great that their wording matches your talent! While it’s not 100% personalized, clearly the interviewer and the adcom experienced the same message from you. Congratulations!
So no one knows the deferral rate?
I was accepted EA and completely shocked! To everyone who was deferred or rejected, it will all work out in the end; don’t give up hope! It also does not mean that you won’t get into any other schools. I was deferred from Notre Dame a few days ago, and I was crushed, and I thought that I would not get in anywhere else, but I ended up getting into UChicago. Good luck to everyone!

it feels like there are more deferrals than rejections this year!! or maybe it’s just bc people don’t tend to post rejections on CC who knows
