Subjective
Essays: I got in through Questbridge, so my essays were slightly different. I had to write three. One was an autobiographical essay where I focused on being a cultural outsider, the second was about James Bond villains (really), and the last one was about frequenting an art gallery with internationally renowned artists and sharing their experiences and how that shaped what I want in the future.
Teacher Recs: Pretty damn good. One of my teachers called me a "really good prose stylist" and said I had no weaknesses at all. (I know that's not true because I suck at math - I got an F in Algebra II and I got a C in Statistics last year, but I love that she was so nice.)
Counselor Rec: Didn't read it. :(
Supplementary Material: (research abstracts, music recordings, art slides)
None
Hook: I'm very involved in my local art culture, I suppose you could call it. Like interviewing famous bands for my high school newspaper. Umm.. I can also write really awesome. ;)

Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?
Honestly, I'm living proof that test scores aren't everything. Pour your heart into those essays and really present yourself as the person you are, not the person you think the university wants.

When do you all think letters will come in the mail? And what does Chicago send with acceptance packages?

Omfg It Better Be The Best Effing Thing Ive Ever Gotten

Chicago sends you the official admission letter from our friend Ted inside a spiffy silver folder for our moms to scrapbook. Umm.. there's also an informational form, explaining what comes next, and a reply paper that you have to mail in with your deposit to make it official that you will enroll at Chicago.

At any rate, that's what I got. I takes about a week and a half for it to arrive?

No, it should take a few business days to arrive... you should all have them by Tuesday at the latest.

this is the most intimidating thread i've ever seen. people here are
statistically impeccable. dude.
good writers.
extracurricularly involved with leadership and commendations.

ho crap do i have big shoes to fill when i apply next year.
congrats!!!!! you scared a junior!!!!! :D

I live on the other side of the country, so it took longer than the usual, I suppose.

Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: Wrote on topic 5, used a quote from a favorite movie as prompt, didn't think I was going to get in because I didn't write an official prompt (guess it didn't matter). Tooting my own horn, but it was creative, different, and endearing. Without this essay, I would've appeared like another boring applicant with OK numbers and "meh" ECs. I'm 100% positive this is what got me in.
[]Teacher Recs: English and science teachers, they wrote about personal experiences with me and used my quotes.
[]Counselor Rec: Bland.

[*]Advice: DON'T WRITE AN ESSAY BASED ON WHAT YOU THINK THE ADCOMS WILL WANT TO HEAR. JUST DON'T DO IT! It sounds fake and people can point it out if you aren't using your real voice in the essay.[/ul]

Jesus. I really want to know how many people UChicago accepted. This is insane!

Letters were sent out today- if you get to the login page for ThickEnvelope, it shows pictures of them packing stuff and one of the brochures is labeled "Welcome Home."

This is just too ironic- here's the last line of my Why Chicago? essay:
Going to the University of Chicago would be more than just going to college- it would be welcoming my mind home.
Crazy, I tell you.

Subjective[ul]
[]Essays: I chose the Borges y Yo prompt. My essay was about my kinda normal, involved in leadership side and my “Caveman”, side (Caveman is my nickname at the summer camp where I work because one of my biggest hobbies is primitive technology –(think leather working, making arrow heads, creating fire with two sticks)). It developed into how my normal side wants to be a diplomat and Caveman wants to be an anthropology prof. and how these two careers are kinda opposed. At one point, I used hypothetical dialogue between my sides to get the point across. It ended with them agreeing the Chicago was the place to go where they could both thrive. I know it sounds real convoluted, but it worked out. My other essays were alright I guess.
[]Teacher Recs: Awesome! I owe my teachers big time! I also got a great supplemental rec from my principal who spoke about my leadership.
[]Counselor Rec: Also amazing! I think we all need to thank our counselors more often!
[]Supplementary Material: Since my main essay talked about my weird hobbies like leatherworking, I made a leather folder embossed with the UChicago crest to put my app. In. It ended up turning out real cool and could’ve put me over the edge. I also included a small essay about the process of leather working. Sadly, I sent the original, so I don’t think I’ll get it back.
[]Hook: (recruited athlete, cured cancer- only major ones that actually would have made a difference, please) << by this definition none. [/ul]

[]Extracurriculars: Student Senate Pres., Model UN, Band, lots of leadership stuff, theatre, other stuff
[]Awards: A couple of essay contests, some school awards
[li]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?: Try to make the adcoms remember you for a trait. For me, I wanted to get across my interest in leather working and primitive technology, so I sent the leather folder to grab their attention. [/ul]
[/li]
