Hi everyone,

I am kind of worried about my transfer app. to UCLA. My GPA is pretty good for my major (Art History, 3.96, Scholars program certified (from SMC), but now I'm worried. I'm 25 years old, and years ago after high school I enrolled in a college pretty last-minute after high school and ended up with WF's after I basically stopped going to classes after some personal issues arose. I addressed these issues in the personal statements.

The GPA I listed above is just from SMC - how much are they going to factor in my past college experience? I'm more anxious about it now with probably just a few weeks left to decisions getting released than I was when I applied!

Dont worry.
You will be the 1st to hear from UCLA.
You will get in…

if it’s just W’s and no grades, it won’t matter, just hang out and await the decision, your chances look good :-)

if there are any F’s at all, they would have needed to have been made up at your current community college for a better grade by taking the classes over again. I am not certain what a WF is so maybe this doesn’t help at all though.

i googled WF grade and got this:

A grade of “WF” is calculated into the GPA as an “F” grade and the course also counts as an attempt for fee assessment. “WFs” are recorded for a withdrawal after the withdrawal deadline for the first two course attempts, and “WF” is recorded for a third-attempt course withdrawal regardless of withdrawal date.

okay so with that info. i am going to go with the second option and that you would have needed to make up those classes for a letter grade other than an F or they will indeed be calculated into your GPA and you will not end up with a 3.96, unless you already have done this then totally disregard that and you’re fine.

the classes were for the art institute - i don’t even think they are available at smc (or even ucla). also, from what i’ve heard art institute credits don’t transfer anywhere other than other art institutes.

I guess I’m just sort of unclear about what counts and what doesn’t - the art institute stuff was from like, 8 years ago! I didn’t give it much thought until I sent my uc app out. thank you all for your responses!

If the courses don’t transfer (and they most likely won’t), then it won’t affect your GPA in any way.

Kind of like how non-transferable courses at community colleges don’t affect your GPA, these won’t either.

So if you reported this, you should be fine.

UCLA has begun the practice of admitting several thousand students more than it can handle. In other words there are no physical seats for between 3 and 5 thousand students!
The administration claims that they are not doing this but it is a fact. I have seen many students who cannot find classes for the fall even though they have been admitted. This means that the usual four year degree will take about 6 years at best. UCLA has become a profit driven institution that has lowered its priorities on education. I have been at UCLA for fifteen years and I finally quit my job over this foolishness. Go elsewhere if you want a good education!!!
