I'll try to make this simple as I can without getting into every specific detail and story.

I messed up a few times throughout my junior college experience. During my second semester I took too many units (18) while taking architecture studio courses and couldn't manage the 19+ hours of class and coursework I was putting in daily. I dropped 3 classes and later made them up. I thought that mistake was going to be last and only time something would negatively affect my transfer possibilites, but things didn't turn out the way I thought they would. About a year later, I received an F in a visual communications class but later made it up. Then that summer, I had to drop another class and was not allowed to take an incomplete.
I feel almost certain I've blown my chances at getting into my choice schools- UCLA, SLO, UCB, and now I'm not even sure most Cal States/privates will accept me. Are my chances as bleak as I think they are and what can a person in my current circumstance even do at this point to make my original goal salvageable?

For more perspective-
Current GPA 3.74
73 Units
completed all coursework for UC, CSU
Major- Architectural History and Studies
Great Recs. and Vol. work

3.73 is great. Average GPA accepted to UCLA for Architectural studies was 3.62 for 2011. Those Fs do look bad but you should be really concerned if you were a border line case IMO. The ws are not that important assuming you’re less than 5(even more isn’t even that bad from what I’ve heard) or something.

Those are issues but it isn’t as dramatic as you make it seem it is. Bottom line, don’t you dare talk yourself out of applying to any school you want to. 3.73 is great! If you’ve made the fs up, then there is nothing more you can do about it. Just keep on doing what you’re doing.

I repeated all the course work with A’s in everything but one class (B in eastern religions) and by the end of this semester, my GPA should rise to 3.79.

You can go to a counselor and get the Fs removed if it’s been a few semesters since you took the course. I had like two Fs and I didn’t want to retake them and they were removed

I had something similar. I have a 3.93. I was ill my second quarter and got two F’s, a C (in a 2.5 unit class), a W, and a P. I retook both F’s for A+'s and a Berkeley rep who came by my cc told me they won’t count it against me if I explain it in my app, which I did. So it should be fine for you too. Let’s hope we all get in. :)

I would check about SLO though. I know UCs take the new grade. I’m not totally sure about state schools. SLO has a lower GPA requirement than Cal or LA though, and I expect you’d meet it even if they averaged out your new and old grades.

Thanks for all your perspectives. I’ve glanced over these forums for a few years and finally decided to post for the first time since I never really found anyone’s story to be representative of what I thought my situation was. It’s easy to get sucked into the panic produced by people with perfect or near perfect applications.

Lastly, would it do any good to take additional higher level coursework beyond requirement just to demonstrate my ability to move on from the mess-ups and establish a better picture of my academic history? I know that schools do not necessarily applaud GPA boosting and most of the units would exceed the credit limits and/or eligibility to receive credit towards major completion.

Oh, admission to that major depends on your portfolio, right? GPA is not a good predictor for admission. So I guess it’ll just comes down to that. Are you in TAP?

No TAP at my cc for UCLA, but I have TAP for USCB. From what I’ve been told, UCLA portfolio requirement is not as crucial as other programs like USC, UCB, SLO and CPP. Those schools are more schools of architectural practice than they are theory and history.

Ok, becuase I’m looking at the numbers from last year, and out of 208 who applied, 12 were admitted. The average applied and accepted GPA were relatively low at 3.28 and 3.62, which makes it look like it wasn’t based on grades. But then again, I really don’t know much about admission to the Art schools at UCs. I’d say your pretty much all but in at UCSB though.

■■■■■, Sotelo you have a awesome GPA. did anyone check the impacted list for Sotelo to see if his major is impacted.

scrolling up to look

yes, LAforlife, executed that perfectly. Just to reiterate what she already said, last year average admitted gpa was three six you have a three seven. You should fair well.

I mean how was your past few quarters/semesters? How did you fair on your Personal Statement? Did you discuss your tragedies? I am not sure if any of those schools even read PS though. Check the matrix for that one.

It sucks though, that you didn’t apply to other UC’s just in case. Good luck…

I didn’t apply for Fall 12’ to UCs. I was merely asking the same question I would have asked 6 months from this time. Sorry if it appears I’ve misrepresented myself. I should have explained better that I’m now finishing the last courses I need for UCLA and UCSB. I’m currently at a 3.74 and by the end of the semester I’m all but certain I’ll have a 3.79 with 74 units completed.

The only schools I’m applying for this time around are private schools back east since I’ve met the requirements and the fact that they are still accepting Fall 12’ transfers. I’m applying to NYU, Boston University, and Tufts. I didn’t bother mentioning that as seeing this is the forum for UCs and not private schools. That, and for the fact I already know that private schools have a bit more discretion in their admission procedures than public schools.

i’ve been bamboozled. Dude you have a three seven and you’re tripping about apps THIS fall? You still have Spring/Summer/Fall… You have a lot of time. You’re stressing over nothing, just relax you got this in the bag if you just keep doing what you have been.
