I hear you have to apply to this major. I know there are requirements, a certain gpa, to be competitive. How hard is it to get into this major? Is it like a 50/50 thing or highly selective. I can't tell when someone is just like 'oh you need a 3.3 to be competetive' because I have no idea how hard it is to get a 3.3.

I'm going to copy part of a post I made in another thread:

"There's no real data for acceptance into biz-econ because there's no way to measure how many people switch out of the pre-major before applying due to change of mind, or finding out that they probably won't get in, etc. The thing is, there's a formula called "primary score" and there's a website on the UCLA biz-econ website that can calculate it for you. If you meet the criteria of the formula when you apply, then you get in, and if you don't, you don't.

So like, the people who apply already know they'll get in, and the people who know they won't get in don't apply or have already switched to something else (plain econ for example, which has lower standards). Therefore there's no accurate "acceptance rate" that can be measured. However, it does have a reputation as one of the most competitive L&S majors to get into. "

3.3 isn't hard if you take your studies seriously. The UCLA biz-econ website itself states that meeting the admissions requirement is very doable, and that the main reason why people don't make it is due to poor performance in freshman year, whether it is because of the adjustment process, getting caught up in the social scene, etc. So as long as you recognize that fact, you can avoid the pitfalls that lots of first year students make (my personal advice is to not think about frats/sororities, at least yet--they take way too much time away from academics).

My guess is that if you're motivated enough to be asking questions on this message board and to have been admitted to UCLA, you won't have too many problems here academic-wise.

Getting a 3.3 is quite doable for the requisite courses for getting into the BizEcon program... I took Econ 11 with Prof. Hellwig last quarter and his curve was very generous. About half the class was pre-BizEcon, and about half the class got a B+ (3.3) and above, even though our midterm median was about 63/100. I haven't taken Econ 101 yet, though...

Thanks a lot guys this has been really helpful.
