I am currently taking AP Chem and Bio in high school.
I was wondering that if I get a high enough score, do I get any credit for the freshmen courses at UCLA College of Letters and Science?
The UCLA site says for Bio it is unassigned and for Chem it is introductory. What does this mean? Which exact courses do I receive credit for?

Most AP tests give you unassigned units, meaning that they don’t exempt you from classes but can be used to fulfill the minimum number of units needed to graduate (180). Off the top of my head, I know AP Calc can exempt you from one or two math classes (depending on your score and AB/BC), AP foreign language can exempt your foreign language requirement (helpful because that’s three classes out of the way with a good score), and either AP English test can exempt you from one or two writing classes depending on your score. Those are the most common ones, there may be others but they are more specific to a major (like Psych, Econ). In regards to what you’re taking, Bio will not really help you besides giving you units, and Chem will not exempt you from any intro classes because there’s no “Intro Chem” here.

I don’t know what you’re major is, but if I was to do it again here’s what I would do:
Study hard, get a 5 on Calc BC, pass out of two math classes.
Get a 5 on a language, pass out of three language classes.
Get a 5 on either English test, fulfill two graduation requirements (two classes)

I feel like none of the other units help, but taking AP Chem will help you a lot if you take Chem here since people really struggle with that class and competition is tough.

AP Bio/Chem/Physics are only good to give you units, which I suppose help you graduate faster (assuming you’ve taken all the classes required for your major/minor/GEs), but they’re mostly good for getting your higher class standing (fresh/soph/junior status) for better enrollment times.

A 5 on the sciences will not pass you out of intro chem. A 5 on Calc AB, or a 4/5 on BC will pass you out of several math classes. Passing an AP foreign language is also definitely useful since you won’t have to take language again in college. And a 5 on (one) English test will pass you out of one writing class, but you’ll still need to take another one here.

But yeah, like Bauss said, AP Chem/Bio/etc. will >definitely< help you prepare for intro science classes, so I would certainly recommend taking them. I sure wish I did.
