UCLA Communications Transfer

I am not an international student! Otherwise I wouldn't dare to apply as a comm major without at least a 4.0 GPA =/

btw, I've also applied to Cal, UCSD and Davis as well!
But I haven't heard from any of them yet....=(

Oh ok, you just mentioned "home country" that's why I though so ;-). I am new to this country, I've been here for 3.5 years (permanent resident).

I have also applied for Communications in UCSB, UCSD and Rhetoric @ Cal. I wonder why UCSD is still not releasing any results for me as well??? I honestly expected them to do it way later, in April, as UCSD is one of the most prestigious among all UC's. UCSB will release some application decisions tomorrow, so good luck to all who applied there!

nope, just 6/7...my cc doesn't offer one of the pre-reqs

Oh well... let's hope it will all be good for all of us? Have any of you guys been accepted to any other UCs yet?

wow…you guys have me really worried now. first off, ive never heard that communication studies doesn’t count under TAP!! ***…

my stats:
GPA: 4.0 UC (3.95 cumulative, got a B in a non-transferable class)
Major: communication studies
Alternate: Sociology, thank god TAP is good for this
TAP and IGETC certified

Pre-major requirements:

Communications - did everything that my college offers and appears on assist. i even went beyond the asking of 3 additional courses, and did 4.

Sociology - Did everything my college offers and appears on assist.

I am in PTK and AGS and did a lot of community service/extra curricular. I also have a part time job which i work 15-20 hours a week. I believe my essays are pretty good, had them looked over by a few people…

Hey I know the admissions site just says late April but anyone know what day they usually start around?

Hey guys,

I applied to Communications at UCLA as well, so I feel your pain.

My stats:

Cumulative GPA: 4.0
Finished all prereqs but one, which I am completing now.
Currently holding two positions in my school’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, worked 20+ hours per week while attending CC, organized some on-campus voter registrations drives, and other fundraisers at my CC.

It’s amazing that the average GPA of admits for this major is so high. I am pretty worried about my own chances of getting in. I just want it to be May already!!

Good luck everyone :)

vmason,
does your cc offer all 7 pre-req?

I don’t know any cc around the bay area is offering the 2 remaining pre-reqs I miss…(I’m sad)…
I really shouldn’t have applied to this major if I knew so many applicants were able to finish all 7 pre-req

Melodycwm-

My cc offers 5/7. They don’t offer the equivalent of Comm. St. 10 or Anthro 33. I don’t know if you’re penalized if you’re cc doesn’t offer equivalent courses. Maybe you are? I didn’t think that was the case, although I’m not sure.

Well, I think I won’t be penalized.
I would only be a lot less competitive…
Plus+ my GPA does not reach the perfect 4.0

you will not be penalized if you were unable to finish the pre-req’s for your major if your CC did not offer it within 2 semesters of your transfer. so basically, if they did not offer the class fall 08 or spring 09, dont worry. thats what every rep has told me. i think this is old news and in other post but just trying to calm some nerves.

dreamingirl, global studies shouldn’t even be considered into the discussion. its a dam new major about 4 years old and it’s to my knowing that unfortunately it is a very competitive major. the thing that crosses my fingers is that the prereqs are optional or “strongly encouraged but not required” which is a difference, but if you complete them I think your in the ballpark, I am done with 7 of them after this semester ends which is all my prereqs. let’s all hope for the best in all our majors. and that we can all get in. Let this be a celebration time.

I am applying this year for communications at UCLA. I currently have a 4.0 and and many leadership e.c’s?

Does it take into any affect if you do not finish all your prerequisites by the end of fall, but you will finish everything by the end of spring? Does everything need to be finished by the end of fall?

ok this is a really late reply, but to bdeakins832-- i got into Comm. Studies at UCLA and I am finishing up one of the prereqs (statistics) right now (for spring). So yeah there you go. Also, I did not take 2 of the prereqs! BUT this is because they weren’t offered at the CC I’m going to. I was worried because I used to go to another CC and realized when I was in the midst of applying last Nov. that those prereqs were offered at my old CC. But yeah things worked out apparently! For a bit more info, I have a 4.0, but no EC’s on my app (I got involved in a club over this semester though) – this is the main reason I wasn’t sure I’d get admitted. Did have my essays looked at by a few people and felt pretty confident about those (one of my interests/strengths is writing I’d probably say). Had some former employment to put in the app, don’t know how much that is taken into account honestly.

thank you! I think I am just going to go ahead and complete all the prereqs by the end of fall to just show completion in my application. I was curious because i did not want to risk getting a B in the course, but I think it will be fine. I have a lot to think about though.
I am confused about when to apply. On the UCLA communication website it says that you start applying Sep. 16 to Oct 16. Is that true or does it start from October to November? One last question, when did you find that you were accepted in the communications department for ucla?

You know, I’m not sure about that. When I applied I simply did so during November when they were accepting applications through the UC system. I’d assume that time frame is for someone other than a normal transfer, esp. b/c it mentions something about having to have completed a certain amount of UCLA units and some other stuff on that same page? But I’d probably check.
Of course I can answer your second question :stuck_out_tongue: I found out by signing into the UCLA site when they emailed me on Apr. 24th, letting me know decisions were posted.
Anyway feel free to ask anything else if you want :)

Im poli sci major that got in with a 3.7 with no TAP…

hello !
I would like anyone’s take on this: i’m applying to UCLA as a communications major / UCB as media studies from UCSD (ucsd gpa: 3.8 + stellar high school record + solid work experience). I know the major is highly impacted and practically impossible to get in, but this major is totally fit for my ambitions and career goals. But, since I’m from ucsd I’m not going to be able to complete all the prereqs (but i’m trying)…what do you guys think of my chances? should I apply to another major like Poli Sci or Art History or risk a 3.8 in Communications?

feedback would be much appreciated. thanks

I can’t really help with Comm Studies @ UCLA - they had almost 1000 applicants this year for less than 100 spots. If you have TAP - that REALLY helps - you can applu for 2nd (less capped) major! Cal is easier in my opinion, make sure you have all pre-reqs done with sound grades and if you do get in, take summer session and enroll in Media Studies 10. You’ll need to declare major in late Fall semester and Media St 10 MUST be completed by that time. You might wanna include in your application that you intend to enroll in Summer so they know you are serious about it!

Good luck!

what’s so special about communications as a major? what exactly is studied for the major?
