UCLA Freshman Alumni Scholarship

Hi, I recently received a phone call saying that I am a Finalist for the Scholarship.

I was wondering what to expect in my interview.

Thank you.

Did you get the call today? My mom said I received a call from UCLA today when I wasn't home but the lady hasn't called back yet so I'm wondering if this is for it or not. I hope it is =)

a lady called me but she didn't say anything about finalist...(or did she?) ...she just told me she call me back sometime next week to tell me the interview date.
um march 29 i think
man, i can't even remember what she said, i wish they would've emailed us.

I don't remember, does being a Finalist mean you have moved on from the first round of interview? If so, I might remember a little about the interview.

any advice? :D From looking at past threads, the interview is pretty intense.

Yikes! I've got an interview tomorrow night! Should be interesting!

i was just called today!
my interview is on Sunday!

can anyone give any good advice about what to expect in the interview?

the man said there will be 7 people there and they will ask a series of open-ended questions.

anyone know what kind of questions these will be?

I was called today and have an interview Sunday as well!

my friend had the interview last year and she remembered them asking her who was her inspirational and all of that masa.

oooh....from what i've heard, the questions are thought-provoking

mine's on saturday!

Mine is today. Yikes!

^good luck!
let us know how it goes!

I had the interview last year. For mine, there was a panel of five alumni and they take turns asking you random questions (favorite _____, career plans, leadership, etc). Pretty intimidating, but now that I look back on it... I was just nervous. Haha. Just be prepared to answer whatever you're being asked. There's no right or wrong answer, they're usually questions that make you ponder. It's a pretty normal interview, and as always, they take questions at the end. I ended up getting the scholarship even though I thought I did horribly.

Good luck!

From what kchen posted, I think I can recall what was asked. There were more than 5 in the panel during my interview - probably 6-7. You sit in a roundtable and each asks you one question while going clockwise. There are two rounds of questions probed by each alumni.

Some questions are easy like what kchen posted - introduce yourself, hobbies, career plans, group projects, leadership, interests.

Few were simple behavioral questions - to test how you would respond in a simple situation.

The hardest ones for me were about your view and current events. I am politically apathetic, so when asked "Tell me 3 global problems you see in the near future and how you can contribute to fixing these problems" I gave simple and unintellectual responses. Therefore, I didn't get it.

Another hard one was state something you read in the newspaper that was controversial to you and state why. To any applicants, or prospective applicants, keep up with the news, politics, and you'll be fine. Present yourself smartly and have good communication skills. Remember there are no wrong answers; just give answers that make sense and be confident.

It's good training if this is your first interview. You'll learn and train yourself to give proper responses for future internship/job interviews.

I just got a call for an interview this weekend. Is it everyones experience that there are a few questions relating to current events? What are the behavioral questions like? Does anybody know how many people from the interview stage actually end up getting the scholarship?

Thanks!

It wasn't that bad at all in my opinion. I had three alumni question me in the same round-robin fashion that has been described by others. They didn't ask me a global question, but they did ask what I thought was the biggest problem facing the US today.

I applied to the Alumni Scholarship but I haven't heard anything back yet. Have they already contacted all finalists?? Aww... :/

Hm, honestly, I don't remember being asked any questions related to politics or global problems... I would've failed the interview cause I didn't really keep up with current events during my last semester. I did get a lot of situational questions, i.e. "Name a time when you failed - how did you turn around?" or "Have you ever worked with a team? What did you contribute?" Then we moved onto more personal stuff, like "Why UCLA?" "What are your career goals and how do you plan to achieve them here?" and "What is your favorite book and why?"

Five people were interviewed from my region, which is a bit weird considering that I live in the tenth largest city in America. I guess they probably divided the city.

Thanks for the advice guys! :D
