Hi, I'm currently a freshman at Mt San Antonio College. I have been accepted into the honors program, and I have been working on getting TAP certified. All of the history classes that are required are available at my community college, except for an introduction class that must be taken at UCLA. If I take this class over the summer, would it bolster my chances of acceptance? More than likely I'll transfer with a 3.8 gpa and great ec's, but I just want to know if it's worth shelling out a couple thousand dollars for this class.

I used to be a history major who wanted to transfer to UCLA, so I know a lot about UCLA’s history program and what UCLA wants from their applicants. Now, I’m a philosophy major. :)

UCLA won’t count it against it history majors who don’t complete that class if it isn’t offered at their college. Furthermore, the class isn’t offered at any community colleges that I know of. Even if it were, it wouldn’t be worth spending money to complete the class at another community college if UCLA won’t penalize you if you didn’t take the class at that other college.

In short, you’ll be fine. You’ll just have to take the class at UCLA. Also, I’m a member of my school’s TAP program. What I know about TAP is this: for your major, if you have a 3.5 or 3.6+, you should have a good chance of being admitted. A very good chance.

talk to a UCLA rep they are very helpful! I met with one many times actually and I never thought to ask that. I don’t think not taking it would hurt you though. History isn’t a very competitive major, I think you need about a 3.7 for UCLA. Anyway my advise would be to just wait and take it at UCLA, and focus on all of your other classes. If possible take every history class available at your school. Sounds crazy but the UCLA reps I’ve spoken to always say that taking as many pre reqs is the best way to be competitive besides a high GPA.

Not familiar with the major, but here is the link for stats from 2013.

It has a 47% admit rate, and an average admitted GPA of 3.7.
With TAP and your stats, I would say you have a very good chance! Good luck!

@sonic23 Actually, history is pretty competitive as far as humanities majors go.

@Daenvercash07 Don’t bother taking the class until you transfer. It would be an extreme waste of money because the school does not penalize you for not taking it before you apply. The course is a lower division capstone seminar which consists of about 15 to 20 students. It’s a discussion class that allows you to work closer with the professor and learn the proper methods for studying history. Like all impacted majors, you are classified as a pre-history major until you take the class, so the school knows that no one will have completed it prior to transferring. After you complete that course, you are required to take an upper division one that leads up to a research paper at the end of the quarter. If you transfer, take McClendon, she’s a lot of fun and a really great professor. Good luck.

Probably the best response in this topic.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I’ll double check with one of my school’s transfer counselor, and I’ll try to get in contact with a UCLA rep as well. Good luck to those who plan on transferring!
