Hey guys, so I am currently preparing to enroll to a cc for next quarter and I was wondering if there are any people that have done the IGETC for psychology? Are there extra prerequisites that I need to take before transferring to Ucla or are those included in the IGETC? what things look good & help to stand out on application?
Please help! :)

Take a look at assist.org, it’ll tell you which pre-reqs (and the articulations) you need for your UC/major.

In terms of other ways to look good/stand out: Have a high GPA, take the right courses, participate in ECs, and do a good job on the personal statement. Also, you should have a back-up school/UC, UCLA and Cal admissions are never a sure thing.

I have back ups, but I really needed to know more about the IGETC.

I just transferred to UCLA for Psychology. You need to complete IGETC as well as the classes on the Assist.org website which are an intro to psych class, a statistics class, a biology class, a chemistry or physics class, and a intro to philosophy class. All of those classes are on the IGETC list also, so if you plan accordingly then you should be able to get out of your cc in 2 years.

Just to clarify because you seem to be pretty early in the transfer process and seem to be still figuring things out, typically most people focus on their major prerequisites as that’s normally the most significant requirement for admission to your major at a UC. IGETC, while important, isn’t necessary to transfer as there are alternatives, but you won’t be admitted without completing some of your major prerequisites. In your case, many of your major prerequisites will also satisfy courses for IGETC, so it would be wise for you to prioritize those classes over others. Not simply because they meet two criteria but because they’re the more important courses that will determine your acceptance.

Sorry, if I over-explained this and you were already aware, but you seem very focused on IGETC whereas you probably should be more focused on fulfilling the requirements listed on assist.org for your major. Definitely complete both though, finishing IGETC will shorten your time after you transfer and still is beneficial for admission purposes.

IGETC is recommended, not required
However if you complete IGETC then you will not be required to take any additional general-ed requirements once at UCLA. Furthermore if you aim at completing IGETC and your campus choice changes, you are still assured of satisfying the general-ed requirements.

no, i knew that & i wasn’t prioritizing, but merely inquiring more about the igetc, i already looked at assist, and everything prior to making this post and just wanted to know how this worked for other students at UCLA and if there were any other things they did to help them stand out,as in did they just stick to the prerequisites listed or did they take extra classes besides the ones listed & required & do other things like clubs & volunteer work. That is all i need to know really.

However thanks @mikemac thats goood to know, failure622 for the helpful tips on standing out, & katdawg1 congratulations! and thanks
