UCLA TAP Acceptance Statistics

A few community colleges publish TAP acceptance rates, but not all do. I've never found any official TAP statistics... Until now.

http://www.ugeducation.ucla.edu/tap/pp_ug_admissions.pdf

Across all majors, in 2010 the acceptance rate for TAP applicants was 74.3%—More than 2.5 times the non-TAP rate. That PDF also includes breakdowns for broad major categories (life science, humanities, social sciences, etc). The humanities acceptance rate is over 90% for TAP applicants.

TAP has been discussed at length. The program is largely self-selecting, so it's tough to say just how big an impact being TAP-certified actually has, versus being non-TAP with an identical GPA. That said, for those of us who are TAP certified, it's nice to know we're in a group that enjoys an acceptance rate triple that (for some majors) of regular students.

The document does include a comparison of the average admitted GPA of TAP and non-TAP applicants. Interestingly, it's identical. In the past, it has been lower for non-TAP applicants. This tells me that (as would be expected) TAP applicants, as a group, have a higher average GPA than non-TAP applicants—the TAP 4.0s pull up the average (the only other possible explanation is that TAP applicants are actually disadvantaged. This would make no sense). It would be interesting to see a comparison of TAP and non-TAP acceptance rates for applicants below 3.5.

(Sorry if this has been posted already, but I haven't seen it.)

Oh hey, I’ve been looking around for something like this for quite some time. 'tis awesome.

Gotta love that TAP certification; I’m hoping it pulls me through, haha.

@Levonid same here! I’m TAP certified and applied for Fall 2011. My GPA is in the 3.5-3.6 range and I applied under a non-impacted major, but I would feel more comfortable with my chances if I didn’t have so many missing pre-reqs :-/

But wow, 90% admit range for TAP students? That’s extremely high…though it is interesting to note that the percentage is slowly decreasing year by year (of course, competition is key here).

Great find, Nick_Scheu! Definitely helps put things in perspective.

So I decided I really want to know the answer to my <3.5 question. I just requested that information from the UCLA chancellor’s office. If they don’t respond or if they deny my request, I’ll submit a formal public records act request. Once that happens, they’re required to respond in 10 days, with the possibility of a 14 day extension. Since the UCLA school of law has released similar information in the past under PRA, I think they’ll comply.

Awesome, Nick. Thanks!

Thanks for posting this data :)

@mytime I’m in a similar situation. What exactly do you mean by “missing pre-requisites”? Are they not offered at your CCC or do you still have some in progress?

best post ive seen in awhile, thanks a lot! being tap certified, it makes me happier! thank you thank you

@ regent57 the pre-reqs I’m missing weren’t offered at my CC :(

I know UC’s won’t hold that against me but in terms of competition it hurts.

Yeah, I would assume in terms of competition from others who have taken the prereq the lack of said prereq would hurt. But of course the major itself is also a factor.
~3.5 with TAP gives you a running chance, especially if the major is non-impacted.

Third week of April can’t come fast enough.

wow, nice find. it’s good to know the extra work of doing TAP does payoff.

How much below a 3.5 are we talking about? 3.49? If you have like a 3.3 you can just forget it…

^not necessarily. Depends on the major, depends on the number of applicants this year.

Depends on what you mean by “forget it.” The overall acceptance rate for all applicants is 30%. For students with 3.3 or below, the rate might be, say, 5% (I don’t know–the chancellor’s office hasn’t responded). However, if 3.3 students with TAP have a 30% acceptance rate… It’s certainly worth doing, even though the odds are against being accepted.

Of course, if TAP only adds an extra 1 or 2 percent for students with low GPAs, it’s not worth it.

Of course it depends on your major, but a 3.3 or a 3.2 is still low for 90% of them. There are so many applicants with TAP, most of them with high GPA’s, so just having barely having completed TAP doesn’t mean anything. Obviously they can tell you took these honor courses and see that you barely got by, just because you completed it doesn’t mean anything to them.

You say that TAP applicants get in at a rate of about 75%, I guarantee that the 25th percentile of those admitted students is nowhere near a 3.2 or a 3.3. You have to take into account the mean GPA for those that apply with TAP, I would assume it to be around 3.7. TAP really mean much when you’re the minority of the TAP applicants.

Average GPA in 2010 for TAP admitted students was 3.69, you are correct. And though a 3.2/3.3 is low for a lot of majors in L&S, it is most certainly not 90% of them. Yes, a 3.2 student has less chance of being admitted; however those with 3.2’s and 3.3’s are not out of the race. Especially those who apply to majors such as Anthropology or Philosophy.

Case in point: Last year’s TAP students from my college.
3.1, Philosophy
3.2, Philosophy
3.09, Geology
3.0, Geography
3.3, Anthropology
3.2, Cognitive Science

And of course, 3.2 w/TAP is most certainly not going to make you competitive for Economics or Communications or what have you. All depends on major, all depends on major…

You can’t just say “forget it.” Maybe “less likely” or “lower chance.” Or something lol

Considering no one mentioned their majors, I’m just assuming most people here apply to impacted majors, in which case I would say a 3.2, 3.3 or even a 3.4 with TAP is a stretch.

What about TAP vs non-TAP? Who is more likeley to be admitted?

Applicant #1 TAP
Major: Psychology 3.57…completed all pre-reqs
Alt Major:Anthro…completed 2/4 pre-reqs

Applicant #2 Non-TAP
Major: Anthropology 3.39…completed all pre-reqs

What about 3.7
no tap
most prereqs done
Pre - History major

its honestly hard to say now that i think of it. ive come to realize that with ucla its so hard to chance people its sooooooooo competitive in regards to impacted majors. i feel like you should be more concerned about ur gpa when u have an impacted major like psych, poli sci, sociology, bio etc. you really need to aim for a 3.8+ and missing even one pre req will put u at a HUGE disadvantage in my opinion. but hey i might be wrong…
