Hi, I have appled for UCSB for spring term, and will likeley go there, but im starting to wonder if I want to go to UCLA. I will be a junior transfer from a california community college, IGETC certified. I currently have a 3.8125 GPA w/ 48 units completed. After this semester i should have a 3.9. I'm a communications major. So, how do my chances look? Has anyone here decided between UCSB and UCLA? Why did you pick UCLA?

I chose UCLA mainly because of academic reputation and that UCLA has more variety of things to do ranging from extracurricular activities, clubs, sports, and things to do later on. Don't get me wrong, UCSB is a good school and it will go up in the near future, but for now...UCLA is the one. I hope I won't regret my decision, but the chances of that happening are low. As a poli. sci. major and a public policy minor, I'll have so much more opportunities to work in my field and to work with famous ppl.

It also depends on what kind of atmosphere you want to live in...do you want to live in the small city or a big city? There are other questions, but i haven't experienced UCLA as of yet (since I'll start there in the fall lol).

Btw, you have a high chance of getting in. Just make sure you have a solid essay and extracurriculars, and you should (although I don't want to say it since you may get your hopes up) have a solid chance of getting in. Oh yah, did I mention that UCLA Communications is the best out of all the UCs and probably best in the nation.

thanks for the reply, now i have a lot of thinking to do

Just be aware that admission to Communications at UCLA is very tough.

According to this:

As you can see, there was a 16% admission rate and 3.87 was the average GPA, so make sure to have a good essay.

ekk that was scary to look at

Yeah, that was actually quite surprising to me too. It's even harder than economics which I always thought was the most difficult. According to Assist.org, it even requires a minimum 3.5 GPA just to apply. Good luck if you do apply.

I'm a recently accepted Comm major to LA and yeah. According to the Comm counselor at orientation, this year they accepted something like 80 out of 600 transfer applicants. But, because Comm is so impacted, the rumor is that decisions are based on grades and grades alone. Several reps told me as I was going through the process that none of my extra-curricular work in the field nor any of my honors work would even be looked at. I can't vouch for whether or not this is true, but if it is, your 3.9 will help you a lot. Everyone I spoke to at orientation and the other accepted comm major from my CC all had grades in the 3.8-3.9 range, so I'd say that the 3.87 average is pretty right on.

Also, I don't know how much you know about each program, but communications at SB is really, really different than communications at LA. Santa Barbara is almost solely focused on research in communications while at ucla its entirely theoretical (except for departmental honors courses which are optional). Also, UCLA's department is made up of classes from various fields (comm, psych, soc, philosophy, poli sci, english, etc) which offers a broader range of topics. This is all just stuff to consider when applying. I was accepted into both programs (as well as USC's and UCSD's) and I felt UCLA's was the strongest. Also, I felt I would have more internship and post-graduation opportunities in and around LA than I would anywhere else.

Good Luck :) If you have any other questions, let me know.

***Edit- Also, the consensus at orientation was that none of us put very much effort into our application essays. I wrote mine the night apps were due (overly confident perhaps in my writing skills, but whatever) and I believe several other people threw their's together pretty quickly, too. This could say something about the grades-only rumor, or we could all just be phenomenal b.s. artists with a natural propensity for banal essay writing. Prolly a little of both. Just thought I'd throw that in for analysis.

I'm a senior in high school looking to xfer into UCLA / UC Berk / UCSD (via El Camino CC) as an Econ/IntlStudies major

you go to elco? tight! um, what i meant to say was that i dont think you can use courses you took in college to fullfill hs requirements while also using it to fulfill college requirements.

ooo well i've been using it as hs credit, but not to fulfill requirements. i have like 150 more hs credits than i need to graduate already =P
