UCLA v NYU

Hey guys,
i got accepted to UCLA and NYU gls. few things to know about my dilemma...
1. NYU gls is a new program with 160 students or so. my classes will be small so i will reap the benefits of close contact with professors. UCLA does not offer such contact..
2. UCLA is a "better" school especially since the GLS program is brand new and i would be the inaugural class if i do decide to go to GLS. there is that risk of deciding to attend, and ending up in a terrible program (though it sounds amazing according to the website).
3.I plan on going into law school and NYU has a superior program to UCLA's (i'm not even sure if UCLA has a reputable law school while NYU's is ranked 5th!) and i want to be able to build close relationships with professors(since class sizes are small) so that i can have a leg up in applying to nyu law later.
4.MONEY. UCLA is no doubt, much cheaper than living in nyc attending NYU.
5. i love NYC and all my friends are going to college on the east coast, i've never been to LA and no one is going there.

considering the pros and cons of both schools, i'm having a really hard time deciding between the two...i'm still waiting for columbia but i doubt i will get in... though that would solve all my problems lol. some heartfelt suggestions/words of advice would really help!

Hello :]

Although I did not get notified of my acceptance status yet from NYU ( :frowning: i’m hoping i would get in!) I got into UCLA.

UCLA and NYU were both my dream schools, and I also do an internship at UCLA medical center as a research assistant.

If you want the small class experience, I definitely recommend NYU. My friends at UCLA have complained about large lecture class rooms. Some told me up to 500! in one lecture hall for a popular major.

As for the $$$, NYU is way more expensive even if you get decent financial aid AND scholarships, and other what nots…
But again, if you are interested in the whole small class experience, NYU would be worth the $$$.

I love Westwood, where UCLA is located in. It’s basically west LA and I think it is pretty quiet. There are lots of places you can go, such as hollywood, and rodeo drive (which is in fact very close!! from west la), santa monica, etc, etc,… And the weather here is mostly sunny ;]
As for NYC, I only visited couple of times and I liked the environment. But when i talked to New York-ers (lolz) they say it’s not as pretty and good as you think it is. and living expenses in NYC is way more expensive,
I am personally attracted to NYC because of the metro- atmosphere and the diff. weather from Cali, From what i hear, Westwood is definitely a more safe place than NYC ( + all the distractions lolz)

As for the GLS program, I haven’t heard of it :frowning: but i don’t think UCLA is very good in law related majors… (sorry :frowning: i’m not very familiar with that field…)

so, to make it short,
I value the small class experience and diverse connections i can make at college and i am leaning more towards NYU at this point. The only problem i have with nyu is $$$$…

and also if you consider dorms… NYU has much better dorms, as UC dorms generally, SUCK, lolz

sorry if i was jumping all over places, hope it helps though? :frowning:
I am still waiting for my result from NYU, and i hope to go there ;]

UCLA>NYU. The only good thing I see about NYU is maybe Stern and Tisch. If you’re going to NYU for law, you might as well go someone else. Personally, I think UCLA can offer you more. You know not everyone at NYU succeeds. At UCLA, if you’re at the top of your game, then you will see people recruiting you and such. Trust me. Also, if you’re family does not have the financial means to support your NYU tuition, UCLA’s a much better option. A lot of my friends who went to NYU and plan to do so come from a fairly strong financial background. Living in NY is more costly than living in Westwood, I’d say.

I would disagree with yummymango, Law is arguably one of new york university’s best majors in the undergraduate and graduate level. Just check on US News, it is number 5.

UCLA was higher up in my list than NYU by 1 rank. But since I got rejected from UCLA, it’s NYU for me. :)

it depends wehre you hope to develop your practice in the future.
east coast or west coast?
the connections you get in college will vary strongly depending on which school you attend.
I beleive NYU will help a lot more, i mean, it’s nyc baby!

I just realized my spelling errors… =P

NYU has a lot of good academic programs (not just Tisch/Stern). Our Philosphy, Math, Economics, International Relations, and Journalism programs are all ranked very highly and really distinguish CAS. As for GLS, well its unique, but brand new. No one here knows much about it; it’s such a vague major which seems like 5 other majors smushed together, which doesn’t make sense to me since you can just take all those classes in CAS anyway. But of course it’s another way for NYU to make more money, their ultimate goal.

My advice is go to UCLA. Here’s why - going to NYU Undergrad doesn’t boost your chances for NYU Law School. The Law School is completely different from Undergrad so you’re not going to be meeting any law profs if that’s what you were implying. If I were you, I would be looking for save money, since top Law schools like NYU Law are expensive. And since UCLA is cheaper, it sounds like a good idea. Plus you get to experience 2 different environments.

By the way, NYC is not dangerous, it’s one of the safest large cities in America…and Greenwich Village is definitely safe. Still, I reccommend you go to UCLA, it seems to make more sense to me. good luck.

I would say UCLA. I go to NYU and while I love it here, it is definitely not for everybody and probably not the best in your case. Consider everything about your situation and what you want to do later on. NYU Law doesn’t pick from NYU undergrads first when it comes to admission so it’s not as if coming from NYU will inherently give you some advantage.

It will be hard to believe, but the environment isn’t everything. Yes, New York City is in the Village. But so many people I know who have never been to the city have been disappointed that while they live in the Village, they still go to college. You can definitely balance your social and academic lives but it’s not easy, and it’s not easy to let go of common preconceptions about what NYC is like.

and about how great the program sounds… that’s kind of the point of providing descriptions for programs lol, to entice people. I know people in LSP who would not like to spend 4 years taking those kinds of courses. They’re trying to get out of their as soon as possible and transfer into CAS. But if that’s your thing… look into it more with some of NYU’s reps for that program.

girl you can forget nyu and imma private message you my address so you can mail me your 200 grand cuz im bout to LAY SOME EDUCATION ON YA.

LISTEN HERE CUZ I WILL NOT REPEAT MYSELF…

nyu law takes like 2 nyu undergrads per year and girl i aint playing with you! it is a well known fact that going to nyu undergrad puts you at a disadvantage b/c they want to expand their alumni base for donations.

I aint read a dang lick about this “new nyu program” but i will tell you point blank that UNLESS YOU APPLIED for it specifically, then it is obvioiusly some way of accepting more students and getting more tuition money, while you are your “select company” don’t bring down the acceptance statistics for SATs and GPA or fill up their freshman housing. if they make you study abroad, they obviously want to fill up their housing abroad. THAT SAID, I hear NYU study abroad is THE REAL DEAL, and that them have some mansions all over the world (which is probably why they need to fill them up with yo behind! mansions aint cheap!), SOOO being forced to study abroad is not a bad thing, but if some counselor tells you it’s for your cultural enrichment and not their bottom line, then girl what you do is give that ho the side eye!

UCLA???/ girl what about berkeley? UCLA is a fraud…what good is living in LA and the beach when you aint got public transportation to get there? Also, UCLA is a fratty diploma factory. Berkeley give syou a little more culture while still being cheap.
