UCONN Class of 2023

@heyhowareYou2019 I think your question is a fair one. We are CT residents, and at least in our perspective, we feel that UCONN is one of the top education values in the northeast among state schools. I think of UCONN above Umass (so does US News), way above UMaine/UNH/URI/UVM. Binghamton is arguably a tougher school to get into for NY, but one can argue that UConn is a more well rounded school (campus, facilities, sports, college experience).

As CT residents, we’ve all known our entire lives how hard it is to get into UCONN for CT residents because of the tremendous value for the money.

As for out of state residents, I would think kids looking to:
A) Get out of their state, yet go to a great school
B) Want the larger school feel, without the enormous school feel
C) Perhaps they are into Agriculture, Nursing, or many other programs UConn leads in
D) They may like a “country” feel, as Storrs CT is in the middle of farm land and rural area.
E) Big college basketball fans

Unlike schools like UNC, where people want to go there for the weather and the beautiful campuses, I think UConn is more likely to get merit money. UNC only allows about 7-10% in from out of state and standards are super high. UConn is 40% out of state or so.

so what are the actual chances it will be posted tonight? Cause I’ve noticed they do it the last Wednesday of February

@Madison145 i’d say a pretty solid chance of it coming out tonight

no mail today, maybe tmr, but probably friday

Thank you so
Much @nededen ! UConn is my #1 school and have been waiting months now for this!

@hankct my son got into Binghamton. Do you feel in your experience it is an equivalent school.

All. We visited Fairfield and U Conn. definitely two different feels and we loved both. Fairfield gave a nice merit and honors college. We are still waiting on U conn. But how would everyone compare the two for engg and overall experience. Would love any opinions.

Last year some applicants got notified on 2/27 (today) at 7/8pm est but most got notified on 2/28 at 7/8pm est.

So don’t be discouraged if you dont get yours tonight.

the website says “admissions decision notification begins march 1.” do people know something about it being released earlier that i dont?

Let’s hope it comes out tonight! But, just saying I called yesterday and they told me that it’s coming out March 1st. Let’s hope the lady is wrong lol

@HSinLI , congratulations to your student! We also visited Fairfield and UConn and I agree…very very different schools beyond the obvious (size). Our son (OOS) got a $17k Loyola Scholarship (renewable annually). He didn’t apply to the Honors College (not sure if it’s invite only like UVM or you apply), but in any case neither applied. He really liked the look and feel of the Fairfield but at the end he was drawn to bigger schools like UConn. A big note of difference, curriculum- wise is that Fairfield seems much more LAC-like. For example, foreign language at the intermediate level is required to be taken at the university unless Engineering major (which he’s interested in) and philosophy/theology courses are mandated (not surprising given it’s a Jesuit school). I find that the large public schools (like UConn) do not require foreign language, at least for B.S. degrees. At UConn, as long as you took 3 years of the same language in high school, foreign language in college is not required. For my son, that was a big deal. He did not want to continue foreign language classes and he only took 3 years. For some kids, the smaller community feel really fits them while for others, a large bustling one does. I think our son falls in the latter camp. Also, UConn is much more diverse which is a big plus for us. Good luck!

NJ here, no snail mail envelope. No portal chancges, no underlined blue dot in Fin Aid to click on nor is the “Enroll or Edit Direct Deposit Information” an active link.

Good luck all !

@mackinac UConn made an instagram post yesterday with the Husky mascot holding an acceptance package, standing at the back of an open USPS truck loaded with bins full of acceptance packages, implying packages were being mailed yesterday.

Looking at last year’s thread, decisions were posted on the portal on Wed, Feb 28th. So, some have speculated portal will be updated on Wed, some say Thurs.

@HSinLI Congrats on Fairfield, UConn and Binghamton

I grew up in Fairfield and now live a few miles from there, so I have seen the good, bad and ugly. My kids went to summer camp there as well (eMagination). In my eyes, Fairfield isn’t in the same stratosphere as UConn or Binghamton. Niche grades the latter both an A, and you tend to need higher scores and grades to get into them. Niche gives Fairfield an A-. Might be a bit of a reach, but kudos to them for their improvements.

What I will say about Fairfield, is that it tends to be loaded with lots of kids from wealthy families. Seeing FFLD U students driving around in new Audis and BMWs is fairly common, wearing expensive clothes and eating out at tapas restaurants drinking fancy wine. A lot of wealthy families from NJ, NY and CT, who had kids that found the beach party town life appealing. From what I have seen, beach/social/parties are the top thing there. They do have good programs in select majors (like finance, accounting, business, nursing), but probably drop off quite a bit after their core majors.

As far as Uconn vs Binghamton, feels like it’s hard to go wrong. UConn is a name known nationally. If your kid plans to travel to Denver for a job, UConn on the resume might go further. UConn also has a broad range of solid majors, liberals arts to nursing to science. They have larger facilities. The D1 sports programs. One of the reasons we like it so much is that we feel no matter what DD decides to do, she can change majors and it will still be quality, whatever it is.

Binghamton strikes me a school with more science/engineering lean, very well known in the Northeast for it’s rigor and tough acceptance standards. They want to become THE university of the state of NY. The campus of Binghamton is more of a place where they have different dorm areas with different themes, where as Uconn is more industrial in that sense. But overall, I think they are both “A” level schools, and it comes down to the majors and the fit for your child.

Will add: Rankings are rankings, and they vary of course. Forbes, for example, ranks Bing, Uconn and Fairfield closely together in the 140-160 range. While Money ranks Bing as 26, Uconn as 50, and Fairfield as 160.

@RJA great write up. We feel the exact same way. We are looking into the alumni network now. Fairfield has a relatively strong network. Not sure about U Conn. I agree on diversity, it is important to us and Fairfield isn’t as diverse. Let’s all hope U Conn comes thru.

@HankCT it’s great to get the perspective of someone who grew up in the area and knows the school. I think my son is just nervous that he won’t get into U conn and has Fairfield as a backup. I definitely agree about the overall experience at U Conn. we haven’t visited Binghamton yet since it is a bit further than he wants to go but that might be an option, check out the campus etc. I heard Bing is mostly kids from Long Island, not necessarily a bad thing but he wants to meet kids from everywhere.

@HSinLI my daughter went to Fairfield for her Freshman year. Extremely generous merit package and she was happy academically, but there were several things about campus life that she really disliked. She transferred to UMass Amherst for Sophomore year and is much happier. If there is a message function on here to talk privately I would be glad to share what my daughter did and did not like about Fairfield.
