UCR CNAS

Okay, so I’m actually asking this question for my girlfriend.

She attends UCR and she tells me that she can only get into CNAS if she takes Chem 1A and 1B by her freshman year. Is this true? Because she’s taking Chem 1B right now (the end of her freshman year) and she is having a tough time. Is it true if she has to drop it she will have to change her major?

If so that seems a little ridiculous to me considering community college students can take their chemistry courses at their own pace and easily transfer into CNAS?

Which major and college is your girlfriend in presently at UCR? Is she a Freshman/Sophomore/Junior? I am assuming she is trying to switch majors into CNAS?

@Gumbymom She’s an undeclared science major. She’s a freshman going into her sophomore year this Fall.

Which major is she trying to declare in CNAS?

@Gumbymom Is it different per major in CNAS because she is pretty adamant in the idea that if she does not complete Chemistry in the Summer she will not be able to get into any CNAS major no amtter what

Yes, I know it is different for each major but depending upon how many units she has completed, there are more pre-req’s that are required to declare. Based on what is posted for several of the CNAS majors, to declare or switch into these majors, both Chem courses need to be passed with a C- or higher, however; it does not state it has to be accomplished by end of Freshman year. She just needs to pass these courses before declaring. If she has any questions, she should consult with a CNAS advisor since on the website I see no time line required to declare as long as you pass the pre-req’s. Another option would have been to take the courses at a CC as long as they are transferable.

@Gumbymom Sorry, I guess I explained it wrong, I guess she’s already in CNAS as an undeclared science major and she thinks if she drops Chem 1B she’ll get kicked out. Is there still no timeline in that case? Thanks for all your help by the way.

If Chem 1B is a pre-req for other classes she needs to continue with her major classes, it may delay her eventual graduation but I cannot see any other repercussions. She should check with an advisor before making any decision anyways but why would she be kicked out? Is she on academic probation?

You need to complete CHEM 1A, 1B, 1C and BIO 5A, 5B by the time you have Junior level standing. If not, you cannot continue with any biology/chemistry majors due to it taking too long for you to graduate. I was a Microbiology major for reference. Each major has a minimum progress criteria. For example, here is Biology http://cnasstudent.ucr.edu/majors/biology.html Click on the PDF link that shows the minimum progress criteria.
