UCSB Admission - Class of 2022

My daughter chose UCSB out of all the options she has (exact same options as your son, other than Cal). When we did the whole college tour thing last year spring break, she fell in love with SB and she has seen herself there since then. It was a year ago this week. She is a Pre-Bio major taking the pre-med track. We are going back up to see it once more next week (we live near SD) just to make sure, and if she is, then we will be back up there on 4/14 for admitted students day. We toured UCSD and she knew within minutes that it was not for her. Good luck!

People including myself make common mistake of opting for the best names instead of best education and prospects for the specific major interested in. My son chose to major in Econ and I was so surprised how high UCSB was ranked for that major. It was ranked #12 in the nation while UCB #30, UCLA#24 and all the other UCā€™s fall way way behind. So, we are choosing UCSB. I checked the ranking for Chem Engin major for Manadoā€™s kid and I find UCB #25 to be the highest among all UCā€™s as shown in the link below. You can check all other majors as well. Each college has strength and weaknesses. I just learned that best names do not necessarily offer the best education for a specific major. I hope this helps in your decision as it did for my kid.

Teachmama2, thank you for your response. I absolutely agree with your daughter. Follow what you believe is good for you and do your part. Your insight is appreciated.

Parentworry, thanks for the link. It helps us in our decision making. Youā€™re definitely right. Best name may not be a good match. Iā€™m happy your son has made up his decision and good luck to him.

He is leaning slightly toward Berkeley at the moment

Does anyone know if all the freshman dorms are triple occupancy? And also just like whatā€™s better between gaucho bucks vs a meal plan?

ucplsacceptme, my daughter is a freshman at UCSB. She has 2 other roomates in the dorm. She has meal plan and it works pretty good with her.

Has anyone committed to UCSB? Iā€™m having such a hard time choosing from UCR (sociology-alt major which is why iā€™m unsure, estimated 26k financial aid), CSUF (psychology- Havenā€™t heard anything from financial aid), and UCSB (pre psycholigcal and Brain Sciences- older sister goes here, nice campus, estimated 25-26k financial aid). Any insight will help

Has anyone found out about EOP?

@am013384 I think you would be able to change into your preferred major eventually at UCR if you really want/need to stay in the LA area. You should look closely at CSUF portal for financial aid. Cal states arenā€™t as generous as UC with aid. Unless you have seen something you really donā€™t like about SB, I think you may regret not attending. Be sure to attend the 4/14 open house and good luck with your decision!

Hey there, Iā€™m a graduating senior of UCSB, if anyone has any questions feel free to message me or ask here

Hello! Iā€™ve been admitted as UCSB class of 2022 for Physics in college of letters&sciences. Iā€™m basically torn between UCSB as a physics major (L&S honors) or NYU for communications. Both are really great schools and I think it really comes down to what kind of career/major I am more interested in. It would be really helpful if you could tell be about the opportunities for physics majors for UCSB and the type of career path most graduates follow!

I am currently waiting for my financial aide estimate from UCSB. It says it arrived on March 22 but when I click on ā€˜Financial Aidā€™, it says, ā€œNo Financial Aid estimation available at this time.ā€ Is anyone else receiving this? As of now, I plan on attending UCSD because I was awarded the Regents Scholarship which pays for all of my expenses next year, but Iā€™d like to keep my options open until I have all the information.

Is there a groupme or a discord for newly admitted students?

@Handwasher what do you think about the FSSP? Also, San Nicolas dorm vs. Anacapa? Thanks!

How easy is it to switch majors within ccs? to engineering?

@JessicaF Our son did FSSP and it got him off to a great start. Heā€™s still friends and roommates with people he met that summer. Itā€™s the best summer program of the UCs because of the variety of classes you can take. That can help ease your schedule later on. Getting familiar with the school and finding your way around before the mad rush in the fall will help. I highly recommend it if itā€™s affordable to you. His only regret was that they didnā€™t go to the beach more often. I assume San Nicolas is still the FSSP dorm, but not 100% sure.

UCSB has good physics and communications programs not so sure about NYUā€™s physics. I believe ucsb is behind Berkeley in the uc system as a physics department. However just sayin as someone who has been through it, if youā€™re coming for physics you should know the basics well cuz the intro courses are fast, its a backwards method the whole department uses where u teach yourself. The physics department is heavily invested in here and the grad students have their own living spaces! that bein said, i think you should go to the school with more major options if u dont know what u wanna do yet.

@thekimchiyuja For Physics major, UCSB is ranked #17 and NUY #44 in the nation. See the link below and decide for yourself. https://www.collegefactual.com/majors/physical-sciences/physics/rankings/top-ranked/p5.html

@JessicaF Anacapa is nicer than San Nic.
