i got into the elc thing (top 9% thing) and i was wondering if uc’s know students were picked for that or did we have to put that in our application?
@CopperlineX2 Thanks. How did you log into MyAid Status? It calls for a UCSB Net ID and a password…
@YoungOne4 You’re right, the UCI portal is the one where you can log into financial aid page. UCSB just has check my aid status link at top
@tanmc: ELC will be shown on your UC application if you are ELC for your HS. It only guarantees a spot at UC Merced if not accepted at your choice UC’s.
@tanmc if you are ELC, then yes, it is noted on what the reviewers see. ELC is one of the 14 criteria that UC uses to evaluate applications. Not sure how big a boost it is, but it does help some since you are evaluated relative to others who attend your school. Not sure if even Merced is accepting ELC students anymore. http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/freshman-admission-matrix.pdf
Is it easier to get into UCSB or UC Davis?
@caligirl1999: For which major? Each UC reviews their applicants based on their own criteria. Hard to say but no way to predict. Here is information on how each school reviews applicants.
- Davis
- Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores
- Important: Character/personal qualities, Extracurricular activities, Talent/ability, Volunteer work
- Considered: First generation college student, Geographical residence, State residency, Work experience
Note: Scholastic achievement most important, followed by school and community activities, academic interests, special circumstances, special achievements and awards
- Santa Barbara
Very important: Academic GPA, Application essay, Rigor of secondary school record, Standardized test scores
Considered: Character/personal qualities, Class rank, Extracurricular activities, First generation college student, Level of applicant's interest, State residency, Talent/ability, Volunteer work, Work experience
Note: Eligibility established by high school GPA, course requirement, and SAT scores. Special consideration for disadvantaged students.
@Gumbymom would you say UCSB or UC Davis is easier for biological sciences? Just got waitlisted at UC Davis and now I’m afraid I won’t get into UCSB (top choice)
Here are my stats:
UC gpa: 4.12
SAT: 1390
Essays: good
Ec: 300+ volunteer hours
@caligirl1999: I know Biology is heavily impacted at UCD and they admit directly into the College of Biological Sciences.
At UCSB, Biology is also impacted but Biology is found in the College of Letters and Sciences which does not admit by major. UCSB also seems to emphasize community service so your volunteer hours will help.
I think you have a good chance at UCSB so please update me when you hear. Where else did you apply and have you received any acceptances yet?
Best of luck.
@Gumbymom that makes me feel a lot better! I have applied to SDSU, SLO, UCD, UCR, UCSB, UCI, UCLA, and UCSD. So far I’ve been accepted to SDSU and UCR but UCSB is definitely my top choice so fingers crossed for that. Thanks so much for the support!
I am also Bio major and applied UC Davis and I just got rejected…Feel crappy right now since really like the UCD medical pathway though…
My GPA is low since I had depression sophomore year but I fought hard and my grade has a upward trend. UC GPA little less than 3.9, SAT 1420. SAT 2: Physics 700, math 2 760, Chemistry 740. 9 APs from grade 10-12. Really want to know my chance at UCSB. Do I have a shot?
The gpa is out of 5 correct?
I also got waitlisted at UC Davis (3.79, 1450 SAT) for applied math… I applied in CoL&S at UCSB and it is my #1 choice so I am just praying I somehow get in but I doubt it seeing the waitlist. I was banking on my essays and extenuating circumstances to aid my low GPA.
Hey there everyone, I have applied to UCSB, for the Computer Science major (and wasn’t knowledgeable to put an alternate major so all eggs in one basket here) , now of course i’m sure website like these get about 1.8 trillion requests from people wanting to be “chanced” so hopefully one more isn’t too much to ask
Anyways, here are my stats:
SAT: 1400 (700 each category)
Essays: 6,5,6 (not that good but does it count much?)
SAT Math 2: Actually didn’t take it, and I’m kind of freaking out a bit cause after going through all 51 pages of UCSB’s last year forum, and this year’s forum lots of people have it. Was it required? I know it was recommended, but was it a full on requirement? If so, please kindly tell me in a light manner, as it shall be then obvious that any hope of getting into UCSB is all lost
GPA: applied with a 3.95 UW
UC GPA: Calculators tell me its 4.05
Weighted: Something around 4.2 - 4.3
Class Rank: lucky number 7 out of 700 (really out of 693)
AP and Honor Classes total: 8 (that i applied with) + 4 more this year I don’t know if those count as well
Other things I hear school’s like UC consider:
- Income Bracket: $30k to $50k, school considered "underrepresented and low socioeconomically"
- Male Minority
- Parent is retired U.S. Navy
- Fortunate enough to get chosen for Boy's State as a delegate
ECAs:
- 2 years of Orchestra, first violin and first viola chair, as well as President both years (class got cut though, I added that in)
- 4 years of MCJROTC, at the time of applying I was second in command of my whole company, known as the Executive Officer I added in all the awards I've gotten with that
- 1 year of Jazz Band and Trumpet Choir
- 3 years of Academic League (Varsity all 3 years), Vice President for last two years, and I also added in the awards I've gotten with that
- 1 year in student council
AP Classes:
AP Physics: a dismal 2, but I was a sophomore taking my shot, did well in the class though xD
AP Comp Sci A: 3 (well then )
AP Calc AB: 3
AP World History: 4
AP English Language: 4
AP US History: 4
AP Environmental Science: 4
Other little things to consider:
- I'm currently in AP Calc B/C
- I've furthered my coding experience, and one of my essays was about that
- My essays were pretty decent from my POV, and surely highlighted every aspect of what I do from my music playing to my times in JROTC to my coding endeavors
- I have 200+ community service hours, mostly in one area, but also some hours in other places as well which I have noted
That’s really everything? I know this was quite the read, but I’d appreciate any feed back on all this. Again yes I know chances are just chances, but as the days are winding down it’d be a bit nice for me to see a different point of view from other people. Thank you very much in advance, and I am wishing everyone luck and a nice night.

Rejected by UCD, but Idk how my chances at UCSB fare. W GPA with Cap is about a 3.8, uncapped it is a 4.05. ACT is 33 and I applied with Philosophy. I have a lot of ECs but I dont feel like elaborating on them here.
was just waitlisted at UCD SAT: 1220 and GPA: 4.1 W with 8 AP courses (I have a feeling good essays help a lot)
Does anyone have an idea when UCSB decisions might come out?
They come out march 20th!
@tanmc they come out March 20th
@doodlebop06 @winter04 thanks!
