UCSB Waitlist (Class of 2021)

Rajag87 and chookgoo goin at it like they Russell and Chaimberlain

People can be justified to be upset if they (or their child) did not get into a UC due to OOS or Affirmative Action applicants.
However, this frustration should not be taken out on those applicants. Take it to the UC admissions office (perhaps through your congress person). It is not the fault of those Black/Hispanic/Mixed-race applicants that they were accepted to a UC. They applied just like everyone else.
If the UC admissions office did not consider my application better than theirs then I should take it up with the UC office and not blame the applicants.

Portal update - No change for me. Still Decision Pending.

@ chookgoo, I could have written that myself. My son took 9 AP classes, plus 9 honors level classes, played 3 sports, MUN, job, etc. etc. Like your D, he was accepted to (and had to decide between) SDSU and UCSC. (Waitlisted at UCI, UCSB and a private LAC; rejected by UCLA, UCB, and UCSD). He appealed his waitlists, as he discovered that he had neglected to mark his honors classes as honors on his original application. He has heard back from UCSB that the Class of 2017 is full, so that’s another “no” for him. He’s still waiting to hear from UCI and the LAC.

Meanwhile, he’s been watching his friends with lower GPAs & test scores (and 1-2 AP classes) get accepted. It’s been brutal. If you would have told me 4 years ago my son would be choosing between SDSU and UCSC, I would have laughed. He has SIRed to UCSC, but he’s definitely disappointed in the outcome of this college application process.

Best of luck to all of you! If UCSC doesn’t make him happy, maybe he’ll see you via transfer junior year!

@CABoyMom - You mentioned “He has heard back from UCSB that the Class of 2017 is full, so that’s another “no” for him.”
Can you tell us WHEN he got this message from UCSB?

when did he hear that?

is it full?

Does that mean nobody else is getting off the waitlist?

My daughter is also on the waitlist. I just called. The waitlist decisions will keep coming until end of June. Do not lose hope. Best luck to all.

CABoyMom just sliding in that bit of info about UCSB being full then dips without explaining

@CABoyMom: in some strange way, that it’s comforting to hear that I’m not the only one with this issue, but I don’t expect my opinion or story to be well received by many. Your son’s classes, activities, and the score cards from UCs are almost exactly like my D’s and it’s almost surreal…

Anyway, still no updates on waitlist status. Not sure my D will even go to UCSB even if they end up accepting her. I guess I was hoping for some sort of energy boost or confidence builder for my D, knowing that her effort in high school was not all overlooked by most UCs…

@CABoyMom: may be your son and my D will be just fine no matter what but as parents, we need to make sure that there was nothing wrong with them from being rejected by some of these schools especially since they gave all and then some. At least my D didn’t put down undeclared major just to get into a school. She went for a major that she really wanted to study and it didn’t work out. I commanded her for that and time to recoup and move on.

He received a letter in the mail on Sat, dated May 8, that states, “We regret that we are unable to offer you admission at this time as we have reached our enrollment limit for Fall 2017”. That is verbatim.

@Kale69: Thank you for the info but that’s just too bad, keep applicants and families waiting and waiting through summer, when most schools gearing up for orientation, room/board assignments and stuff. Will UCSB or other UCs provide necessary services and opportunities for the waitlisted forlks or are they on their own? Very frustrating…

@CABoyMom: That was exactly a week ago and it was a snail mail not email so they made a decision even before that… We are in So Cal Orange County and didn’t receive anything in mail but I’ll check when I get home tonight…

We have not received anything in the mail yet. The website message says pending decision. Did his status change on the UCSB website?
I was wondering that there will be more students opting out of UCSB if they get in UCB, UCLA etc. UCI will finalize waitlist decisions according to the website by end of May.
So keeping fingers crossed and being hopeful.

Yes, his status was updated on the website. Best of luck to all of you! Maybe theyre just waiting for the last of the spots to develop so they send out the proper number of acceptances.

I am sure they will be providing all the services opportunities to waitlist kids. The only downside is they may not have lot of options to choose dorms, roommates etc. Hopefully they can find reasonable options.

Wouldn’t everyone on the waitlist have received that notification if UCSB’s spots are actually all full?

@str4wberry No, since there’s still the waitlist and appeal factor. Just like what the rest of this conversation details, they’re waiting on who accepts, who declines, who ends up dropping their SIR for another school, who SIRs to another school. It’s been said a number of times, but at this point-- it’s just a waiting and numbers game. After every wave of new admissions, the school has to adjust their numbers and recalculate the number of spots open. We just gotta wait and hope we’re not too disappointed with the results.

maybe that means we all will get in lmao

i hate how we’re all here just stuck here waiting when everyone else is all excited because they already know where they’re going…kinda sucks. this is such a drag. i hope decisions are posted soon so i can at least know the real answer instead of waiting around nervous af
