UCSB Waitlist (Class of 2021)

Is anyone’s portal down? My status page is unavailable right now.

Yeah mine is also unavailable.

Mine is down also. Perhaps they are updating it. Fingers crossed.

Mine is too, but does that mean that they’re updating?

I hope I get in because when I visit the campus there are hardly any Black people there

@JJordan1121 - Not sure what your point is about black people, or lack thereof, at UCSB. Are you saying it is a good thing or bad?
Colleges should have student body with diversity of opinion and life experiences. It enriches everyone.
However, diversity for the sake of diversity serves nobody.

It seems like the website (portal) is down because they are doing some testings and stuff for their SAASB. “This includes, but is not limited to: GOLD, MyCLAS, eGrades, DSP online services, and other Student Affairs and Graduate Division websites.” So I don’t think it’s related to admission offers, or maybe who knows?

This all feels like some kind’ve test of faith…ahhh i hate waiting

It’s a bad thing because although it’s supposed to be filled with diversity it isn’t whites,Asians and Hispanics are at a higher percentage of UCSB whereas blacks are only at 2 or 3%

The portal is back up but there is no change in the status (at least for me).

@JJordan1121 - Quotas are against the law. Maybe UCSB does not get enough good black applicants. I doubt they will go out of their way to keep blacks out.

Yes they are but that doesn’t stop it from happening that like me saying that banning marijuana will keep people from using it, just because there is a law that doesn’t mean that their selection process wouldn’t lead towards a certain racial group and trust me I know from experience, I work just as hard as the next guy and at the end of the day it will be a harder struggle for me because of my race.

@JJordan1121 - I agree with your point that we live in an imperfect society. However, I also believe that a hard working person will eventually succeed in life no matter where he/she goes to college. This admission cycle has been brutal for me just like everyone else here, but on the positive side I have come to fully experience the disappointment of rejections at this scale and have vowed to not let myself go through this kind of trauma again.
Wherever I end up going, I will work my ass off and eventually go to a highly reputed graduate school (maybe even to one of those universities who have rejected me this year). Next time I want them to fall over each other to offer me a spot rather than me waiting like this for a scrap of good news from somewhere, anywhere.

Yes I agree with you about the hard work, but even with my hard work I still have to deal with rejections, not because I’m not good enough or I’m not working hard enough, but merely because of my ethnicity whites and Asians are the highest amount of students at the school and then blacks and Native Americans are at the lowest. I’m a blend of both Black and Seminole/Blackfoot Native American so the odds are stacked up against me. I understand what you’re saying completely, but until you have a firsthand experience of how race ultimately affects everything then you won’t understand, this system is designed for me to fail and for you to succeed and I know you probably don’t understand that, but if you could have a day in my shoes then you would.

I thought this thread was about the class of 2021 ucsb waitlist lol

It is I’m just replying to someone’s statement.

when are decisions coming out. they said mid may. and I’m sitting here with no decision

@JJordan1121 I don’t think its fair based on your argument to assume that the UC system favors specific races over others in regards to accepting students. Yes, there is a relatively low percentage of Blacks and Native American Students across all the UC schools but that is reflective of the number of applications they get from these ethnicities/races. In 2016, there was a COMBINED 10,234 students who identified themselves as African American or American Indians that applied, compared to the number of Asian(42,286), White(40,306), and Chicano/Latino(41,293) ALONE. To give you an idea, African Americans and American Indians make up only 6% of the entire applicant pool( which also includes international and “unknown” students). Looking at it this way, it’s not crazy to see that the percentages are low for these groups. Even if the UC’s were to accept every applicant that applied and identified as the two ethnicities/races above, the percentage would still be low. If they accept a higher percentage of these students for diversity purposes, wouldn’t it be unfair to students of other races as well? I am also frustrated with my results. I was rejected from all the UC’s I applied to except Santa Cruz with a 4.25 UC GPA and a 1430 new(2040 old) sat. Ultimately, I believe it’s because I am an asian student who goes to a very competitive high school that is primarily white and asian. I believe that being asian does not help me, but rather hurts me in the application process as I feel like I was being compared to people of my race who were also very qualified. Also, I have noticed a few African Americans in my school have been accepted to better schools than I have with considerable lower stats (my friend being one of them). With any applicant admitted into the UC system, there has to be something compelling or special about him/her that the schools liked. Still, I feel like it was unfair that I was rejected to all these schools. If anything, I believe that if I identified as another race, I would have had a higher chance of getting into a better school. I do agree however, that there are several big flaws in the review process that need to be addressed. I apologize if I said anything offensive, as it was unintentional. I wish you good luck in the future

WHO CARES. STOP ARGUING

Uh guys as much as I think it’s important to have these debates to move forward as humanity and stuff, if we could not do it on this chat, that would be great
