Yes. My D’s shows the same. That is because the appeal deadline is April 15 and no longer available after that.
Any thoughts on how this information from today’s video with UC President Janet Napolitano will impact UCSB waitlist students this year? I’m worried if they try to spread students out and not put too many in each dorm room for social distancing – or if they have all virtual learning for the fall term, I wonder what that will do to waitlist acceptances?
All the UCs are very budget conscious. They NEED revenue. Their budgets are based upon projections of students. If they do not hit their enrollment goal, they will really be short. So I don’t think lack of dorm space will factor into their enrollment numbers or impact waitlists. If anything, they will kick out upper division students for freshman.
There are, however, bigger budget concerns. A drop in out-of-state and foreign student enrollment could be huge because the UCs rely on those extra dollars. Drop in profit from housing as a result of spreading out will be significant. What has not been discussed at this time is a hike in tuition. I’m not trying to scare anyone, but the UCs all took a huge hit this year and are looking at similar next year. All the UCs, but probably UCLA and Berkeley more, will really be hurt if they lose their revenues from athletics. The UCs were already discussing raising tuition before coronavirus. I think the UCs are a great bargain now and even with a tuition hike, they will still be a great bargain but a tuition hike has to at least be in the potential discussion right now.
@Bruin92 - I worry abt the same with private’s as well. My D was accepted to Tulane with merit but it was still going to be a stretch. Hard to make that stretch especially now with future tuition increases unpredictable based on covid-19 lost revenue.
Looks like someone on Reddit just got off of the waitlist this morning - International/no financial aid
I got off of the UCSB waitlist yesterday and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas why waitlist decisions are coming out so early?
@Hazeliza Are you international, in-state, or OOS?
@heavyduty445 I’m OOS
@Hazeliza I think some people have said that because of corona, many OOS and international people are unable/don’t want to go to schools that are far away/expensive in order to save money and play it safe. Therefore, the UC’s might be pulling more people off the waitlists earlier in order to meet those quotas. Congrats!
Congratulations @Hazeliza ! I think they’ll try to get their yield up for OOS/International before the May 1 SIR or shortly after and then start looking at anything in-state. In other words, I feel like we in-state waitlisters shouldn’t expect to hear back until after May 1. Either way we’ll know soon enough!
@Hazeliza I think this video interview of UC President Janet Napolitano would be helpful in answering your question. The bottom line is that all UCs must be particularly concerned with their budget, especially in light of the economic crisis associated with coronavirus. International and OOS full-pay enrollments are most desirable to the budget of each UC school before in-state waitlist students are approached (more likely after May 1).
Does anyone know if appeals are looked at before/after waitlists or if the process is usually done simultaneously?
@homosapiens Appeal for some colleges are due May 1st and decision by June 1st so I would assume they are in parallel.
My daughter just got in for the theatre program this morning! Anyone else get news??
@COmama24 congrats!! Are you in-state or out-of-state applicant? That’s great to see things are starting to move!
@WCWSM52 We are out of state…she fell in love with it when we visited over a year ago.
@COmama24 That’s so great! Congrats again
@COmama24 big congrats to your daughter! any idea what her stats were like? (i.e. act/sat, gpa, extracurriculars, ap’s)
@elise5 Thank you! EC’s…many theatre roles in and outside of school, lead singer of a rock band, black belt karate, leadership positions, volunteer positions, NHS, Tri M, Thespian Society, Letter in academics, theatre and band. Other awards, etc…our school doesn’t weight honors. She had about 13 of those. She took 4 AP classes. About 4.1, so would have been much higher if weighted. 28 ACT.
How many of you appealed the waitlist decisions? I’m curious to see if appeals have a better shot this year compared to other years or if nothing really changes. Also, does anyone know if appealing on the waitlist increases the chance of a successful appeal compared to appealing rejection?
