My CC counselor keeps telling me UCSD DGAF about your major. They mainly focus on your GPA. HOW can that even work?! If someone with a 3.3 in Political Science is accepted and a person with a 3.3 in Biology gets rejected...then obviously major has something to do with it. So uhm what do you guys think.

Always take an advice from CC Counselors with a grain of salt

Major obviously matters for Bio, which is impacted. Maybe not so much for the others?

UCSD DOES care about your major. Biology is actually one of the majors that are impacted. Even if you get in through TAG, there’s no guarantee Biology will actually be your major unless they say so. Major definitely matters, as does GPA.

Thanks guys. You all know more than my darn CC counselor.

My advice would be to talk to more than one counselor…You’ll be able to tell which one of them provides the best and most reliable information.

just for clarification, UCSD econ isn’t impacted, right?

Hm I dont believe it is. I know Biology is REALLY impacted but I’ve seen people get accepted to Econ with 3.3+

Bioengineering and mechanical engineering matter too.

@Strive: I checked last year’s acceptance thread for UCSD (all 114 pages lol) and found out that the range of acceptance for the econ major varied from 3.3 - 3.8. It was interesting that some people also got in without TAG. I’m speculating that since TAG this year is a 3.5, they might allow more leniency in acceptance number for people without impacted majors.

Your counselor is probably referring to TAG, which he is correct.

As long as your GPA is 3.5+ you and your TAG is accepted, you are getting in. However, it is a different story in regards to impacted majors, your chances are lower (but not by much).

Thanks Eggyham & UChopeful :)

You’re welcome! and I told my counselor I wasn’t tagging. He knew that. And I totally agreee with the leniency. With a TAG increase of 3.5, I’m pretty sure they’ll get around 4,000 tag applicants for CC transfers. Hopefully the cutoff GPA for non
Impacted majors without tag would be around 3.2 or 3.3. What do you guys think?

I’m an intercampus transfer. And I thought with the TAG increase, it’d be harder for everyone to get in. So how does it work with you guys believing the increased leniency?

Sorry for my lack of knowledge with the community college transfer crowd.

It’s fine. Well…if your major is impacted, it’s hard to get in with a GPA around 3.2-3.4. Like since they increased the TAG, a lot of people won’t be GUARANTEED admission into UCSD which pretty much leaves room for lower GPA students. Last year Ucsd was infested with tag applicants (with GPAs of nearly 3.0) when people with 3.5’s got rejected because they didnt have tag. Tag applicants took all the spots that some really good non tag applicants should have filled. I personally think it’ll be easier to transfer this year due to the tag increase. And I heard UCs are enrolling the same number of students they enrolled last year.

^ Oh, ok. That makes sense then.

Are you a bio major? Is that why you’re worrying about the level of impaction?

Nope not a Bio major. I’m a Sociology major. Just worrying about getting rejected since my GPA is a 3.3. I was scared that since TAG is 3.5 now, that they might want non tag applicants from 3.4+. But I have a feeling this 3.5 tag stuff is going to give a lot of lower GPA non impacted major students a chance.
You’re a bio major? How are things going? Stressing?

I see. Well, your thinking about the leniency due to tag makes sense, so don’t stress so much and just focus on this semester

No, I’m an econ major. Things are great, just studying like crazy to maintain my GPA this quarter. Man, I’ve been so obsessed with the idea of transfer for like a year now, I’m so sick of the subject -.-

How’s this semester for you right now?

AWW don’t worry too much! I’m like that too I have a countdown until decisions come out. I’ve been obsessing over it too. I’ve seen a tonnnn of people get in last year with 3.3 and no tag.

Ah this semester is horrible. Regret taking a couple of courses haha. Btw how do you like UCR? Are you planning on transferring for your masters or…?

@strive: Are you applying as a Math/Econ major or just regular Econ? Btw im applying to UCR too, just as a back-up so how do you like it there? How the social life and all?
