Well, if you get accepted to most of the UC’s, wouldn’t you want to get the best education for your major, instead of choosing randomly. I never mentioned number of applicants at all, I only see the strengths of the departments at each school and how people will get the most bang for your buck.

Yes, strength of department, who the faculty is, school’s ethos, the quality of teaching. And perhaps I assumed (apologies) you were speaking of quantity of applicants because that is how many of these schools are valued and therefore ranked, by the number of students turned away. Exclusivity is assumed to mean quality. Hence, many schools (and many schools where it is pretty impossible to get in) campaign to get students to apply when there is little chance of acceptance. I like this quote from Siva Vaidhyanathan and one I think all those participating on these forums who might feel dejected because they didn’t get into certain schools might want to read: “Who cares about places the NYTimes calls ‘elite?’ Texas Tech is pretty damn elite when compared to what most of the world has a chance to do and learn. This obsession with the alleged ‘top 20’ universities is poisonous. It pushes resources toward the already wealthy universities and creates harmful pressure on great state colleges and universities to emulate the stars, thus failing to adequately serve their communities.”

Page 254… The other UC pages have far fewer posts. The admissions policy has not taken into consideration the stress it has placed of the majority of the applicants. The focus is completely on the top applicants with the calls etc. many of those students may opt to go to other UCs too or to private schools as they wll probably have more choces. I feel for those with UCSD as their top choice that have not heard anything. Ive been march 30thd but accepted at another UC that is a better mach for me so Have stopped checking the portal and will wait for an email. Good luck to those still waiting!
