UCSD Fall 2018 Transfer Thread

hoping that we can get our decisions by next week so all of us can stop stressing. at least UCSB starts tomorrow!

I am p!ssEd at UCSD admissions rn, I keep checking, I just want it to come out so I can relax either in sorrow or joy I don’t care, actually I do, I want to get in, but still, I just want it to come out!

@SmartJarhead So yah, unfortunately, last year we hit a huge downfall when it came to on campus housing (especially for transfers). There was an overflow and it pushed like some non transfers (like underclassmen) into the village (which is typically for transfers and upperclassmen). They moved people to “overflow” housing which are the apartments…i want to say no more than a mile away from campus (shuttles provided to get to campus). However, the overflow people still paid normal on campus housing which includes dining dollars even though they aren’t entirely always on campus to be able to use up all the dining dollars.

if you do end up getting on campus housing, the contract does go for 2 years, so you’ll be good for that. If you take longer than 2 years, you’ll have to find housing off campus. Hope this helped!

Y’all might as well just resign yourselves to knowing by the last Friday in April. :-/ I know you’re hopeful and… lol, so were most of us last year. And the year before.

Housing is a huge issue here. It got to a point where they offered some on-campus students 4,000 to opt out of their contract and move off campus. It wasn’t really worth it imo but some took it because living in triples is no joke. But if you expect to live off campus… you’re going to be spending anywhere from 400-700 for a double (I’ve honestly never seen a single go for 700 but I’ve seen prices similar to 650ish) and 800-1200 for a single. And that might be with a shared bath. Let me know if you guys want to know suuuper specifics and I’ll try to help!

@sleepychickens Yes, as a transfer student you can still change your major. I got in as Mathematics and Applied Sciences, changed it to Material Physics, then changed again to Nanoengineering. Depending what major you want to get into will determine what you have to do. Like if the major is NOT impacted, all you have to do is go to the website and click the button.

If the major IS impacted, you will have to reapply to the major already having done all the required major classes. And it is not always guaranteed you will get into the major. If you are currently in an impacted major, and you officially changed to another major, then decide you want to go back to your previous major, you will have to reapply to the department again (once again, not guaranteed that you will get back in).

@Hikachu21 Hi, I saw on your last post that you were briefly a physics major at one point. I applied as a physics major and I wanted to know if you would be able to share your opinions about the department and overall experience? Thanks in advance!

@Cygnyss I absolutely loved the physics department. Physics was my main back up if I didn’t get into engineering, so I was really invested in the department to get things set after changing majors. Toni, the academic advisor, was the most helpful advisor I had at UCSD. She was just full of detail in her responses, and actually helped me figure out what route I should take (while I was a physics major). Oh, and quantum mechanics was the most dreadful class I’ve ever taken XD

@Hikachu21 Do you ever feel unsafe on campus? I know campuses like UCB have people that can walk you back. I mean I know it’s La Jolla, but you never know what kind of people are around. Also, what is the point of Triton Transfer Day and how is it different from the freshmen day? (besides the obvious, like how we have IGETC and GEs done and whatnot) Thanks for all your helpful info!

@sleepychickens I’ve only really felt unsafe due to my own personal reasons, but that allowed me to try their escort. They have an escort system where they send people to you and they can escort you to where you’re headed. So, in my experience, I thought they were nice and genuine when they escorted me and they made me feel comfortable and safe again. Aside from that, I never really felt unsafe due to the public, like walking around at night or something. I still prefer buddy system or on a call with someone if I am doing that, but yah, that’s just my personal preference.

I went to both Triton days for transfers and freshman, and from what I saw, they were basically the same. The info isn’t really anything new or hard to look up online. I mean you can get a lot of cheap draw string bags (i have a stupid amount of them LOL), pens, water bottles, stickers, pins, etc. They have some like tables out with just information for stuff. There’s not really activities aside from spinning a wheel to get more free cheap stuff.

@Hikachu21 thank you for all your information! I love free stuff haha. Also how do you suggest integrating into the UCSD culture? I have a few friends at UCSD but I really want to make it my own experience if I attend and I don’t want to feel limited to the people I already know. Are there clubs besides academic based ones? How do you make new friends as a transfer? Your wisdom is greatly appreciated!

Well I guess end of April here we come.

I have a question -
Applying to Economics Major
My college pre-req’d me out of Calc 1 because I had a 4 on the Calc AB test and automatically placed me into Calc II, which I passed with an A+.
However, UCLA/Cal says that only a 5 on the AB test fulfills the pre-req on their transfer website, I couldn’t find the specific equivalency for UCSD

I know it’s kinda late lol but I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not my application would be thrown out purely on this basis…

Thanks & good luck everyone!!

@WhatATimeALIVE I would side on what the Cal/UCLA websites said, especially since Econ is such a competitive major for both, but considering how well you did in Calc 2, it might be overlooked, I don’t know, it’d be up to the admission council, whatever they’re called, admission people who are the gods of our world basically. Frankly, at this point, there is no point worrying over it, there’s nothing to be done, it is what it is, and whats done is done. Good luck!

@sleepychickens Yah integrating into UCSD to make friends can seem hard, cause like you’re coming in as like a 3rd year and people seem to have already found their niche, but that’s going to be every campus. So it’s not that the rumors of UCSD being antisocial are true, cause it totally depends on you as a person and how willing you are trying to put yourself out there to make friends. There are a ton of clubs that’s not academic related that you can join on campus. If you can’t find one you like, you can also start your own. So yah, clubs are a great way to make friends. Forming study groups can also really help with that too, especially if you’re all going to take similar classes in the future! If it’s just a one time class thing, you can still be friends after but it again, like any normal friendship, you guys have to be willing to make that work haha. Finding nice roommates is also a great way to make friends cause I mean you’re living with them for however long, I would hope you guys are friends and have a nice dynamic going on. Getting a job can also help make friends. Getting a position at some lab could do as well. There are plenty of ways to make friends, you just have to put yourself out there  plus, I’ll still be here next year and the next!

@WhatATimeALIVE I believe it is up to the department to whether that is accepted or not. For the most part, it should be accepted. I was enrolled into calc2 in CC without actual credit for calc1 (as of now, I still have 0 college credit for calc1), but I’ve finished and passed all the other calc courses following it. To them, this shows proficient knowledge of the prior course and usually allows it. I only really know from within the engineering and physics department, but I think Econ department may be the same?

For the engineering and physics department, they made me fill out like a short prerequisite form thing for every class that asked for calc1 as a prerequisite. It’s really easy to fill out and it gets passed all the time.

Just wanted to post my stats while waiting for decisions to come out, good luck to everyone!

Major: Communication
GPA: 3.75
IGETC: Completed
AA-T: Yes, and AA in Social/Behavioral Science
Pre-reqs: Completed
E/C: Not much lol, just worked two jobs (one of which was on campus, in the Supplemental Instruction program), 1st gen college student, low income, Dean’s list for 3 semesters

Also, I’m coming from a CCC, but not local (I’m in the South Bay area)
Accepted: CSULB, UCSB
Pending: UCLA, UCSD, SDSU

Idk why you guys are nervous now my portal says they will post the decision by end of April, which I assume that’s mostly for everyone

@siarota that been there for a while, some of us would just like to know

Agreed^^ Dear UCSD admission officers, if for kicks and giggles you are perusing this thread, please release admissions already. I can take it if it isn’t an acceptance… well no I can’t… but if I’m getting rejected don’t make me wait till end of April to find out, that’s just cruel.

@hailey5799 the only people who find out early is acceptances :frowning: hopefully, there is a shot this Friday!! To be fair, it says that San Diego starts late March. Who knows!
