Anyone know the chances of getting in as a Comm major with a 3.13 and all pre reqs & IGETC completed?
@AyGrey I really really hate to break it to you but Computer Science for UCSD is super competitive. The GPA to be SERIOUSLY considered is at least between 3.77-4.0 (20% acceptance rate). On a UC website, it mentioned that to be competitive, you need to have at least a 3.0. I am sorry if I didn’t fully answer your question, but you should’ve realized what you were going for.
@AdultSwimFan Hey there! I think you misunderstood what I meant. I was talking about MAJOR GPA. My overall GPA is 3.71 by the time of the transfer update Now that I clarified that, any thoughts on my question regarding MAJOR gpa?? I am just confused because on the website it says to complete major prerequisite courses with a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA in those courses, but on Assist.org it says that people who complete major prerequisite courses will get PREFERENCE for admission, but it doesn’t say it’s like, mandatory.
@ericbadmon what do you mean 4 done with igetc? Like only 4 general eds done or 4 pre reqs for psych? Thanks for saying that I wish you the best too! Hopefully soon we can give congrats to eachother, maybe even this Friday :]]] I think it’s in your best interest to crank out as much classes as you can! I sure as hell did cause I think my GPA is low, (3.3 from ucsc last year and 3.7ish from this year at cc) tell me your stats?
@Princetonian9 4 prereq courses. Unfortunately, I can’t crank out any more classes cuz I can’t sign up for any more lol. and results might be coming out this friday?
Your GPA is still under their range which is 3.28 - 3.79, even with all that completed unless you have really good essays and ECs, I would say you have an iffy chance of getting in.
Does anyone know if you find out which one of the 6 colleges your in at the same time as your acceptance
@tc00000 You do.
@hailey5799 Would you mind clarifying who you are referring to with that comment?
(this one - “Your GPA is still under their range which is 3.28 - 3.79, even with all that completed unless you have really good essays and ECs, I would say you have an iffy chance of getting in”)
@TaylorD6 was who I was referring to, 3.13 communications major, all pre-reqs and IGETC done.
@hailey5799 Thank you
anyone suspect when the nearest wave of results might come out? is it really possible we might hear tmrw?
@AyGrey Ohhhhh! My bad…For a moment, you made me worried about your GPA. Anyways listen, there’s no such thing as a MAJOR GPA!!! It’s not a real thing!!!. If you need the best answer possible, call UCSD admissions (better than emailing) about your question. They are super sweet and helpful with any questions you have. Hope this helps!
@AdultSwimFan Hahahah no worries, it happens XD And are you sure? lmao, don’t some UC’s require like, a certain GPA for your major prereqs? and I will definitely give them a call
@AyGrey I think I’m sure about that because they pretty much look at your GPA overall. Like I said, if you still want a better answer, you NEED to call UCSD admissions. They are super helpful when it comes to this stuff. So, Good luck! Hope you get in, buddy!
@AdultSwimFan Sounds great! Thanks so much <3 So kind.
@AdultSwimFan On the assist.org page for @AyGrey 's major, it clearly says a minimum GPA for prereq classes, which points to major GPA being a real thing… I know that one guy on the UCLA forum said it wasn’t a real thing, but I’m not sure if he fully knew that or was speculating. I find it hard to believe that the admissions counselors don’t calculate your grades for your prereq classes as a factor for admission. A lot of times, we can take elective courses to boost/inflate our overall GPA. But what matters most are the courses that are required for our majors. Thus, I feel like major GPA is a real thing.
@ericbadmon That makes sense, yeah. But the thing is, the page says those with a 3.0+ major gpa will get PREFERENCE for admission. It doesn’t say it’s mandatory? I am not sure. My problem is that I have a 2.88 Major gpa by the time I did my transfer academic update So according to your logic I won’t get in anywhere? I had medical issues last year, and that’s why my major GPA suffered. I elaborated on that in the additional comments of my application. And I have a massive grade trend, I went from a quarter with a C+ and an F in calculus, and two A’s to a quarter with all A+'s, including the retaken calculus…Think I have a chance at anything? So scared…
I had very good essays, and a LOT of extracurriculars, and of course a 3.7 overall, if that helps at all
@AyGrey Based on the language, I would say that it’s what’s required for you to be considered competitive, but it’s not an auto-reject to not fulfill it. But unfortunately CS is such a competitive major, that you really want to meet all of those requirements necessary to be considered competitive or “preferred.” You have to understand that a lot of your fellow majors who you’re competing with for a spot are gonna have that requirement and more
Still, you might still have a chance with an upward grade trend and ECs. Are you sure your major GPA is that low with the retaken classes? I need to remind you that in the UC/CC system, the higher grade retaken for a course replaces the lower score completely, meaning the lower score will have no weight on your GPA once retaken for a higher grade
Also, I think it’s important to understand that based on the language of your assist.org page, major GPA is most definitely a real thing that some schools consider for certain majors. Otherwise they wouldn’t say anything about a major GPA.
@ericbadmon I will private message you to make things easier
