UCSD Fall 2018 Transfer Thread

@philosophyCAL I’m not sure if philosophy would count as social science or humanities, but UCSD is ranked well in both: #25 for best universities for social sciences in the world, #28 in the world for humanities. UCSD obviously has a great reputation for both. The only UCs that are higher ranked for those categories are UCLA and CAL.

@smittynumone thank you :slight_smile: :slight_smile: :)!!

@srafiq hi! So how the specializations work - you take 8 upper division courses in your specialty, 2 research labs, and during your 4 “core” courses you would pick one of the three to be in your specialty (there is a core class for each specialty. you take additional cores for a well-rounded psychology education.) If you do the BA in psychology you can technically take whatever core and upper division courses you want. The difference is with a BS in a specialty it can help you stand out for grad school applications. You also take calculus for the BS, but not for the BA (you take a philosophy of Logic course instead.) UC schools are starting to ONLY offer a BS and not the BA. (UCSB is the first to discontinue their BA program.) For right now you can do either and it is not big deal. In 10 years when UC’s only have the BS degree, graduate programs could start requiring BS over the BA.
Do not worry so much about what psychology major you applied into or get into because once you are enrolled as a student here, you can log onto your student portal at anytime and change your major. I believe if you were a psychology major and tried to become an engineering major you would need to speak to an advisor and petition, but to just switch between psychology degrees you can do immediately on your own. I was admitted as a Clinical Psychology BS student and switched to the psychology BA during winter quarter and it was no big deal.
As for cognitive science. My understanding is it is harder to get into that program. psychology takes 200 transfers a year and cognitive science is a significantly smaller amount. It is also different from cognitive psychology and neuropsychology… how they are different I am not the best person for that question. What I would recommend is checking out the course offerings for psychology and cognitive science to see which ones sound more like what you are interested in. You should do this for any school you get accepted to - see what is required for the major and what course offerings they have. Some schools might not many in what interests you, this is something that helped me know I wanted to be at UCSD - they had a ton of clinical and developmental psychology courses that really excited me to enroll.
You can be a cognitive psychology major and take a cognitive science class also, if you can fit it into your schedule. Many students here also minor in something… that would be something to explore with your advisor. A lot of students here have double and triple majors and minors… they might take 6 classes a quarter, when 3 is full time. I do not personally recommend that. When you go for a job they do not care if you have a BA or BS, they want you to have a graduate degree, so the sooner you can be done with your undergrad and more onto graduate school the better.
Check out the course links below. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions. If you get in be sure to come to a Psi Chi meeting :slight_smile:

@Vaneeters Berkley is the more prestigious school… have you been to the campus? I recommend visiting if you can. They have 28 libraries, nap pods, parking only for their nobel prize winners… to get into Cal is a huge deal. UCLA is fantastic, but it is not on the same caliber as Cal. Some things I used in my decision to pick a school 1 visit the campus
2 look up what courses I would need to complete to receive my undergrad degree… how many non-major courses did i need to take? are there “university required” courses? Here at ucsd there are major requirements, college requirements, and university requirements. Getting a full picture of what was expected and how long it would take to graduate was important for me to know. 3 what are the course offerings? i am in psychology. some schools I got into I looked at their course offerings and they were very introductory and basic. i picked ucsd because of the large amount of specialty courses that interested me. 4 financial aid package offered (if that concerns you)
Looking at these things and not so much what school it is should help you make a decision you will be happy with!

ps Cal is on the semester system and UCLA is on the quarter system, some people prefer one over the other.

For Philosophy, UCLA and Berkeley are tied, ranking in the top ten of philosophy programs in the US. (They are both tied with Stanford, Columbia, and Harvard.) Of the UC’s, UCSD would be the next highest ranked, closely followed by UCI.

Guys omg only one more day! I cannot believe how quickly April has gone by

I can’t access the portal- does that mean it’s down or is my phone just glitching??

@berkeleynative I can still access the portal

What time do they post for UCSD tomorrow? (If they do)

@muffinpoptarte oh wow you are amazing!!! that helped so much, thanks!!!

@AyGrey i would start checking around 3

@srafiq @earlytransfer11 (and any other psychology transfers) if you google psi chi ucsd we have a wix brainlove website, you can send messages through that - myself and the Psi Chi officers can respond pretty quickly :slight_smile: good luck!

Ok I suddenly don’t want to see the decision noww I’m scared :-SS

@Princetonian9 that how I feel about UCLA decisions. the scariest part to me is that decisions are already done and just sitting there waiting to go out

@srafiq Thank you!

Little more than 24 hours!! ^:)^

Good luck everyone! I remember this feeling very well last year, lol.

Current student here. I walked into admissions today for an unrelated reason, and the desk advisor did not confirm that decisions would release tomorrow when I asked about it, but said they’d definitely be out by the end of the month. I’m sure it will still be tomorrow, just chiming in with more information. I don’t know anything else, please don’t @ me

@DoctorP Thanks!
