UCSD Math Placement Exam

so i didnt take any calc classes in high school and my cc.
the only math class i've taken was intermediate alg and statistics.

Since I am transferring to revelle college, i am required to take 3 course of math (10 series).

any one in the same situation?
or anybody been through the same route?

any tips or advice?

I transferred to UCSD having only completed College Algebra. I also needed to complete Math 10 series. I studied for the math placement exam and placed into Math 10A. After I took the test I called registrations and they took the pre req hold off of my account and was able to take Math 10A and 10B the summer before I transferred there at UCSD. So basically, I went from College Algebra to Calc 2 in like 2 months. I did just fine.

Based on what it sounds like, you don’t want to have to take those three math courses. If this is true, Revelle isn’t for you – try switching to another one of the 6 colleges like Muir or Marshall which don’t have any such requirement.

College Algebra and Intermediate Algebra are not the same thing. Completing a course in College Algebra is usually sufficient preparation for College Calculus. Intermediate Algebra is a more basic course and is not adequate preparation for Calculus.

@Lemaitre. I know they aren’t the same thing, but I couldn’t tell you what was different about them if I tried. I skipped pre-calc which is required to enter calculus by studying for the placement test. I’m confident that I could have done well even if I hadn’t taken College Algebra. My point is, it all depends on the person. Some people may need a lot of math prep to do well in calc, others can just wing it. I winged it and maybe the OP can too.

wow… thanks for the advice USMC.
What study method did you use? Or I mean, what books did you use to study? Did you just take the placement test one time?

My father in law is a math teacher and he tutored me one afternoon for about 3 hours. Below is the link for the UCSD practice placement test. I just went over that practice test with him and just tried to grasp the general concepts of the problems. I suggest you get a tutor to go over the questions with you as well. If you don’t know anyone who can help, you can use “Wyzant” a tutor finder website (I used it a couple times while at UCSD).

I took the test one time and luckily got the results I wanted. You can take it more than once though. You have to hurry and take it soon though if you wanna take 10A and 10B this summer. Also, it is helpful to learn how to use a graphing calculator. Just the basics of it is fine (they are allowed in the test).

Here’s the link, good luck.

Do I need to take the math placement exam if I transfered with all the calculus series completed, linear and differential eq. Completed?
