UDel or UMass?

I am undecided between these two schools; I have researched both a little bit and I found out that UDel ranks amongst the best public universities in the country, while UMass offered me a $8,000 scholarship per academic year.
I was almost sure that I’d be attending UDel but I just found out that it is not a really safe school and that there have been many burglaries and rapes recently.
Being an international female student, I don’t know how much this should affect my choice. What do you think?

What do you want to study? What is the difference in cost between the two schools? Which UMass campus, Amherst? Can’t speak to UDel, but my D is a sophomore at UMass Amherst and loves it. I don’t know if you are a person of color, but my D is. Her friend group is quite diverse, which I think is great. I’ve never heard her say anything to indicate she doesn’t feel safe at school.

The major I initially chose is international business but I am not sure I’ll continue on with this choice. The two schools cost pretty much the same though the scholarship represents an incentive for me. Sorry if I didn’t specify, I am considering UMass Amherst.

My sister is a junior at UDel and absolutely loves it, if you want to go into business I would say UDel would be the best move. However, if paying is a concern I think UMass would be a solid choice too.

International students sometimes have a skewed understanding of the safety of U.S. colleges. This may be because of the inexcusably poor methodology of some foreign (to the U.S) websites related to crime statistics.

If you had been leaning toward UDelaware, you should continue to consider it strongly.

I assure you I have consulted nothing but American websites and reviews written by students that are actually attending/have attended the above mentioned school.

Be sure to factor in ease of transportation to and from the schools.
How close is it to an airport? Is the airport regional or international.
If regional, would you have to change planes or are there direct flight?
How far is the campus from the airport and what mode of transportation is easiest?

I was leaning towards UDel mainly because Rome-Philadelphia is a 10 hours flight with no stops and it’s much cheaper and faster compared to the other option… I am waiting to hear back about a scholarship I applied to, if I get it I will definitely be attending UDel in the fall.

Good luck at Delaware if that works out!

Hi fededede: the UD police officers are really approachable and dedicated and the school has a great record of sharing information with parents and families with regards to concerns. I have heard that other universities may not publish those statistics so readily. UD is in a great location near major cities: Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington DC so the population is greater and more city oriented. This may also be the reason for what you are viewing. This article from the UD news reports that crime is down significantly:

The UD police also seem to have quite a sense of humor: view this youtube video that they created, encouraging students to be in contact with them if needed. It’s adorable!!!

My D is considering Umass and Udel as well. We are OOS. She is a person of color and I would live to hear your feedback on the diversity of the campus. Is there any particular dorm she should choose- she isn’t quiet but doesn’t want to go out every evening.
