UF Dorm Recommendations

^Oops, I forgot about that. Sorry :).

I absolutely loved Yulee. I lived there during the 2006-2007 year. They renovated it shortly after, so I’m sure I’d like it even more now. It’s decent and in a good location. And if you’re a freshman with a car, you could park at the Norman garage right across 13th street.

For me, one of the biggest things was the social interaction and bond that my floor had. We were on the 1st floor (guys), which is pretty small and (mostly) everyone got along and we had a great time. I wouldn’t recommend playing sports in the hallways, though.

Has anyone lived in North Hall? If so, share your experience? Thanks.

is the yulee area mostly girls?

Yeah, Reid-Yulee-Mallory is mostly girls. There were very few male floors in that area (at least when I lived there, but in general, I think this holds true.)

Can someone tell me more info about Springs if you lived there? Thanks guys!

I’ve just been accepted into UF Summer B term 2011 and I AM SO EXCITED YET EXTREMELY CONFUSED!!!
HHHHHEEEEELLLLLLPPPPPPP!!!
First, which are the best dorms?
I’m a girl who loves having a social life lol

Second, how do we know when we get to choose our dorm? I heard there’s a day when you go and decide which room you want?

Third, how advantageous are the meal plans? Which would you say is the best?

Fourth, I applied as undecided so I have no idea which Classes I want to be closest to. Is there any Exploratory classes available or anything of that sort?

And finally, is there a transportation method that can take you to and back from home in the state of Florida? I don’t have a car and would like to visit my family often.

Thank you so much!

most social dorm with the most potential friends: broward
if you like a social life, go out for rush for sorority

recommend declining balance instead of meal plan…cafeteria food kind of sucks…then go to publix once a week on the bus or bike…hitch a ride with a friend with a car

you can definitely be an undecided major and the counselor will steer you to the right classes during preview

jankrav, how would jennings compare to broward in those same ways?

cc77mj, Jennings has more girls floors by far, and broward has I think about the same mix of girls and guys floors. Broward is quite social, Jennings is quite a bit quieter, but wonderful for a girl to meet other girls. Broward is great for girls to meet other girls too. My S lives in Broward as a freshman, now, and loves it…met a ton of great guys. Got bids from 3 fraternities, but decided not to pledge right now (double major Mech/Aerospace Engineering). He recommends Broward to everyone, but only for your first year. Excellent place to meet a circle of friends and then go to North side of campus( Murphree/Fletcher/un airconditioned) or go off campus sophmore year.
If you want more social/convenient location…go broward. If you like things a little quieter, go Jennings. Jennings is a little cleaner and colder A/C. Further from classes, but only by about 5-7 minutes walking.

Choosing Broward will not guarantee you a social life. It is a great location. However, the social really depends on each floor and how they mix. It can simply be luck of the draw. My son was in Jennings for summer B and met a guy he still rooms with today; he was in Broward his freshman year and liked the location but did not luck out with a social floor. Most of the time he didn’t know who his RA was.
I think you can’t go wrong with Broward or any of the dorms in that area. My daughter is learning towards Jennings since just renovated; I think Broward is 2nd choice. Would love Beatty layout but knows that might be harder to meet people.
One of my co-workers rushed her sophmore year - she was very clear that her freshman year was tough but once she rushed me found her niche. My son has his niche in IIE and work.
For everyone is different but the one thing they all have in common is how proud they are they chose the Gator Nation over any other school.

I have this on another post so please excuse the repetition. if my son paid his $25.00 on October 28th 2010. This is when he received the email from housing, for his fall 2011 housing. Is this the date they use to establish his preference for housing.

Or is it when he pays the $200.00?

It is the date he submitted the $25.00 back in October that is his priority date.

There is no rush to submit the $200.00 housing deposit, as priority date has already been established.

I’m a guy and personally I chose Jennings as my #1 because I liked the actual dorms better. However, now that I see multiple people saying its more a girl dorm, is that bad? Don’t you mostly make friends with those in your hall anyways? My second choice is broward, but I really didn’t like the feel of it.

And also for the post above…

I believe it says on the e-mail that your $25 spot is held… until March 1. If you don’t pay on/before March 1 then your number gets “reset” and you get a new number when you pay your $200.

nolefan1616 you are right…you will most likely make most of your friends with the guys on your dorm floor. However, since there are very few floors of guys in Jennings, there are less spots to choose from overall when you are able to pick.

what would you recommend for a junior level transfer.on campus or off

I think you could meet a lot more people if you went to the upperclassmen type of dorms…Murphree is the best…a sink in the rooms, a partition between roommates. Fletcher is fine too. The un airconditioned dorms–buckman, thomas (?) are cheaper and many rooms are huge. You can go to home depot/Lowe’s and buy and inexpensive air conditioning unit that sits on the floor (tall and thinnish). Also, Lakeside is a great place with 4 person rooms, kitchens, newer. However, you pretty much have to bike or bus to campus, but it is nearer to SW rec center. I think you will meet more friends living on campus for one year, then move off campus.

I understand that the rooms at Hume Hall are very nice but how is it socially? My son is very concerned about having a good balance and doesn’t want to be with people who do nothing but study. Please help!!

This thread should be restarted or refreshed in the future for people entering the upcoming terms. There’s a lot of info here that I’ve found useful. :D
