@manaziraman I won’t hold my breathe for RD decision in Feb, my son was in same boat 2 years back and he was accepted to PREP in RD after being CS deferred in EA. And he is now in CS.
Accepted Computer Engineering
1550 SAT, 3.4-3.5 UW, 4.4 W, top 10%
In-state, male, white
6 APs taken, lots of major-related ECs (robotics, internships with tangible results for company)
Everyone said my essay was very good
Hope to see all of you in the fall!
@PPofEngrDr any idea what % of the deferred (in EA) gets in RD. My son’s choice is Mechanical. Also once you get deferred do you have to send anything to the admission’s office to show that you are still interested in UIUC?
In state Caucasian male accepted Political Science 35 Act 3.47UW 3.84W
Decent EC Varsity baseball, BPA state champ 2x
Good test scores= Accepted at state schools, don’t let anybody try to tell you that having a 4.0 GPA will do anything for you if you have a sub 30 act
@AAA124555 EA deferred pitting against RD pool and as long as RD pool is stronger than you, your chances are less. I don’t have any specific numbers for EA deferred to RD acceptance, but it is wildly depend on how many EA offered accepts it (remember EA offered also has deadline May 1st to accept it) and how strong RD pool is between now and Jan 1 (RD application deadline). In fact, my son didn’t even choose a 2nd major and after EA deferred, he picked the 2nd major (believe here application process is tricky as it some of majors are exclusive choices and even though he had CompE as 2nd choice he can’t pick CompE as he had CS as 1st choice, if we remember correctly same scenario applies for MechE and AeroE). If you are so committed to UIUC, but not a particular major, then other choice is change your 1st choice to 2nd preference (in his case CompE), which my son wasn’t willing to do.
As per UIUC blog, https://blog.admissions.illinois.edu/?p=29029, they won’t accept any additional documents. EA deferred has final decision by March 1.
On a side note my younger one, last year had EA BioE and choose Northwestern because of pre-med interest and let BioE go in last week of decision time. So slot is open at that time and certain so many other competent, qualified students are there to choose from to offer that spot.
Half deferred applicants admitted last year. From 2017 Local paper
Record number of UI applicants leads to record number of admissions
Tue, 02/07/2017 - 7:00am | Julie Wurth
URBANA — A record number of admissions offers went out to University of Illinois applicants this year, with thousands of students getting the news Friday.
More than 23,200 students were admitted to the UI for 2017-18, a new high and about 1,000 more than last year, according to Andrew Borst, director of undergraduate admissions.
A record number of students — more than 38,700 — had applied to the university for fall 2017.
Borst expects next fall’s freshman class to be similar to this year’s, in terms of size, academic quality, diversity and residency. This year’s class set a record, with 7,593 students.
The average ACT score of admitted students is 29.90, compared with 29.91 last year, “statistically no difference,” he said.
Of the 23,200 students, more than half had been admitted in December under the UI’s “early action” option. After a two-year experiment with a single application deadline — with all students notified on the same day in February — the UI went back to the early notification option this year.
Students who applied by Nov. 1 received the news on Dec. 16. About 13,800 were admitted, about 4,000 were denied and another 4,000 were deferred.
Just under half of those deferred applicants — almost 1,900 — were admitted on Friday. About 900 remain on a waiting list, and 400 were denied admission.
@PPofEngrDr thank you so much for your valuable advise, so did your son ultimately get in during RD? My son wants to do Mechanical and does not want to compromise on the major. As you have gone through this process, after the deferral do you communicate with the admission office and send them emails or forms (letter of interest) to show that you are still interested in UIUC or you do not have to do anything at this point just wait and hope you might get in. Can you please advise what is the process after deferral in EA.
@TytoAlba sure overall deferred looks high, but when it comes to highly competitive engineering majors like CS, MechE and BioE, that number is drastically reduced. Just to put in perspective, my son just a year before batch, couldn’t make a cut to CS from CS EA deferred, has Purdue and UIC CS offer, but hit a home run during PREP (James Scholar, Dean list) freshman year and now doing CS, as PREP to CS transfer.
For those above asking about deferral and chances of admission when applying engineering, be aware that engineering defers a substantial portion of its applicants, the majority of whom are eventually admitted, but a large portion of those do not get their first choice major and instead get second choice or Division of General Studies.
As to all deferred, the new information you can submit is recent SAT or ACT test scores, such as the December test. Otherwise, you are not supposed to submit new information unless needed to correct information already provided, e.g., you have dropped a class you were showing as taking in senior year. UIUC does not want your first semester senior year grades – in fact even if you are wait-listed when regular admissions decisions are issued, it does not want your first semester grades. A poster earlier promoted sending a long email to admissions describing one’s passion for UIUC, why it is the first choice, etc., because the poster’s child was deferred EA and admitted RA last year after doing so. That poster makes an incorrect conclusion of the impact of such an email. If you send that email, it will not be provided to those who actually make the admission decisions and thus will have no impact on the decision.
Also, I note that many in this thread emphasize their SAT subject test scores. Subject test scores are not used to determine admission, and the scores if provided are not provided to those who actually make your admission decision.
Finally, I have seen many comments about in-state applicants being favored, some mention heavily, over out-of-state. UIUC actually admitts both on the same basis.
My daughter got deferred in CS (first choice major) and now we are thinking to change first choice major to Stat+CS (the application process allows it but need to write a new essay). Can someone suggest if this is a good idea to change from CS to stats+CS after getting deferred? Our only reason for change is to increase her chance of getting in during RD knowing CS in engineering is the hardest? She really likes this school and CS major and is fine to combine with stats. Please suggest if this is a good strategy or this can negatively affect her chances in RD.
@AAA124555 we attempted to reach out to various advising office but due to fact that its holiday it was hard to reach and hold anyone unless you are willing to go there and meet someone. 2nd, there was nothing significant new to report in terms of scores and academics. What he did was select a 2nd choice (it was non-eng) and still he didn’t make a cut to CS when RD decisions come out and he was offered PREP.
Can I ask a dumb question? What is PREP?
@catsdogs54 as the Stat+CS suggests it is like Stat major and CS minor. Also Stat+CS is in LAS, not CoE. I suspect even application allows to select multiple CS related choices, like CS and CompE are exclusive choices in application (at least 2 years back when my son applied, don’t know how it looks like now). An admission is not a guarantee for future success, rather go after where your passion is.
PREP is no guarantee. Let’s not sell it as a give:
Given the high demand, competitive applicant pool, and space limitations of these three programs (CS, EE, BIOE), we cannot guarantee ICT for them. Even if a student meets the minimum 3.75 overall and technical GPA requirement, we estimate that the chances of successfully transferring into one of these three majors is less than 20 percent.
@sunnryz lol just search UIUC PREP…
