<p>On my Personal Info page in Wolverine Access, it says Pending for my residency. I was born in Michigan and have no one in my family living outside of the state so I don't need to fill anything out. </p>

<p>Nevermind. Just checked the FAQs. It said they change the pending after you’re admitted.</p>
<p>Son’s residency status changed from Pending to In State on Monday. No view decision link yet. Any thoughts? Does this mean he’ll be admitted? Or, more likely that they’ve started looking at his app?</p>

For all students applying for 2011 and beyond, residency determinations will occur after admission. All students who have indicated that they are Michigan residents will show “pending” as their residency status on web app status in Wolverine Access until they are admitted and officially reviewed by the Residency Classification Office.

<p>My son’s also changed 2 days ago from pending to in state…I, too, read the site and found that it says this won’t be done until after admitted…I am hoping it means good news for my son! We’ll see…</p>

<p>No…I asked via email and was told it doesn’t mean anything other than they’ve verified residency status.</p>

<p>In you app if you had done any course outside of Michigan, be it Summer school or whatever, it could trigger the residency state to be different from “resident” until UMICH spends time to validate the residency</p>
<p>Why would Michigan spend time determining/verifying the residency of every in-state applicant if they know that virtually everyone applying will not lie about their state residence - this in addition to the fact that Mich will receive transcripts & other info that essentially verifies this. It appears that the residency status is used primarily if not solely for tuition purposes - something that wouldn’t come into play until admittance.</p>

<p>JonLouis it would make sense for UM not check the residency status of Out of State students anyway. They have nothing lose.</p>

I think that question was removed because my boyfriend and I saw it, so we both called admissions to see if it was true, got two different answers, so we called again for a tie breaker. They said the process was actually the opposite, and I think they changed mid-EA season. Shortly thereafter, the question was removed. Hope I helped. =]</p>
<p>Keep in mind that it is essential for them to know whether an applicant is IS or OOS because they maintain a ratio of IS to OOS so they know they need to fill x IS spots and x OOS spots (x yield rate) to end up with a class.
This means, I expect, that in some cases they would need to make a residency determination to be comfortable with formal offers (in the context of their quotas, etc.)</p>
<p>So my guess might be that it’s a promising sign but not conclusive.</p>
