UMaryland- College Park

i got into umd. unfortunately i can't get a good impression of what the school is like from the website, and i won't be able to visit for another month. i'd be going to the journalism school, and got into college park scholars (probably media scholars, or arts). and if anyone knows anything about the president's scholarship and what that entails, that would also be helpful.

if anyone could please tell me some PROS and CONS about the school, what are some impressions of the school from people who have been there/attend, or about those specific programs, that would be so great. thanks!

Well I haven't offically visited, but I have been there several times do to the fact that I live in Maryland. I wasn't all that impressed. But I like small/tiny schools out in the middle of nowhere so I wasn't really that open minded. It is a huge school, and freshmen classes tend to be rather large. Plus it is a huge campus and you will def. be doing a lot of walking. Not to say that is a bad thing, it will help to keep off the freshman 15 :). It is also very busy, something is always going on. This can be a pro for some, but I don't like be run down by big yellow school buses all the time. Recently UMD has been having some security prob. Mainly with parties that are out of control and all that, but generally the honors kids aren't the ones that are found drunk and naked out in front of their dorms at 6:00am. I guess this is enough for the cons I can give you some pros too. Lots of people mean lots of programs. You can def. find anything you are interested in at UMD. Plus the honors program is quite good. Def. many opportunities for internships and stuff. Plus it isn't that far from D.C. I love D.C. Well I hope I didn't put you off. I do think it is a great school. I hope you get a chance to see it for yourself. Good Luck

It's actually a great campus. There's something for everyone, and very similar to Penn State or something along those lines in that aspect. At any school you go to, be it a state institution or a private university, there are going to be kids who drink and party. At the same time, there will also be students who don't drink or party...
It is big..but that's a good thing in my opionin. It gets boring when you run into the same people every week and never see new faces. Everyone seems to know everyone elses business at small schools, that's not the case at MD.
Baltimore is sorta close by, and it's not nearly as bad as everyone makes it out to be. It's a city, there are some things that you just don't do in ANY city. :) DC is closer..I love it there, that's why I hopefully will be at Georgetown this fall..
I hope this was helpful?

UMCP has what every real estate professional talks about. Location, location, location - close to DC, close to Baltimore-lots of opportunites for internships, etc.
Yes, it is a big campus, but some programs are very small and close knit.
Like any school - it is what you make of it.
Good luck with your decision

thanks everyone! has anyone heard anything about the journalism school, or the scholars program?
