Son got into engineering program . but surprisingly not in honors college. Sat 800 math /770 verbal. Subject tests - 800 math 2. 800 physics. Gpa. unweighted- 3.95/4.0. In state
@NotSoTrAnsParent Congrats, yes the honors college acceptance has been very surprising and unsettling. Not getting into the program is a big blow and now we have to wait till march to see all our options. Oh well, you know what they say about counting your eggs before they hatch I guess I did that …
@NotSoTrAnsParent that is quite surprising considering your son’s stats. Based on stats and grades he seems like a solid candidate. Did your son participate in any extra curriculars in high school?
My in state son19 will apply to UMass engineering next year but said he’ll only consider if he gets into honors college, and he has worse stats than your son. We have a friend who is a freshman in engineering there and he had lesser stats too, but lots of extra curricular stuff, and got accepted to the honors program.
Accepted to Engineering last night! CHC, $2k Dean’s award (in state).
1460 SAT (740 math/720 English)
630 Math 1 subject test
30 ACT
8 total APs including this year
Top 10 in class of 300.
This is kind of late to comment on, but I met with an academic adviser at UMass in the early fall with some questions about CHC. In the past few years it has become much more competitive, and strong stats like high SAT scores and GPAs don’t really do as much for students as they used to. CHC was designed for a diverse group of highly talented students, but when the admissions focused on those hard numbers for admissions, they were finding that CHC was basically composed of STEM students. Nothing against English, film, dance, business etc but typically the STEM students had overall better numbers. The admission criteria has changed a bit because they want a more holistic community of students to better represent all of the different programs UM has to offer.
any decisions today?
@leapyearG Merit scholarship was in the acceptance letter that we received online.
@figrsk8er530 With your stats you should definitely have been accepted to honors. Perhaps you should call to see if there was an error?
@lisag519 Thank you for the information. No merit and no Honors. Hoping for better results from the RD schools. At least there are choices but still feeling down.
Anyone know who we can contact in administration if we have questions?
UMass Amherst is closed today (severe weather). I will be surprised if we hear any decisions tonight.
Anyone heard from the college of humanities, and fine arts yet?? Sorry if this was already discussed I just cannot read 52 pages of this. I don’t expect anything today, because they are closed but i am getting worried. Thanks.
I still didn’t get a response OOS for Comp Sci. Should I be worried?
@figrsk8er530 sorry to hear that. their loss indeed. may be they thought you are overqualified and you might be considering it a safety and used that CHC carrot on a student more likely to join? does not make sense, why then give an admission at all?. unless there is some state law requiring them to do so.
All I have heard so far is acceptances from people at school and online? has anyone been rejected yet?
@RightCoaster : he has lots of APs, strong ECs , and leadership… but after hearing @figrsk8er530 s stats, i am speechless… trying to make sense of it. hoping for better news from other places.
@NotSoTrAnsParent it doesn’t make much sense. I personally know a kid that got accepted to the honors college last year for engineering with not as good stats and literally no STEM extra curriculars. He was a good student, but definitely did not get a 1560 SAT like @figrsk8er530 .
It must be they don’t think those super high stats are likely to enroll anyways, so why burn an Honors College Slot on them?
I’ve never really looked into the honors college stats and results before, maybe they only take a certain % of in state kids? I had originally thought my kid might get into the honors program, but not now for sure.
OOS -Accepted 1/3 applied EA Nov 1st. engineering
3.91 UW 11/350 $14k Chancellors per year !
Congrats to all !!
Hello all…Guess I’m late to this party but I have been going crazy trying to figure out whether my son has been accepted at U MA Amherst (Business Major)…Has anyone heard from them? Seems that there are a lot of other colleges being discussed…I went back several pages, but nothing about business. We have not heard anything and when I look online, it seems to be saying that nothing can be done until they receive some more paperwork. I called the admissions office and they told me that it was fine as long as none of the items listed were red. Don’t understand why we have not heard ANYTHING. Do they send an email? Do they mail out anything or is it all online? We are new to this process. Thanks for your patience.
I’m still waiting. Business. In-state. What are your son’s stats? I’m SAT 1510, GPA not so great at 3.74 weighted. I’m thinking I will be deferred Bc of my GPA. My term 2 grades will bring up my GPA.
My S is OOS waiting to hear from Isenberg…fingers crossed
