Thanks everyone, I’m gonna wait to see if I get into udel or uconn, and if they put me in the major or not. So far I got into umass($6) quinnipac ($19) u of Hartford ($21) and penn state but the hazelton campus. Got deferred from Binghamton. And waiting on other schools. Out of the 4 I got into I like umass the best but I also didn’t visit the other schools. I think I like the big campus feel. I wonder if I’ll get into udel or uconn, they are my other top favs.
@Nisky1 wait all I need is a 2.0!!! And C and higher to transfer into the engineering!!! That’s good! Y wasn’t I put into it I don’t get it haha
@michelle2912, I would suggest digging a bit deeper, but my belief is that if you want in on engineering and have the grades in the required courses, the department will want you. I like your reaction about 2.0, it will likely be more competitive than that.
Here is a good way to think about it. If you do well enough to feel good about going into engineering, you will highly likely be above the actual bar.
Do not be intimidated or deterred by the “undeclared” offer - you have something others would jump at in an instant.
Let the process play out, do your homework on the different possibilities - your options can only get better. A point may come where you say to one school “gimme my major now or I am off yonder!”
@michelle2912 Two years ago my son was applying to schools for Mechanical Engineering. We are MA residents. He got accepted to Umass Lowell, UCONN, uri, unh for Mech eng. For umass Amherst he got accepted “undeclared”. He had a 3.3 uw, 1980 SAT. UCONN was his top choice but UMass had to be considered due to lower cost. He is now a sophomore at UCONN.
Good luck!
@michelle2912 if I were you, I would definitely go elsewhere. I know that if I were accepted undeclared instead of to management, I would go elsewhere.
@michelle2912 - As @CofusedMominMA explained the Engineering program at UMass Amherst is quite picky and selective. (And is getting more so every year) This is likely because engineering is a very tough subject and they will not let someone in if they are not certain you can keep up. This being said, I think it is possible to transfer into it considering you got solid grades in the early major courses. Staying above a 3.0 is important, this is easier said than done with Physics courses involved. Lastly, UMass may simply not be the best bet for you, please keep the other schools you got accepted to in mind and their costs. Hope this helps.
PS - The average engineering GPA in a competitive program is actually about a 2.7… so kill those early classes if you want to survive. Luck to ya!
@ConfusedMominMA wait so ur son got accepted into ucomn engineering but not umass, cuz uconn is one of my tops as well
Thanks for helping me everyone
@michelle2912 Are you female? It will be easier to get into if you are. I don’t think you will have any trouble tbh, just do well in your classes and you will be fine.
@Michelle2912- yes, exactly. It was funny because his HS GC had told him that he would probably have more trouble getting into UMass than UCONN but we didn’t believe him. Guess he was right!
When we went to an Open House at UMass and went to the Engineering talk, they said that average gpa was 3.5! Began to seriously think he might have trouble at that point.
Ya, a 3.5 with all STEM classes in undergraduate… that’s a nightmare…
@ConfusedMominMA hope I get into uconn then too! @fallenwinter yea I’m a girl
@michelle2912 Good luck!
Did anyone who got deferred hear anything back?
I know it’s a little wait but I’m still waiting to hear back, anyone want to chance me based off this years results?
2.91/3.19/1220(out of 1600)/4 APs/ Very good essay, good recs, very strong trend (did absolute terrible freshman and sophomore year with about a 2-2.5 gpa but junior and senior year with a 3.6-3.7), only a few ECs (one club, two sports, job for junior and senior year).
Also recently waitlisted at UConn (afraid I’ll receive the same fate here).
Accepted to UMass Amherst with a Chancellors Award of 8k per year for 4 years.

What do you guys think of my chances at Purdue? I know this isn’t a chances thread, but I thought I’d just ask. Applied for Comp Science at Purdue College of Science.
If accepted to Purdue, I would probably go there…
Purdue isn’t a leap from Amherst, especially in CS. They seem to be about tied when it comes to CS. I would go with the cheaper one. This being said take time too look at both schools.
It seems like that you cannot check your stats online:/ I submitted my application in December and still haven’t heard anything back Anyone any idea?
