Thank you @futurewillywonka! Great info!!
Got accepted today as an undeclared major!!! Super excited but I was also accepted to Bentley today. I definitely have decisions to make but I plan on visiting soon. Thanks to everyone who helped me remain somewhat hopeful! Sorry for those who were not accepted, I have no doubt that you will do well whereever you end up!

This video may help those who weren’t accepted. UMASS is actually under a lot of heat right now
@nyclexyo wow. I was denied from UMass and deferred from Bentley. I hate you lol but for real, congrats!
The informant controversy is pretty disgraceful to be honest. The school violated their own policy and allowed an addict to be a snitch on his dealer. Makes me happy that UMass rejected me.
@ibad96 @nyclexyo Perhaps it would be best to not hate on UMass since it’s basically a small city… so unfortunately things happen. Overall I think, safety wise, the campus is better than ever since student offenses are crazy low compared to past years. PS - Here’s NYU’s top story of the week… http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2015/01/nyu-arsonists-lawyer-says-victim-participated.html
In line with Greenman57, go easy. By this standard, if you knew what happened behind the scenes, you would find challenges in many places.
These situations are an “education in reality” - there are things that if one does, puts many people into a very difficult situation. It is not hard to imagine an equally difficult situation if UMass had done the opposite to what they actually did, they would be fried if the results were adverse.
No need to be looking for reasons to dislike a school. Buckle up and be ready for the place you do attend.
Congrats nyclexyo.
Point taken. Congrats to all who were accepted, and best of luck to you in your lives!
@Ibad96 - That’s the spirit! Luck to you 2! ^.^
If I go there undeclared, could I get into there engineering or accounting programs, or is it hard cuz I’m not going into it right away. I’m scared
On campus admissions to isenberg business school is tough- 3.5 GPA essay less than 50% applicants get in https://www.isenberg.umass.edu/sites/default/files/Documents/UG%20On%20Campus/BBA_On-Campus_Transfer_Info_9_14.pdf
I don’t know what to do, because umass is the favorite out of the ones I have been accepted to so far, but they r also the ones who didn’t put me in my major and put me into undeclared, what should I do?
Ugh I wanna cry, I just want to like where I go, and have a good major
@michelle2912 Don’t cry! You can always re-apply for your major!
But when do u do that, and is it gonna be extremely hard, or is It gonna be ok if I go to umass undeclared
Like am I better off going to umass undeclared or go to let’s say quinnipac and already be in a major
@michelle291 Well Quinnipiac is $42,270 without Room and board and UMass instate is $13,258 not counting scholarships. Additionally, I think UMass is higher ranked in general, especially engineering. So I would say UMass is the clear option unless you… 1- Prefer a smaller school 2- Want to stay closer to home 3- Love Quinnipiac
PS- You should be all set at UMass, I wouldn’t worry about your major as you should be able to transfer into one you like.
@michelle291, it should work ok.
The following link lays out the requirements: http://engineering.umass.edu/current-students/admission-major
I assume you will be very motivated, and will have a very clear view of what is needed, which can only be a good thing. Folks starting in the major who do not make those standards will be having difficulty holding on.
Some schools encourage you to start out undeclared, it requires you doing a bit more thinking and planning than otherwise, but that process will serve you well down the line.
Your awareness of the choices and implications will be better than others who are locked in from the start. May be a bit uncomfortable for a while, but it is a good experience.
@michelle2912 If you are truly dead set on UMass I would say to take your chances on re-applying for your major later on. If not, going somewhere else that accepted you would probably be a good idea.
@michelle291 I feel your pain. If I had not already decided to attend another school I would be in the exact same situation. The hard truth is it is NOT so easy to transfer into Business at UMass Amherst although Engineering looks a bit easier. For business less than 50% of the on campus students who apply are admitted. You have to decide if you are ready for the added stress freshmen year of competing for those coveted spots. In addition getting required classes in those majors can be tough as they give students already in the major priority. You would also have to have a back up plan for if you did not get into the major you wanted ( another Major, transfer schools…) That being said it is doable and it really comes down to how much you want to attend UMASS. There are many other great options out there that will allow you to study the major you choose. I find it a bit offensive that UMASS tells me what area I can and can not study when I pay the same tuition as the next guy (maybe more) however I do also see how allowing people in undeclared gives more people a shot. Best of luck with your decision and I’m sure you will be successful wherever you end up.
