For Presidential, max is 8000/year for IS and 12000/year for OOS
Does CP state anywhere whether need is considered in awarding these scholarships?
Just attended the B/K award luncheon yesterday, we were told that the average stat for B/K invites is: SAT: 1520; GPA: 4.6 (weighted) + ECs.
370 students are invited for interview this year and more than half of them will get the full scholarship.
Does anyone know if all Presidential Scholarship notifications been mailed out or do they stagger the mailings?
@Ireadcc Can you tell us how your actual BK interview went? My son has his tomorrow and we are curious what to expect. Thanks!
yup, @Ireadcc, My applicant is definitely in that group, with a weighted gpa of 4.87, so I am still surprised he was not a finalist. But no hard feelings, you can’t always get what you want, or “think” you “deserve”. I was just surprised. His presidential scholarship is great, don’t get me wrong, and if he chooses CP, it will definitely be the least expensive of his possibilities. Congratulations to you on your B/K and I hope you are very happy with the results.
@jackjenson, I am a parent and my S2 gets the invite. S2 also mentions that some of his classmates who have similar stats as him do not receive the B/K invites. The stat also has another component “+ECs” in addition to SAT scores and GPA. “+ECs” is subjectively interpreted by admission.
Congratulations to your Presidential scholarship.
@mdneglag, The interview lasts for 20 min. I think UMD matches the faculties (2 interviewers) with the potential major of the interviewees. The interviewers have the applicant’s whole application on their hands (actually it is on their computer screens). They know the interviewee’s background, interests and etc. This is not a secret. They tell you during the luncheon.
What questions to be asked? This is what I remember from the Powerpoint presentation during the luncheon:
“What is your strength?, What is your weakness? What will you do ten years from now? Do you have any questions to ask?” I think you will have the same presentation tomorrow. They also remind the students to show their smiles during the interview.
Here is our personal experience: D1 got the B/K invite in 2008 and her experience was not very good. She ended up getting partial scholarship. However, many of her classmates at that time had good experiences with different interviewers. So, it was just an individual experience. @itllbeok also mentioned in another thread that her son’s last year interview experience was somewhat hostile. Her son also received partial scholarship. Interestingly, both D1 and @itllbeok’s son received additional substantial amount of scholarship money in addition to the partial B/K scholarship and this should be looked at as a positive sign. UMD really wants you.
S2’s yesterday’s experience was good. He talked about his FBLA activities (accepted to Smith) and volunteering experiences. The interview went great.
Thank you for the reply @lreadcc. When did your D1 find out she received additional scholarship money? Was it after she found out she got the partial scholarship? I did see there are departmental scholarships as well.
HOLY COW! $48,000, each year $12,000. 2180 (1460) SAT, 4.3 W GPA, Virginian. This is shocking.
Gah, I’d like to know too - does anyone know?
*on a side note, congrats to everyone who received scholarships!!
@mdneglag, I kept all the documents/correspondences. The B/K notification was dated on Mar27, and the department scholarship letter was dated Mar26.
Good luck with your B/K interview tomorrow.
@Ireadcc sorry to bother you but I’ve tried to post a couple of other places tonight without success. Do you know whether the departmental programs in the morning of B-K are formal programs or just an informal meet and greet? D2 isn’t quite certain when she needs to be there… Thanks! And thanks for posting information about the interviews. That’s kind of you.
@lreadcc Thanks so much for the information and best of luck to your son! My son was also accepted to Smith.
@Arlmom2. On Monday Mar2, UMD opened 2h late. The B/K registration was postponed to 10:30am. We got there at around 11:00am. We did not know whether the departmental programs were cancelled or held as scheduled.
Thanks, @Ireadcc I think we’ll just assume it’s a formal session. I appreciate your help. Best of luck to your son with the scholarship!
It’s a pretty amazing program. D2 hasn’t applied anywhere else that’s nearly this generous, although Tulane also has excellent merit aid.
Have any CP Scholars received merit aid yet? Is it possible I may not receive any even though I was invited into the program?
@luvmydog123 My CP scholar received a presidential scholarship yesterday, $8,000. substantially less than all other university offers.
@luvmydog123 merit aid is independent of any programs you might have been invited to, so it is possible that you won’t receive anything. However, being invited to the scholars program is a good indicator that you will receive something since CP clearly liked you enough to invite you to the program.
@Matt846, Need is not considered for the Presidential. Don’t know if UMD states that anywhere, but DS got $32K instate and did not file FAFSA.
