UMTC Housing application for 2019/20 Academic Year Now Open

The website says 11/27 but in fact it opened up today. S19 is #208 in line - whoo hoo!

$50 non-refundable application fee to get in the queue. You shouldn’t have to be admitted yet but if you think there’s a good chance you will end up at UMTC it might make sense to spend the money.

35 in line...whoop!

How do I check my number in line?

Looking at the first e-mail you are sent by housing as soon as you start the process, check your application number and subtract the first application number (both are likely six digits). The difference should be your place in line this year.

Is the place in line dependent on when the application is finished or just when the application is started?

@Henxnr What time did you do it? #35 is amazing.

My son got #165. Which is awesome!!!

@mntonkatwin - not sure but you have to pay right away and then you can’t quit out of the application till you’ve acknowledged the housing contract, chosen your six dorms and clicked a couple of boxes, etc. so it’s all around the same time. BTW, don’t worry about which dorms you select as those can be changed as many times as you want before the May deadline. We just put down the first six dorms or something like that. Took about a minute.

We signed up one child, but stopped after we paid the deposit and just started to go back. I think the payment thing might be messed up. We got a confirmation last night after stopping and a que number, but to go back today, I had to select a payment option again. I just chose send in payment as I had paid via credit card. I will see later what happened.

@UMNMom I pretty much did the application first thing in the morning when I got to school. We have laptops so it was pretty easy to just log on, sign up, pay and then get my number. Still trying to figure out what dorm I would like to live in!

I didn’t realize you could check your spot. I got #53!!

Is housing a huge issue at UMTC to the point that people need to put the deposit down before weighing other options? ? I.e. are some dorms way better than others? Anyone know which ones are favorite for students in business school? That building does seem kind of out of the way from the main drag.

One of the main freshman dorms (Pioneer) was closed for remodeling, leading to a bit of a shortage for incoming students. It is supposed to open for 2019-2020, so I’d think it is no longer huge issue unless it’s your top choice or top safety and you have a strong preference for specific dorms. Plus, the deposit isn’t as prohibitive compared to some schools.

The “insurance” fee of $50 has doubled from a couple years ago. At that time, most would gladly pay the $25 with certainly in order to secure one of their top choices, even if they weren’t 100% guaranteed to go to UMN.

UMN has guaranteed housing for the freshman class but that can mean triples for those who sign up later. Not sure of that specific date, unfortunately, and it varies every year.

@doglover you will only be taking one business course per semester over at Hanson during your first year unless you are coming in with AP Calc. and Econ under your belt. Most first year courses are going to be pre-reqs and Gen. Eds which can pretty much happen anywhere on campus.

I thought I signed up early enough… evidently not as I’m number 2,203 in line. I’m in a bit of a predicament where my physical safety depends on me getting one of my top choices, my first choice being a double in Middlebrook.

Does anyone know if I still have a solid chance of getting my first choice (or a room in Pioneer)? I’m not even totally sure if I’m attending the U of MN since I don’t have any decisions from any other schools yet.

(also if anyone is or knows of an LGBT+ (emphasis on T) tolerant dude wants a double in MB and has a higher spot in line lmk ;))

You might look into the Lavendar House LLC. Also, not sure how Middlebrook is going to be any more or less likely to ensure your safety than any other dorm, since they are all under the same rules and regulations, unless you have a disability or physical challenge that requires specific housing in case of emergency or somesuch. In that case, would recommend contacting Housing with any questions not answered on their website.

If your concern is accessing gender open housing you will find a variety of choices below (also, see link) and can contact them with any specific questions.

@QuantumLeapfrog I am in the same situation. The coordinator for gender open housing is very helpful with the requests and can explain a lot if you email her.

I signed my daughter up on November 1st and she is number 169 in line. However, today I saw that you have to claim your ticket for a place in line. Any ideas what this is about and what that all means? Pretty confusing.

OP can you please provide a link? Thanks!

Sure - I am confused by what they might need a ticket for?

Oh yes that. Might be a good idea to call; however, I’m reading into it that this is for current students. You see, when you go to the application site: https://housing.umn.edu/housing-sign-applications you see that for returning students there is an option to apply by 11/27. When you click on that, you go right to the room sign up site. And that site now says “Returning Resident Room Sign-UP” which I’m not sure it did before LOL. They must have fixed that due to a few calls!

We signed my son up on 11/1 and he has a housing application. No way is he getting assigned a room at this point since we’ve been told the deadline isn’t till May. A good number of applicants haven’t even been accepted yet. Of course the new kids get whatever is left over but, barring a frosh dorm situation, that’s pretty much true at any college or uni.
