I am transferring from SBU next semester and just found out that I will not receive credit for WRT 102 at my new college.

I'm trying to swap it out of my schedule for a different class, but I keep receiving an error: "WRT 102 is a required course and cannot be dropped. You can, however, swap to another open section of this course."

Has anyone else had to deal with this? I'm not sure who I try to contact to get this course removed. It is ridiculous that I am locked into taking this course when it will not count towards anything next semester.

In the class notes it says: "Students who do not attend 1st week will be deregistered". I don't want to risk having a W or something on my transcript if I just keep the class and don't attend the first week. Anyone have any advice?

Try contacting the registrar. Explain the situation to them. They should be able to advise you.

Sorry to see that you’re leaving, but remember that you might run into walls if you come at it saying that you’re leaving; the system is designed to help our students persist and graduate, not transfer elsewhere.

It’s not ridiculous, because it’s a required course here. If you’re not happy with the requirements here, your best bet might be to spend this semester elsewhere and then transfer from there.

I think it is ridiculous that anybody in college gets locked into taking a course, whether or not they are transferring and whether or not the course is required. It is basically saying that the people at SB don’t trust that I will take it during another semester. I am not an idiot or a child, I understand what the requirements for graduation are without having SOLAR force me to take a course. I don’t care if I have to take writing here and at my new school, I just wanted to swap it with another course that is earlier in the day so I can go to work earlier.

To suggest that I transfer a month before the semester starts, just so I can transfer again is absurd and unhelpful - so thank you to the student who gave me the number to the Registrar’s Office, because I couldn’t find it on the website.

Everybody I’ve encountered that works for Stony Brook automatically puts up a wall when I say I’m transferring, especially the advisers and counselors I’ve asked for help or advice. I don’t know why everyone I’ve talked to takes it personally - I am never disrespectful and never say “I hate it here” or anything negative about the school. I don’t know why people can’t accept the fact that this school is not for everyone and not everyone is happy here.

I do not expect staff to go out of their way to help me transfer, but I don’t expect to be given vague or no answers and told nobody can help me after giving all my money to the school for 2 years.

I talked to 2 different people in the advising center and the teacher of my freshman seminar from last year. All 3 told me they couldn’t help me make a fall schedule after I told them I was transferring next year. That, to me, is ridiculous. I am paying summer and fall tuition and fees to this school, but nobody wanted to help me because I was transferring (IN A YEAR!) and therefore not worth their time and effort. I know universities are businesses - that still doesn’t excuse staff being rude and unhelpful to students who would rather continue their education at a different school.

This post is really long but hopefully it will help other students who want to transfer realize that they should never tell faculty/staff they plan to transfer - I found out the hard way.

No one should be treated the way you’ve described in your post. You are a paying student.
You are entitled to proper advisement and help from your advisor. Honestly, if I was treated this way, I would seriously consider speaking with the department head of my major and explain the wall that your current advisor has set up. If you have the guts, you may also consider contacting the President of Stony Brook. You have nothing to lose by calling him.

I called Advisement and asked; call the Writing Department at 631-632-7390 and they’ll help you drop the class. The block is there to prevent students from dropping a course that’s a prereq for virtually everything else; we want to make sure students take it early.

But call Writing, and they’ll override it. (They’ll probably be happy to save a seat!)

Chris

What should he do about the lack of advisement? Who should he contact? I feel bad for this kid. It sounds as those he’s pretty much left to fend for himself even when he appears to be asking the right people for help/advisement.

Thank you very much for the info sbuadmissions.

And nysmile, I really don’t care that much about the advising situation. I was told they couldn’t help me because I no longer have any requirements to fulfill, so it didn’t matter what classes I take. They still should have helped me make a schedule but I don’t really blame them. I will probably mention it on the exit interview sheet.

Well, I think that’s just it. They can’t help you because they don’t know what you need. Maybe someone should have pointed you to the Writing Department sooner, but regardless, it’s hard for us to help if we don’t know what you need.

Your best bet, actually – and we do this with students who are coming to us from other schools – is to talk to someone wherever you’re going, and ask THEM to help you with classes here that will help you there.

And of course, hopefully you change your mind between now and then and stay with us. But if not, we understand.
