Has the students already been informed, or will they soon be?
I have no clue I mean I didnât specify if I was a transfer or not so idk maybe he meant in the context of transfers?? he told me a small number of students have been contacted though
Yeah
But whatâs a âsmall numberâ and why are they dragging this out? Who wants to go to school anyhow that keeps hundreds of kids on a thin leash - itâs really not fair - and who do you call to find out?
When schools use the waitlist, they can only offer so many spots so they donât over enroll.
They give a short timeframe - so they can go to the next round if they donât get a positive result.
Some drag out through July.
I suspect wait lists have very low yields althiugh likely higher at a public than private. I donât know. Just my suspicion. By now most have moved on, even firmed up roommates.
True but wouldnât all those people take themselves off the waitlist? Or maybe people keep their spot and donât bother to drop
Themselves off ?
This
I already know chances are very slim, I just wish schools were more transparent about when they sent out offers, how many they sent out, etc.
If it werenât for platforms like Reddit and college confidential, I would have no clue if a waitlist moved and an estimate of how many got a spot- and thatâs just using the lense of people who are even on these platforms.
Frankly if you are on a waitlist, youâve been rejected and emotionally you should have already moved on.
Let it be a nice surprise if it happens. But torturing yourself is not the answer.
Colleges typically WL more than they even admit - at least the privates. A WL is for their benefit, not yours. Theyâve already said no.
yeah I agree, Iâve moved on and Iâm not counting on anything for sure! just wish colleges were more transparent is all
They told u if they get a spot for you theyâll let you know. What else could they do ?
The WL is for the benefit of the school, not the student.
UNCâs orientation sessions for first year students begins tomorrow and runs through mid-late August. It seems to me that they are essentially done taking people off the WL and are now focusing on committed first year students. While it is possible that students may drop out and admissions will turn to the WL, I would not count on it.
I would focus on the school you committed to, and if UNC happens to call you it will be a nice surprise.
thatâs not what I meant by transparency. Iâm not hung over UNC but my statement for wanting more transparency was general for the process in terms of all students.
it would be more helpful for kids to know if a school has made any offers and when they have + if they donât have any upcoming waves. obviously they donât owe us that but it would be helpful to know if there was any upcoming movement
itâs harder than it looks to let go. Iâm over it now but a month ago I was still holding onto waitlist hope and the same goes for a lot of students, they will always have that thought lingering regardless of what people tell them. if a school is planning to release any decisions and they have spots open, at least telling students would let them be aware because if a student doesnât get an offer, they know the chances of getting off are even less to none. I mean unc hasnât even moved their waitlist until recently and people were wondering if it would move at all and when it would⊠just having sight of it would lessen all that curiosity. unc at least tells us their waitlist will close June 30, but some schools donât even close until end of summer even though they might stop offering spots after early may so those kids havenât even been âofficiallyâ rejected- yes a waitlist already should be taken as a no but u canât help but wonder âwhat ifâ
They donât owe you that level of transparency.
But they should make clear to WL students that theyâve been rejected. But they blur the lines there.
You should long have moved on to choice #2. Iâm sure most offered WL admits turn them down - theyâve already moved on.
Now I just wonder if the CDS information for students accepting a spot on waitlist is based on the deadline (for EA, late Feb) or the students that stayed on the WL till the very end. Basically⊠do they choose to document the highest numbers or the lowest numbers⊠(I will also be calling UNC tmrw to gather more info, though it may be redundant.)
You all are waaaaaay overthinking this - and itâs causing you consernation.
The last CDS is two years old. They admitted 10,347 with 4,677 enrolling. And yet they wait listed 8,957. So no offense, but youâre not special. They WL almost as many as they admit - and more than enroll. It did say they admitted 647 students off the WL. That doesnât mean all enrolled - but if you want to say 647 out of 8,957 - ok - still not good odds.
They offered to 8,957 - so thatâs the # they use. That is not all that went on. If someone went on period - that # is 6,564. So that many accepted a spot - even if they dropped later. And so 10% or so of those got an offer.
Again, move to the school that loves you - and that youâve hopefully fallen in love withâŠ
Yeah I said that they donât owe us it, but again, it would benefit the students and help them move on. Itâs easier to get hung up on schools when you just went through the process. You say that kids should long move on but the lack of transparency in the waitlist process is what perpetuates kids getting hung up on it. If colleges start to tell kids that theyâve made offers and that if they donât plan on releasing anymore waves soon and when they do if they decide to, it would help students better conceptualize that they need to stop holding on because the hope that they had of getting off the waitlist in the first place is slipping away more than they think.
Like I said, I personally am content with my college that Iâm going to and am not losing hours of sleep over UNC. Yes, it would be nice to get off, but my main point here is just my frustration over the lack of transparency in the entire college admissions system when it comes to waitlists. They donât owe us it but they donât owe us a lot of things, that doesnât mean that they shouldnât try to implement them in the future though.
People have the option to opt themselves off the waitlist so itâs likely a lot of people who get offers will heavily consider going to UNC. If they moved on, theyâd take themselves off. Unc sent out an email like last week to remind people to take themselves off if they were no longer interested, which is the same for many schools
Well the school wants students to stay hooked in case they need them. Why else would they offer more students a WL spot than they even admit.
So they donât want to tell them the likelihood is they donât sniff admission. That would work against their goal - which is ensuring they arenât short of revenue.
Thank you for your help, and yes, itâs stressing me out. I know the chances of me getting are slim to none, and at this point Iâve been anxiously waiting to hear a definite answer, whether itâs me choosing it or UNC. I wish I could say I love the school that Iâm committed to but itâs tough. It was my absolute last choice but the most logical option in comparison to the other schools Iâve been accepted to. I hate the position Iâm in but at the end of the day, Iâll still do my best and get a degree.
Well if I had a dollar for every story Iâve read on here about - I had to settle for my safety and I was so bummed - yet four years later, I canât imagine having gone anywhere else - Iâd be a rich guy.
Go in with an open mind, take advantage of what the school offers and youâll do great.
is this true? does anybody know anyone?
