Thanks for the update!

Too bad you didn’t see Shelby. Shelby has been completed for a couple of years…it was phase 1. Phase 2 finished this summer (I think). Phase 3 begins now.

One more thing, I have some concrete information for those looking into engineering.

Students with 27-29 act or 1210-1320 sat and 3.5 gpa will receive $1,500 per year for four years.

Students with 30-36 act or 1330-1600 sat and a 3.5 gpa will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

Navarre… UA Engineering must have raised the OOS scholarship $$ for ACT 30-31. That’s good news. It think it used to be $2000.

College of Engineering [College of Engineering - Scholarship Information](http://coeweb.eng.ua.edu/future_students/scholarship.htm)
Scholarships 2009-2010

The following scholarships are in addition to the University-level scholarships offered.

In-State:

Students who have a 27-29 ACT or 1200-1310 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $1,500 per year for four years.

Students who have a 30-36 ACT or 1320-1600 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

Out-of-State:

Students who have a 27-29 ACT or 1200-1310 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $1,500 per year for four years.

Students who have a 30-31 ACT or 1320-1390 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive a tuition supplement to bring their University-level scholarship offer up to the value of tuition. In addition, they will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

Students who have a 32-36 ACT or 1400-1600 SAT (math and verbal scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will receive $2,500 per year for four years.

Students must maintain enrollment in a College of Engineering degree program to receive any College of Engineering scholarship.

It’s old that UA engineering separately lists the OOS ACT 30-31 and the OOS ACT 32-36… I think the ACT 30-31 scholarship used to be lower.

Maybe someone who has more recently been on a UA campus tour can refresh my memory…

Most of the walking (which isn’t a whole lot) is around the Quad and then back to the student center.

I know one time the bus picked us up right outside of the Ferg, drove us around the campus’ more outer buildings (such as the where the stadiums are, the rec center, the health center, the Greeks, etc), and then dropped us off behind Gorgas Library where we began the walk around the Quad and then walked back to the Ferg.

If you look at this map <a href=“Page Not Found | The University of Alabama”>Page Not Found | The University of Alabama;

Find the Quad (the empty space in the center). Denny Chimes (the tower) is at the bottom of the Quad, and Gorgas Library is at the top of the Quad.

The walking tour begins behind Gorgas Library (this is where the bus tour ends), you walk around the Quad, then walk past the Library again and walk north and end up at Ferguson Student Center - which is 3 buildings north of the library. I think the walking tour is doable for anyone, except someone who might have some real walking issues.

Just returned from 11/11 University Days - bizarre how absolutely perfect this school seems for DS! We came armed with a ton of information so this was primarily to see the campus (having never visited), just get a general feel of the place. We skipped some sessions and by asking specific questions of one of the MANY U Days staff were directed to the right places to get our questions answered. Had a one-on-one with the Honors College the afternoon before, toured the new Shelby Engineering building, Fine Arts and the Rec. Center on our own, noone seemd to mind us wandering (we did check in at the front desks). Apart from the feel of things it seems like any really specific questions within a department can be addressed by a phone call or email rather than at a big session like this.
A huge HUGE plus, from looking at the pics and all we thought the campus would be huge, spread out and sparse, has no idea of the trees and hills, the way the buildings old and new are so well integrated with each other style-wise. Had to laugh after reading about the best way to get from here to there, how to find the parking etc., it was all so accessible. We set our GPS to go find the town of Tuscaloosa on our way out, duh, it was just two blocks down from the stadium. This whole place seems really manageable, crazily friendly - we can both totally picture DS attending.
And the gallons and gallons of sweet tea at the lunch - took a picture of that, sealed the deal!

Any specific questions about the best way to do U days from our perspective please ask. :)

Al34 - How did the one on one with the Honor’s College go? Did you set up an appt prior to arriving? What type of information did you receive? Sorry for all the questions!!

My daughter is a Junior and we are going to fly in for the University Day in early February.

We feel similar to you in that we already have a ton of information and she just wants to get a feel for the campus

Glad to hear that your visit thru University Days was so successful. :)

So glad to hear that you got to tour Shelby and Engineering. Was that part of the tour, or was that something you did on your own? We also would ask the front desks if we could wander around the rec center, because we didn’t feel that the “official tour” included all the aspects that my sons were interested in.

Did you get to tour the Honors Dorms? If so, which one(s)?

That’s one of the things I really like about Bama. The nice landscaping and trees. They’ve done a fine job making sure that all new buildings keep with the “look” of the older buildings. I toured another campus yesterday (Miss St), and while it’s nice, the newer building don’t “go” with the older ones.

I’ve never really been able to figure out which is the true town of Tuscaloosa - the area to the west of campus, or the area that is southeast of the campus (where the mall and the outdoor mall are on McFarland). Maybe the answer is “both” LOL. We have a tendency to approach (or leave) the school from McFarland, since we like a few of the restaurants at that new outdoor mall.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
And the gallons and gallons of sweet tea at the lunch - took a picture of that, sealed the deal!
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Ahhh, the sweet tea…DS2 is a big fan. But thank goodness they’re understanding of us Yankees or westerners who take our tea straight up. :)

^ we called the Honors Dept. a few weeks prior to Univ. Days and asked to come in and chat. Since we were concerned about getting out flight out in time we did it the day prior, but if that’s not an issue than you could also schedule it the same day. Basically we both sat in the Honors recruiting (I think) person’s office and she told us about the opportunities and answered DSs questions etc. Nicely informal, no pressure, but it really gave us a better feel of the whole thing, options, community service options etc.

If you come equipped with info beforehand you can easily skip the financial aid/scholarhsip presentations etc. As I said earlier (or did I?) the big sessions were very general, to get the specific answers you need to either find the right people there or email/phone.

I do think it worked out best for us having had to fly in and going sight unseen, to get to campus the day before for the Honors meeting, that way we got the lay of the land and could go off on our own for parts of University Days. By the time we left we had done absolutely everything we needed to do to make an informed decision.

yes, we visited Ridgecrest South (and East), toured with an RA instead of waiting for the U Days personnel, as far as the Rec Center we just asked to tour it ourselves and got to explore everything there on our own. There were U Days people around every corner to help if we needed it.

:)

Thanks AL34!

We are flying in the day before and plan to be on campus to get a feel for the campus. We will contact the Honors Dept prior to going.

It sounds like we are going to do exactly what you and your S did!

Thanks again!

AL34

How did that hotel work out for you?

^ awesome hotel - one exit away, can’t imagine being any closer would have made a bit of difference. Even the sausage gravy at the breakfast buffet was great - Thanks!!!

…and that hotel was?..

^ sorry, missing post, was there earlier…
Wingate by Wyndham, got it on that bidding site advertised by William Shatner, maybe syaing it violates this board’s TOS?

^^^

You’ll get the best PRICE for Wingate if you check out that LINE. ;)

BTW…at UDays…did they have the fountains on outside of Ferguson? The students walk thru them when they’re hot. LOL

Fountains were on, but it was pretty soggy/windy before things warmed up, was raining non-stop from Monday until Tues. evening. The day fortunately turned out to be beautiful!
